Been over a decade since I last played (InfantryMachine put me off the game), really loved the Resource/Risk management that Warcasters/Warlocks had to offer a miniatures game with their Focus/Fury.

With the announcement of MKIV recently, I've started to revive my love of the system. However I think I'll be sticking to Battlegroup levels of engagements. So far I have managed to track down a few MKIII, and 1 MKII. I stopped playing early on in MKII, so I have little knowledge of how compatabile the MKI, MKII, and MKIII battlegroups are?

Would the contents of the different Battlegrouls be too out of balance for casual pick up and play and demo games?

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

We don't really know enough to say for sure. From what we've seen in the beta rules they're definitely lacking some of the bells and whistles of the new style customizable stuff, but they seem perfectly playable. It's going to be a long long time before PP gets to a point where they're not leaning on legacy content, so anything you pick up now for cheap should be worth it. It's just not worth like.... going crazy and buying full FA of things.

Also be considerate a lot of the older stuff is being 'legacied' so while it's fine in thir 'legacy' format (can't think of the name!) It won't be getting much if any recognition or support in the new organised play - that'll be the new stuff and sone select bits from the old era.

New warjacks will be customisable and new casters, in all likelihood will take centre stage.

If you're playing casually and are happy to swap out guns and axes to approximate the new options you'll be fine, I think. Maybe. We'll see!

Unlimited is the name of their legacy format. While I don't think it'll be the competitive format by any means, the community absolutely needs to accept legacy armies for casual play. At least locally people seem to be in agreement on that.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I meant playing them against one another as they are out of the box. So a MKII against a MKIII, any difference in core rules will be MKIII. My main worry is if the MKII battlegroups are more powerful than the MKIII. The MKII seem to be the same as the MKI, just in plastic. Where as the MKIII are totally different. I stopped playing just as MKII launched, so have no idea what the MKIII ones are like, other than looking to be a better selection, as there is little to no duplication.

Not sure I'll be going anywhere near MKIV. I plan to get as many of the Battlegroups as I can and just play using those.
