Hey, very new to all this so hopefully you guys can help me out here.
I haven’t played any miniature games since heroquest, mordheim, necromunda and space hulk which I used to play with my dad and a couple of friends when we were kids. (15/25 years ago)

I was recently gifted some left over kits from my friend moving house and I wondered what the best thing to do with them was.
I’ve always been a massive fan of the building and painting side of the hobby and can’t wait to get back into it!

My friend and I were thinking combat patrol would be a good place to start, he has blood angels and thousand suns armies he will drop down to combat patrol lists so I’m thinking I’ll put together two or three different “armies” so they can be played if I get the chance but I’m mostly in this for the painting side.
Just had a few questions for each of my options(before I start spending).

I am for sure doing space wolves as one, I love the lore behind them and all Norse mythology so it’s a natural choice. I have loads of old space wolves stuff but have no idea if I can still use any of it?
Can I use wulfen in combat patrol? I remember loving the old metal models from the 13th company(eye of the warp or eye of chaos??)
Are bikes any good outside of white scars?
Is a dreadnaught a waste of points in Combat Patrol?

I’ve always wanted to build a salamanders list but have absolutely no idea what I’m doing with these, I definitely want to pick up the Primaris Inceptors or some kind of jet pack flamethrower type options.
I really struggled to find any lists as examples for salamanders so I’m very blind here but just love the design of this chapter and looking for some pointers

I haven’t ever really looked into tyranids before due to the swarm armies being a lot of work for childhood me but my friends box of left overs came with three warriors and a box of gargoyles and some rippers.
I would love to use these as my test painting list just to get back into the swing of things, are gargoyles useless in combat patrol? I absolutely love the design for them and would love to use them but don’t want to focus too much on something unplayable.

I’m sorry this is horribly formatted, I’m very new to this and have only started looking again over the last couple of days.
Thanks in advance for your help

If you could post a list of all the units you have that would be a big help.

If you're looking to build 2-3 small armies and your friend's armies are both variations of Space Marines, it would be my suggestion that you go with SW if you love them for one and then do something very different from dudes in power armor for the others.

Spice it up!

@gert
I have no idea what my space Wolf units are other than 1 squad of 5 wulfen from many years ago, along with three bikes and a dreadnaught. Everything is in storage at my parents so I won’t know for a while yet.
But most of it is unbuilt or half painted so it might be salvageable.

The Nids are just
3 warriors unbuilt
1 unopened box of gargoyles(fly my pretties)
And two bases of the ripper swarms(he said I might need to buy more to field them but I don’t have any books yet)

Salanders would be totally fresh and just because I think they look cool so any suggestions here are welcome
Thanks for the reply

@Sobie
I totally agree, I have just been going through some sites and love the look of necrons, eldar and tau but really inquisition look really cool too. Never felt so spoilt for choice!
Are there any armies that don’t work in combat patrol?
Thanks for the reply
