Yup, that was more akin to the old Template style of weapons functions. Now, if it says "unit" you only role the required number of dice/times for each unit (squad, etc.) If it says "model" then you roll for each specific model that falls at least partially (or wholly within if specified by the rule) the range. However, in both cases, unless the rule specifies otherwise, wounds failed are still allocated by the owner of the unit following normal rules.
So for instance, your opponents' Void Raven drops its Void Mine and any of the models from your 5-man squad is in the 6" range of the drop point. They would then roll one
D6 for that entire squad (unit). If they roll a 4+, they then roll another
D6 for MWs inflicted. After that, you as the player in control of the squad allocate the MWs as you desire, within the normal rules for allocating wounds in a multi-model unit.
