Subject: [KS] ModuBases: Universal Basing System - Use any mini in any game - 6 hours left!
Just a quick post to introduce my upcoming project, a 3d printable basing solution which aims to solve the "I need to rebase my army again" problem, and to allow you to use any miniature in any game you want.
I started making this as a personal project since I'd just bought a BoC army and ideally wanted to use it in WHFB 6th, 8th, AoS, Kings of War and TOW when it launches. 5 different games, and 5 different base sizes/shapes needed. That was going to mean a lot of adaptors or other clunky solutions, so I got to work making something much better.
For example, if you have a beastman, and need it to be on 20mm square, 25mm square, 25mm round and potentially 30mm square for all the various editions of WHFB, AoS and TOW, you can easily do that simply by hot-swapping the base between games using a snap-fit system to change the base size and shape to anything you want it to be, thousands of STL files are provided to cover as many base sizes and shapes as possible.
Multibases for games like Kings of War are also going to be included, along with rectangular and oval bases and lots of other extras planned.
I have extensively test-printed it and will be using it for all of my own miniatures in future, the bases all print great on any printer, FDM or resin since the files are provided in 5 different tolerances to work with fdm and resin printers.
Credit: Goblin miniature is from Mantic Games and used for demonstration purposes only.

Thanks! I still remember prying the bases off of some ungors after the 25mm > 20mm change from 6th to 7th edition WHFB, it didn't go well so I don't plan on doing it again!
If it goes well and stretch goals are met I'll also be sculpting diorama/ display bases for minis to seamlessly integrate into so they can look really great in a display case when not in use, with sloped designs to make the most of the vertical space.

Yeah I'm in, looks like it'll be useful and I've been collecting commercial STLs for when I can be arsed to set up an Etsy shop.
Hex bases are going to be especially useful for Battletech, and I like that you've included magnet holes (I'm assuming 5x1s?)
Diorama bases will be cool but once we have the base STLs and dimensions those should be easy enough to make even if you don't specifically design them

Thanks for the support! Magnets will be 4x1, but also 8x1 and 12x1 provided as variant options to give extra grip for larger or metal miniatures.
A lifetime commercial license will be included with the base pledge so it'll be very affordable and most etsy stores don't ship their printed minis with bases so it'll give you something to add to your offering to stand out. I'll be allowing customization as part of the commercial license too, possibly with a DIY kit included so people can easily add "cut outs" for the base cores to other scenery or diorama pieces which they have.

Thank you! It has taken a long time to develop despite the apparent simplicity of the concept, lots of different variants and careful engineering to get the fit tight but not too tight. The base cores are provided in 5 different tolerances, I might increase that to 10 just to really make sure that it works with every printer out there.

It's very doable in resin, a little trickier in FDM since you have to do 100% infill + ironing and high layer height to avoid frosting and even then, the clear PLA can be a bit yellowish rather than clear.
I do quite like the idea of completely invisible basing, works great for small-scale games, I already have people asking about warmaster/ 10mm kings of war/ WHFB and the files would work great with clear basing at that scale.
Thanks for the support from everyone here so far, it's going quite well!
Quick post to let everyone know that the campaign is at its midpoint and plenty of stretch goals have been funded, including extra magnet options, rectangular/oval bases, multibases for Kings of War, movement trays and adapter trays so you can use your existing collection in games like The Old World without having to change anything.
Here are some of the unlocked goals, with plenty more to come!

Same! What a great idea, squig
And really smart to do this as a digital offering, makes fulfillment easy. Awesome that you are giving a commercial license with each pledge, too! I wish this has been around back when I was having armies painted.
Congrats on the project and hope it keeps doing well!!

Thanks RiTides, glad you like it! The free commercial license is my way of trying to make it easier for these bases to get printed, sold and used by as many people as possible.
It's one of those things where you have to make a choice between having your creations be widely available and used vs. going for extra cash by selling commercial licenses.
Another factor is environmentalism, 3d printing is bringing more plastic/ resin into the world and if license restrictions stop people from reselling it once they no longer want it, that's more plastic in the trash, so providing a commercial license as standard tries to avoid that happening by giving people options.
Gallahad wrote:Hey, an idea for something you could add:
I would really like to see ASOIAF style movement trays but with holes for miniatures on round 25mm bases (and I guess other types of Warhammer bases).
You could also do cavalry trays with slots for GW ovals, etc.
The DIY kit I'm including will open up options for that, since it will include cutters for both the ModuBase cores and for all the common bases sizes + shapes included in the kickstarter, so it'll be possible to kitbash your own by loading a few files in the slicer and applying some simple subtract modifiers.
The KS is currently at it's midpoint, fairly slow and steady, although the number of project followers is huge, double my previous KS so I'm hopeful that there will be a good rush at the end.

2 days left to back this one, since my last post 4 more stretch goals have been unlocked, with another 5 left, the DIY kit has also been previewed with full instructions on how it works here.
Thanks to everyone who has backed so far, lets see how far it goes!
