This thread will now include 40k and Kill Team miniatures including Cthulu-themed GSC and a Slaugth project

This will be where I post my ongoing journey of scratchbuilding my Sylvanneth army. For some context, I wanted to do something inspired by FromSoft's Dark Souls series/Elden Ring and decided the tree people were a faction that could represent that aesthetic well, with a blighted, autumnal feel.

The majority of the army will be scratchbuilt, occasionally using some 3d prints as base models.

Prior to this project I have had no real sculpting experience and only a small amount of converting.

Expect creepy, weird models that will probably be fairly different to traditional GW-style sculpts.

As of 05/09/23 Alarielle is...partially done, probably the majority of the sculpting work is finished and its a tidying up task now.

Durthu has had some work done on him

TLA, Kurnoth Swords/Bows, Treelord, Arch Revenant and Warsong Revenant have all been planned out conceptually.

With Alarielle I wanted something creepy that evoked Malennia vibes but didn't copy her exactly. My favourite character from Warhammer Fantasy was always Ariel and so I decided to make the model a blend of FromSoft-style and Wood Elf Ariel, hence the more mage-like robes and staff. The wings were also heavily inspired by the attached piece of Ariel artwork. I wanted it to appear as though she is blooming into a monstrous butterfly creature and so I am magnitising the wings and some other features so she can have a more humanoid form and a more monstrous, insect-like form.

I wanted to evoke slow and unsettling movement in the model, as though its drifting into a clearing menacingly like the start of a boss fight.

Some WIP of the process.
I began by making a wire frame using garden wire from the hardware shop then built up the underlying shape using compressed tinfoil.

Initially, I didn't really know exactly what I wanted so I tried several different themes and it all sort of just came together organically through trial and error.

After that I layered on tiers of milliput and Greenstuff to build up a more solid base figure. To create the robes I used layers of tinfoil, greenstuffed over it and then peeled away the tinfoil. I also pressed the rolled out Greenstuff on some of the robes with leaves from the garden to get leaf indentations onto the robes.

The wings were first made out of cardboard, then wire and finally plasticard. I mapped out the markings using pencil and then going over it with plastic glue.
I wanted to copy the giant, angry eyes on the Ariel artwork but also have a network of veins indicating rot spreading across the wings as though it was blooming out from her body.

Truly an ambitious and to date well-executed project for such a lazy and moving person! This work is wonderful and I hope the disruptions you're going through allow at least a little time to work and show us the results.

Worked a bit on durthu this evening.
Trying to make him a bit taller/more imposing. Significant amount of converting and sculpting still to do.

Been a long time since I've been able to do anything...
Finally got back onto Durthu, decided to re-do the entire lower half of him to a Faun.
Sculpted out the shoulder as though giant roses are blooming out from within.
Lots more on the way soon, Kurnoth, Drycha, Tree Revs. Hoping to get durthu finished soon.

Still have some Orphan of Kos-style wings to do on her but happy with the results so far. Turns out Tree Revenant hair is a very good substitute for vines...who knew...

Extremely rad. I really like the Kurnoth part of the range but don't care at all for the Elves. You've nicely replaced Elves with Skeletons and I'm entirely onboard

Drycha nearly finished, I wanted the wings to evoke both the Orphan of Kos and Malenia. As though we was dragging itself out of the forest floor to attack its victim.
