I got through quite a few of the HH novels a while back, had to put them down once I read the gak that was Damnation of Pythos.

Now the story has progressed to the Siege of Terra, which novels are the essential reading for the rest of the main storyline? I've looked over a number of helpful diagrams but got lost pretty quickly.

Scars and Path of Heaven are excellent.

Titandeath is aptly named and has some cool parts.

The Siege goes from strength to strength IMO but it's getting silly with three finale books.

Said it before, will say it again: the Visions of Heresy is not only a collected artbook, but a very nice summary of everything up to Siege. If you plan on reading the Dan Abnett "Saturnine" then I'd re-read his other works, as it's all connected.. maybe?

While I'm on Saturnine:
Spoiler:
So- Mr. Land Rock-cretes some drill-ships into the Palace's basement... While the mortal crew will die from any number of things, the traitor Astrates can go into the Catalepsean sleep- so, THEY ARE STILL THERE!
It'd be nice if current lore addressed this, but w/e..

Ooh, is it getting a bit ridiculous then?

Three books for the finale has irritated many because nobody knows why it needs to be three.

Right- first off, I goofed: It's the Sus-an Membrane (Catalepsean node makes it so SM's don't have to sleep- but it looks like Cataleptic, so my mistake..) And yep- the body shuts down 100%. No metabolism. Heck, Rylanor survived the virus-bombing even though the bombs are made to go through vents and seals, so the sarcophagus of the dread wouldn't do much of anything. But the sus-an also makes a weird electrical field around the SM that kills bacteria and such- so there ya go!
