so, im looking of getting into the Horus Heresy game.

I'm planning on getting the Age of Darkness box set. but what else do you need? do you need the relevant Liber Astartes/Hereticus book (not really sure which legion i will go for yet), or can you "get buy" with the core rulebook? Is their anything else that i would need to play (on top of the normal play aids for 40K)?

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

You 100% need the correct Liber for your army.

The book is 100% required.

So far as what else you need it really depends. HH tends to be played at higher points values than 40k, with primarchs and other “showy” but units being highly popular. You’ll want to decide on what legion you want to play before you get anything else, as that will affect it. For example you probably don’t want a bunch of dreads and artillery teams if you’re going to play white scars, nor do you want to stock up on jump infantry as death guard.

Beyond that, the biggest hurdle is going to be what, if any, melee you’re going to run. This matters because a year on GW still hasn’t released any melee support for the new line, and the resin stuff is incredibly over priced with most of it being too small. So the decision of ‘am I playing a melee oriented legion / making melee squads’ is important because the only viable way to currently do it is via the third party market.

The Liber books are a must. They contain the army rules.

From there, pick a theme and a Legion at the same time. A lot of Legions are pretty generic in terms of rules and are forgiving for most army themes.

Suggestion, before you get age of darkness, consider the legion you want to play first.
Depending upon that and the theme you want to have, you will either get a great deal out of the box, or nothing that fits.
Alternative take, maybee you don't want to play an legion at all, at that stage you either require the other rulebooks or you got your rules for free because you have realised that militia is fun.

This, fundamentally all legions can do everything at a baseline level.

Wanna go commit warcrimes with radioactive and toxic weaponry, elite got you covered, so you don't need to play DG. Like jetbikes? sure white scars have the most and some of the best, but you still can do that with other legions etc.

A Mostly Renegades and Heretics blog.
GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Also grab the free downloads for Militia and Bound Daemons if you think either interests you as allies (or even a full force in the case of militia)

1. Grab the box set. It´s the best value of all box sets GW currently sells.

2. Contemplate which Legion to pick and what colour scheme you like to apply. Note: Variations of colour schemes do exist and are encouraged by the devs. For Legion choice I would suggest watching a couple of battle reports on youtube before you make the final decision.

3. Primarchs are not needed and the game can also be played at lower point values (e.g.: 750-1000 pts.).

I would say you're safe to grab the boxed set because any Legion that can't be played with the boxed set contents can't be played at all (without a printer)

So, follow up question: the various support weapon upgrade sets being made for the mk6 beakies: Are they compatible with the mark 3 and mark 4 legionaire armour as well?

Kinda. I mean, the Mark 6 special and heavy weapon sprues are absolutely meant for the Mark 6 marines (and particular bodies at that). However, they're still space marines. So, a lot of converting is still possible.

I want most of my squads to be composed of various marks of armor. So show by the siege of Terra, even the Sons of Horus were running low on supplies and marines and couldn't afford to not bunch up who ever was left. And I made it work, and I'm not at all good at kitbashing. Though, I wasn't about to get too much in the weeds and just used the Mark 6 arms that came with the lascannons on my Mark 3 and 4. Of course, I think I did the same thing for the Mark 4 heavy bolter and missile launchers when I added them to the Mark 6 bodies.

At the end of the day, a lot of jank can be hidden under a space marine pauldron.

1. get the rule book, or get access to it
2. ditto the legion books, ideally both of them (ideally borrow to read through first, then pick one)
3. get a small force, the Age of Darkness box is a good place to start
4. find an opponent willing to play "starter box games" so nothing you do not have access to, and start small, literally character and two squads, no upgrades, to get used to movement, firing and how its not quite the same as 40k
5. add a few more bits, upgrades and repeat

as for weapons etc, if you have, or know someone with, a 3d printer there are whole ranged of models out there

Straight out of the box? No. With minimal choppage and hiding? Absolutely.
I did that with my Iron Hands, I'll see if I still have a pic somewhere I can share.

So they aren't Iron Hands and the image isn't brilliant, however, these Salamanders use the plastic Rotor Cannons and a mix of random Primaris arms, Mk3 and Mk4. They took minimal effort to fit either option with a tiny amount of filler in the wrist gaps.
Spoiler:

Anyone who says the weapons can't be used is a poor hobbyist. When I started Heresy, we didn't have any fancy schmancy plastic kits. We had sticks. Two sticks and a rock for a whole club. And we had to share the rock.
