did not tested it myself but the local group went thru all sorts of Ancient themed Skirmishers including SPQR but finally settled with Age of Hannibal (some months ago) because they liked it more than SPQR

Harry, bring this ring to Narnia or the Sith will take the Enterprise

I have not played, but the LAF (Lead Adventure Forums] community is not a fan.

Some other similar options are:

Age of Hannibal
Clash of Spears
Wars of the Republic
Warhammer Ancients

I play it.

It's not a mainstay, but as a warband game, it's pretty good.

I recommend it, but not for one to jump all in with. Prices are great, game plays smooth, and you are playing ancients, so its pretty much swords, shields, slings, etc, depending on when, and who you use.

Black Powder, and Bolt Action are in the same vein. I like historical games, they just don't have a big following.

Miniatures are great, standard warlord historicals, and there are a lot of scenery options, but I was just good with the basics. A couple of woods, a hill and some rocks/ ruins.

Hail Caesar is the mass battle game that you'll end up graduating to, if you end up going all in.

i have played SPQR now and it is pretty good.
however the scenario's aren't very good.
most just fall in the 'kill your enemy' category, i could burn down the houses or i just kill you.
also i feel its not really balanced
right now we are doing a campaign mode and so far the roman player hasn't lost a single battle. he has 1 unit of legionary upgraded out the butt, with 2 heroes in it.
i even started to cheese it by having 2 unit of gaul warriors that are skyclad, a horn and a druid. I blow my horn make sure only 1 model touches his unit.
this causes me to have 11 attacks (because of wild charge) and he has 1 attack back. then i pull back and charge again. on my retreat i still only receive 1 attack back. then with the charge i once again get 10 extra attacks. and i do this with my other unit as wel and by the end of it, i still only killed 4 of his 24 models. while he killed 5 of my models spread around my 2 units. then his turn he charges, makes sure that his heroes are in contact and just wipes half my unit.

i get that i die fast because i have no armor that is part of the plan. however even then i get +10 attack and +3 total to melee and with that get rerolls each time i charge and still i just cant kill him. at the end of the battle i am wiped and he lost at most 9 models.

Yeah, this, on a variation.

I was trying to be diplomatic, but like I said, it isn't one of my mainstays.

I've got several teams/ warbands. Tell the truth though, you get bored painting the same guys over and over...
