Tyranid Biotita does not fit in the deployment zone. What rules, and where can I find them, that tells me how to deploy it?

From the core rules FAQ:

DEPLOYING LARGE MODELS
Some large models, typically Aircraft, have wings and other
parts that extend significantly beyond their base, this can make it difficult for them to fit wholly within a mission’s deployment zone, and whilst the deployment sequences of mission packs clearly state that no part of the model can overhang the edge of the battlefield, the edge of your deployment zone is not mentioned. For clarity, such models can overhang a deployment zone if it is not possible to set them up otherwise (i.e. if it is not possible to set them up without them overhanging their deployment zone), but when setting them up on the battlefield their base must still be wholly within their deployment zone.

So... for a model without a base, does this mean if you can't fit it within the deployment zone, they can overhang as much as they want..? Possibly entirely? There's nothing saying you have to minimise overhang, just that the base must still be in the deployment zone.

Certainly not intentional, but it sounds like they forgot that sometimes models don't have bases...

Overhang also implies parts that don't touch the ground, which is still problematic for the bio Titan.

The tyranid hierophant is humungus has this line of text:

'Designers Note: If this model does not have a base, before deploying this model, both players must agree the footprint of this model’s ‘base’ in the same way they would for an Area Terrain feature. We suggest that an imaginary straight line should be drawn from each point on this model which would touch the battlefield when it is placed on a flat surface. The area within these lines should be considered to be this model’s ‘base’.

If the model has been posed with one or more of its legs raised, agree with your opponent the point where that leg would touch the battlefield, and use this to advise the shape of the model’s ‘base’.'

But I am pretty sure it does not fit within the deployment zone. So what they are sugesting is that I deploy it partially on the table and partially (say to back legs) partially off the table as best I can?

When the titan has no base, you must agree on a "virtual" base with your opponent. This "virtual" base must be in your deployment zone as much as possible. It can overhang your deployment zone, but it cannot overhang the edge of the battlefield.

I understand we need to agree on a virtual base. Let is say we agree on that and use the rules that are sugested in the datasheet. The model is now to big to fit in my deployment zone.

How do I deploy it? I do not understand what they mean by overhang here. I asume this is when a part of the model is pointing over the deployment zone, like say a wing on an airplane? But in the biotitans case we are talking about the base. How do I deploy them then? If I can not place them over the edge of the battlefield the only option left is to have it point out of my depoyment zone?

I have a pucture from scale from tabletopp titan. The 'suggested base' is so big I would asume it will not always be placed in one deployment zone. (It is more then 10"). Tabletopp Titans refer a rule by GW where it starts on the table but is not allowed to walk on the first turn. I have never heard of this rule before.

The only rule that I can think of similar to that is for setting up large models from strategic reserves:

If a model is so large that it cannot physically be set up wholly within 6" of a battlefield edge (i.e. the smallest dimension of that model is greater than 6"), it must be set up so that it is touching your battlefield edge. During the turn in which such a model is set up on the battlefield, that model’s unit cannot do any of the following: make a Normal Move, Advance, Fall Back, Remain Stationary; attempt to manifest or deny psychic powers; make any attacks with ranged weapons; declare a charge; perform a Heroic Intervention; perform any actions or psychic actions.

While this doesn’t directly apply, it might be a good way to resolve this situation as it doesn’t seem to be covered specifically in the rules.

Yes, that is what I am looking for? I did word searches in the faq's but could not find it. Where do you find that?

Also, that only regards reserves, does it not?

Core Book, Strategic Reserves, “Setting Up Strategic Reserves”, last paragraph of page 256.

And yes, this is specifically for units arriving from Strategic Reserves.

Oh. So I just deploy it on the table turn one and try to make it fit as best I can then. Reserving it and have it only make a move turn 3 is just bad.

If you’re using a bio Titan you’re already in the realms of having to discuss and house rule with your opponent anyway. Agree what works best/seems most fun for the pair of you. The internet won’t be able to decide for you.

What you are saying is that there are no rules for this in the current rulesett.

Pretty much, not that comprehensively cover this scenario. This is common for Forgeworld rules, doubly so for Titans.

There are, but you won't like it.

Your models have to be wholly deployed within your deployment zone. If there's a model you can't deploy in this way, then you'd be forced to put it into Strategic Reserves in order to use it. To do otherwise would be breaking the rules.

So, yes. Turn 3 Bio-Titan.

What I’m saying is the most important thing is you and your opponent having fun with your models, and coming up with a way to deploy you both find cool. I’d certainly not say “well the Matched Play deployment rules mean you cannot ever deploy this hahaha I win” type stuff. I’d say “you’re right, can’t deploy it… meh, just hang it out of DZ. Maybe it’s bang on the middle and the army surging alongside it? Should we move some of the terrain so you can move it around the board a bit too?”

Far more fun if you collaborate and find a way to use the cool toys.

I definitely wouldn’t do this. It’s dogmatic and unfriendly because you’re saying “you can’t use your coolest model for half the game”.

It really depends on how you've posed it. It's so close to being 10" wide that a minor change in how you've attached the legs can allow it to fit in a 10" deployment zone.

I glued mine together in a relatively upright position when I built it years ago, and it just so happens that it's slightly less than 10" wide. Some people splay the legs out in a more squat pose, which makes it wider.
It's what emerges from the model having posable legs and no fixed base size.
