I was wondering if it is doable to base my minis with black spray, then with a couple of coats of blue spray to save painting them blue by hand? Has anybody tried anything similar and is it recommended, any advice will be much appreciated!

If you are, say, painting Ultramarines, spray your models with blue to save on time. You don't need to undercoat with black unless you're doing a zenithal highlight with blue. Ideally you would use a blue primer so that the paint that you add over the blue would stick better, but that's not really necessary. Citadel sprays are good, but they are quite pricey. I would recommend either Vallejo or army painter sprays, as, unlike generic hardware store sprays, they have a matching acrylic paint. Citadel Magragge Blue Spray will match Citadel Magragge Blue. It's important to mention, though, that you should go over the sprayed models with a thin coat of the paint so that, when you need to touch up the blue the colors match. Good Luck!

Anything I say, unless expressly noted, is my own opinion. Take it as you will

Citadel sprays aren't primers, but for GW (or I think even most) plastics, they'll do just fine. For metals I'd recommend either getting a separate primer or sealing rather well after painting. For the former, Kraylon is a good brand, but avoid the paint/primers and just go for their basic black, white, and Grey primers. For the latter, I've had success with more "professional " stuff; I have a can of Windsor and Newton varnish, no longer available sadly, but it is strong stuff (even if it also has a strong smell).

Have you looked into airbrushes ?
Also, yes you could just get a blue base paint/primer in spray

I agree. I've learned so much from that guy.

I can't get Montana sprays near me, I have to order online but I'm going to order a few when the next stimulus arrives.

Thanks for the replies. I am undercoating black first as I like the overall darker look to my marines, I just wondered if for ease of use/saving time I could just spray with blue over the black base.

If your goal is a darker blue, you could consider spraying the blue directly over the plastic then using a shade, wash or contrast to darken it down.

The reason I say that vs spraying black first is because coloured sprays are often have quite good coverage, so trying to make it look darker by using a darker undercoat may be difficult.

Indeed.
The blue is strong enough that generally it’ll look the same whether a black spray is underneath or not.
(Whereas if you Painted on by brush, or even airbrush maybe not sure, it generally shows a deeper blue because of the black spray)

Nowadays, as an advanced tabletop painter, I'll paint whatever color as a base paint with a colored airbrush primer, then wash with an Army Painter Quickshade Ink. None of the fuss of spray priming and I have a start on the base coat. Also, per ounce, airbrush paint is less expensive than hobby paint (especially anything by GW). For advanced tabletop, despite how few colors of colored primer I have compared to hobby paints (twelve to a few hundred), I found I don't actually need all those hobby paints (though the washes are a must), and can do fine using colored primer as paint. I don't miss zenithal priming, thanks to the wash.

You can see how I used colored primer and washes on a variety of miniatures here, including changing my mind after priming...! : https://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/18/18478.phtml
