Hi quick question if anybody can point me in the direction of the rule covering it if there is one.
If a unit is affected by a leadership modifier such as grisly trophies or a banner and they then use the leadership of another character such as a chaplain or commissar do you add/subtract the modifier to the borrowed leadership?
I'm in two minds tbh, interested to hear your thoughts
Those modifiers only affect the leadership characteristic of the unit itself. Inquisitors and commissars allow you to use the character's leadership characteristic, and that is not affected by wathever is affecting the unit using their aura, so nearby units would use the commissar/inquisitor unmodified leadership characteristic.
This is a case of needing to check the specific rules closely. If a rule changes the Leadership characteristic of a unit, it won't impact the characteristic that is being used instead of the unit's Leadership.
For example, the Primaris Ancient's Astartes Banner is:
Astartes Banner (Aura): While a friendly <CHAPTER> CORE unit is within 6" of this model, add 1 to the Leadership characteristic of models in that unit....
While the Primaris Chaplains Spiritual Leaders is:
Spiritual Leaders (Aura): While a friendly <CHAPTER> CORE unit is within 6" of this model, models in that unit can use this model’s Leadership characteristic instead of their own.
So if you are within 6" of both units, you either use your Leadership + 1 or the Chaplain's Leadership. However, if the Chaplain is also within 6" of the Ancient, the Chaplain's Leadership has the +1 included if you elect to use it.
Grisly Trophies is:
Grisly Trophies (Aura): While an enemy unit is within 3" of this model, subtract 2 from the Leadership characteristic of models in that unit.
This means if you are in the area of both the Grisly Trophies and a Chaplain you use either your Leadership -2 or the Chaplains Leadership. Just note that if the Chaplain is within the area of the Grisly Trophies, his Leadership is -2 when he loans it out.
Does that make sense?

A crucial side-effect of this change is that Characters themselves won’t be affected by aura abilities that utilise the Core keyword – they’re supposed to be commanding others, not inspiring themselves to do better!

I dont think chaplains are CORE, are they?
Oversight on my part, but serves the purpose for example on how the rules would work if they were eligible for the bonus.
