Hi there,

I was just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the game Majestic 13 by Snarling Badger studios. It seems to be in the same vein as the game the Doomed about hunting aliens / monsters with a small team. I was just looking for thoughts on the game itself, it seems to be quite solo focused and has a fair bit of campaign system from what I've been able to gather.

Would love to hear others opinions of it.

Sgt : " Whats your name soldier? "

Pvt : " Gene steeler, sir "

Clears throat nervously.

Pvt : " No relation "

Sounds a bit like Men In Black or maybe Torchwood. Not played anything by Snarling Badger, but Ash on GMG has covered the game with both review and playthrough.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

Oh, the theme is incredibly cool and my wife loves X-file-like stories, but a game boasting about content size is always a red flag for me.

Too often the fact that the game sports 50 upgrades, 30 pages of equipment, 1000 scenarios, 1000000 skills etc is there to obfuscate the fact that the base game loop is flat and boring as hell.

So what about the interesting decision points in an average game of M13? Is it packed with hard choices and multiple viable options every time players make their moves? Is it intellectually engaging at its most basic even without pages upon pages of lore and upgrades?

Or is it just "push your guys so that their weapons are in range and roll some dice to see if they do anything"?

It's been a year now so surely somebody has some experience already. Fingers crossed for a good game to play with my wife

I've read Majestic 13 after playing The Doomed and didn't think it added enough to be worth "upgrading" to a much more crunchy system. And the rules for aliens, I think, are less interesting than The Doomed, which also has the whole Nexus mechanic.

Book is lovely tho, worth having just to read, and has some great fun rules like every game you roll for a "bureaucratic complication" because paper pushers don't understand how things go down in the field.

If you're into solo monster hunting also check out Perilous Tales by "the Gaslands guy" Mike Hutchinson, the WIP is free to download. It's 1920 pulp investigators themed but Ash played it as X-files and it worked fine. Has a really strong scenario generator and there's a high score chart to fill in with your replays.
