As far as I can tell, a bayonet is free and gives you +1 strength. Is there any reason to build these guys without a bayonet?

Bayonets are actually a point each, with Chain Bayonets being 2 points and giving shred.
Besides saving points, I don't see why you wouldn't do either.

Oh. For some reason I looked in, I dunno, the instructions? Basic rules? One of the two Libers? And read "free" next to bayonet.

Both versions of the bayonet are really only worth it if you have an existing bonus/buff of some sort in close combat.

Im completely new to 30k, and pretty much to 40k as well.
Can you explain what you mean in a way an idiot like myself can understand. Im looking for a reason to leave them off since i like the look without them, but +1S seems too good to pass for 1p each? I would expect my tacs to face off against other tacs often in the assault phase but maybe im wrong?

Just don't put them on? Use the points for other stuff.

If your legion doesn't have other combat benefits (like world eaters +1 attack, or emperors children initiative) then you aren't really leveraging the value out of bayonets'. While it does seem like a "steal" (only 1 point for +1s, or 2 point for +1s and shred!) that adds up quickly. TAC's come in squads of up to 20, that would easily be 19-20 points for bayonets' or 38-40 for chain bayonets'. If your legion has a shooting focus then those points could be used to upgrade a gun on a vehicle or terminator squad for example which would benefit your legions traits better.
Remember, Bayonets' are 2h weapons so no +1 for dual wield, and if your being charged, then you really only have 1 attack. that extra strength or shred may not be as worthwhile as it looks on paper.
That said, chain bayonets' look great and I've put them on all my Iron Warrior Tac's

I am assuming with the potential of NL +1 to wound, that bayonets of either type (though I lean towards chain with shred) seems very beneficial no?

I don't plan to build for benefit, anyways. As long as I like what's on the table, I'm ok. And yes, chain bayonets look cool to me for IWs

The better your chances of wounding are base, the less impact Shred has.
2+......7/6 Improvement
3+......4/3 Improvement
4+......3/2 Improvement
5+......5/3 Improvement
6+......11/6 Improvement
So if you have +1 to-wound from whatever source, Shred isn't as useful. It's still HELPFUL, but not as helpful as it could be.

That certainly makes sense. So maybe regular bayonets and getting shred from characters with claws or chainblades then.
