Frosting that disappears when wetted is a surface issue and can potentially be fixed. A brief explanation: The varnish surface is covered in thousands of microscopic pits that reflect light in all directions rather than one. This is why it looks frosty. When you wet the surface all of these pits get filled in with water creating a smooth surface allowing light to reflect off of it in just one direction. How to correct: You need to make the surface smooth, but permanently. Apply a gloss varnish to create the smooth surface. You can then reapply the matte varnish. How to avoid in the future: 1. Make sure climate conditions are appropriate (e.g. medium humidity, medium temperature). Check the can instructions for details. Shake the hell out of it for a long time (I recommend at least 4+ minutes of shaking. a. Medium humidity - if humidity is too low, the varnish will dry mid-air and land on the model as tiny, hardened grains; b. High humidity can cause varnish adhesion issues which leads to a cloudy look. 2. Medium temperature - temperature extremes can have negative effects on varnish behavior). Do NOT start or end a spray on the model (e.g. start spraying to one side, pass over the model, end spraying away from the model).
