Hi,

Has anyone used Warhammer Ancient Battles with any requisite amendments for fighting Lord of the Rings massed battles?

If so, what changes did you make?

I would try to put something together myself but I'm rubbish at tinkering with rules

You may be aware (and prefer to use WH Ancient Battles) but GW did a mass battles ruleset for their Middle-Earth Miniatures, called War of the Ring (not to be confused with the board game).

Of course, I'm really not a fan of the game, which is why I was asking.

Also, it takes me back to the days of White Dwarf (before Games Workshop got their grubby mitts on it) and some scenarios for WHFB V.1 and 2.

I thought WH Ancient Battles would be a better fit then any of the recent additions of WHFB as the magic systems are overpowered and not suitable.

Why? You could just, you know, limit the magic power. Or not take more than 1 wizard.

Anyway, I'd use AoS ruleset, not WAB, because LotR is really not an universe using regimented square blocks of infantry in their wars. Looser, more skirmish formations of AoS fit the feel of Middle Earth battles much more, IMO. Also, AoS has different grades of 'humans' much like LotR, you could use say Stormcast statlines for Gondorian knights and other DĂșnedain, while using Cities of Sigmar for factions like Dale. You can't really do that under WHB factions.
