Hey guys,

I'm new to this.

A colleague and I decided to built 500pt armies for quick games in the office after work. Neither of us have played 40K before.

Anyway, I went with space marines and really liked the look of the Contemptor Dreadnought, so I bought it. I also bought a Tactical Squad box to go with it.

Now I realise that I can't actually combine these, right?

The rules say that for 500pts, I have 3 command points and I can field 1 detachment. Therefor my choices are between "Patrol Detachment" and "Vangaurd Detachment". Neither allow me to combine the dreadnought (elite) with the tactical squad (troops).

Have I understood this right?

For a patrol detachment, you must include one HQ (e.g. a captain, lieutenant or librarian) and one troop unit (your already bought tactical squad).
After that you may include a limited amount of elite, fast attack and heavy support units (I'm not certain on the amount, but you have at least one slot of each).
So all you are missing is a HQ unit and you can use your Dreadnought as one of the optional elite units.

EDIT: 10 tactical Marines currently cost 180 points, and a Contemptor costs around 140 to 210 points depending on equipment. So you have enough points left over for a decent HQ character and maybe even a second. Feel free to PM me for some more detailed advice, I'm not a pro but small scale games are what I'm interested the most in so I have some experience.

Ah right. Yes, true. I misread it, like I said, I'm new. I thought that I coud only select from the troop types that were highlighted red on p248. Now I can see that those are just the essential ones.

Awesome. I'll have a play around and post what I come up with and see what you think.
