Calloo callay, oh frabjous day! One of my friends is interested in a TABLETOP WARGAME!

It's Star Wars: Legion, a game I know nothing about. I'm looking over the rules now, but anyone who's experienced in this, please educate me.

The rules for individual units come with their minis as a unit card.

There aren't any army books, just the unit cards.

If you want to be able to "look before you buy" a unit, I highly suggest looking at the free army builder from The Fifth Trooper called "Legion HQ".

It's a solid little game. To me it feels very much like someone wanting to write a more modern version of 40k and I think it succeeds for the most part. Here's the basics.

At the start of the turn you play a commander card from your hand. These are unique to the commanders you're playing, (Luke, Vader, Maul, etc) and both determine who goes first in the round and also let you put out order tokens to certain units. Lower priority cards tend to let you issue orders to more units.

During the round, you alternate activating units with your opponent, drawing randomly from a stack and activating a unit that matches the type drawn. Instead of drawing a random unit you can instead take an activation with one of the units you issued an order to at the start of the round.

Combat is based on dice pools. A whole unit will fire at another whole unit, using a mix of specialty D8s that mostly just decide the X+ value on them, with successes forcing an armor save on enemy units with D6 math similar to 4k.

One of the big mechanics I find interesting in the game is suppression. Basically, whenever you attack a unit it gains a suppression token. A unit generally can only take one action while they have a suppression token, but also gains a cover bonus. This makes for one of the few systems I've seen where focus firing on a unit can be less beneficial than spreading attacks around and is probably my favorite aspect of the system.

The game itself is won by objectives which have a good deal of variety to them particularly with the expansions. There's a little mini game at the beginning where you take turns banning battlefield conditions (deployment, objectives, environment) that does a good job of keeping things pretty varied.

I will say, the big weakness I find in the game is that its a little too easy to game the activation system, and it really suffers from activation control issues. It's pretty easy to design lists in a way that gives near perfect activation control and without the random element, its pretty easy to get into "red rover" scenarios with key pieces. It's far less of an issue these days than it was back when there were some truly cheap activations in the system, but its still what I consider the game's biggest flaw, but mostly because so many other alternating activation systems have made great strides to work around it.

I don't think its exactly meta, but I haven't been following it that closely lately. The Fluttercraft I think only work for the Republic though, but Rebels would let you take the tour bus to get them up the field.

You can do Han and Chewie plus the Wookiee infantry units just fine and have a blast with it.

Republic has a few extra Wookiee options though, like Commanders (Wookiee Chieftain, and Chewbacca becomes a Commander in Republic), they also have Wookiee Support units with the Fluttercraft.

As long as you don't mind not having access to the Wookiee Chieftain or Fluttercraft, running a Rebels force with Han and Chewie is more than playable.

Of course, you can eventually play both. The main differences are:

Republic Wookie List:
- Has access to Fluttercraft
- Chewbacca/Chieftain Wookie Commanders
- Requires clones to fill out the Corps slots

Rebel Wookie List:
- Has access to Han as commander
- Chewbacca Operative. Requires another commander.
- Requires Rebel Troopers to fill out the Corps slots.
