Hello, I'm Godfiend and I'm addicted to tabletop games. This project log will contain my adventures painting 40k, Age of Sigmar, Bolt Action, Cyberpunk, and more! I'll be switching projects frequently because I get bored quickly, but hopefully a keeping a record of what I've worked on will encourage me to actually finish stuff more often.

I'm a pretty average painter so I'm also looking for any thoughts & feedback on how to improve! Same with my photography, I'm working on it but there's a lot to improve there.

To get started, here's some Maelstrom gang members I just finished for Cyberpunk Red: Combat Zone.

I'm getting ready to batch paint about 30 bolt action American paratroopers.

Here's most of the models, after a zenithal prime, black wash, & white drybrush:

And here's basically all the paints I'm using for step 1:

I'm going to cover everything but the skin, then do a brown/black oil wash, then go back and do the skin on the rest. Should actually move pretty fast - I think I can do about 10 minutes per model. More updates soon!

Lots of progress on the speed painting, probably about 10 hours total on these guys. Just gotta do a couple of details, varnish, and do some basing. Then onto the next batch!

I've wrapped up the first batch of paratroopers:

And I've started the next big batch:

This batch will be special weapon teams, NCOs, and officers. I'm identifying the NCOs and Officers with the horizontal and vertical stripes as they did in real life:

At this rate, it takes me about 10 to 15 hours to complete a batch to a standard I'm very happy with, so hopefully I can get this army painted up pretty quickly! I might take longer on this 2nd batch as I want the officers to look good.

I finished up the 2nd big batch of paratroopers:

I tried using a different set of paints for the skin tones and couldn't get them to give me something I was happy with, which is why a bunch of them look like pale ghosts.

I also painted up a tiger in about 5 hours:

One more batch of paratroopers to go and I can play them!

This year, I really want to improve my painting. I want to get a display-level quality painting I can be proud of. So to start this off, I'm going to paint a Lord of Plagues loosely following a youtube guide from Darran Latham.

Here's the model, primed & ready to go:

With some skin started:

The skin came out a bit chalky, which I think was due to not thinning the paint enough. It's more noticeable in photos than it is IRL, but it's definitely a learning experience.

The armor was done with a stippling effect:

Cloth & some metals done:

The cloth got a couple touch-ups after this photo but in general is way more interesting compared to how flat it looks in the photo.

Looks good! A good model to practice a bunch of techniques on - especially skin shading, which is always hard but you seem to have done really well!

Thanks! It's a really fun model to paint and, like you said, has a great variety of surfaces to play with and learn on.

I'll try to get some better photos, but here's the end result:

Nice stuff all around. Interesting to see such diverse stuff on one blog. The WW2 stuff looks great and that Nurgle dude's skin is well done.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone! I had a blast with the Nurgle guy and will probably paint another similar model soon.

I'm starting Chaos Knights as my next main 40k project, and I found some youtube guides talking about how to paint the frames... naturally, after I had painted one frame (left) using traditional metallics plus an oil wash:

The frame on the right, also shown below, was a few red-browns airbrushed around the frame, a neutral dark gray airbrushed from above to give it a metallic feel, then an actual metallic paint drybrushed across the frame so the high points would actually feel metallic.

Then I added some new paints I saw on a youtube video, wax-based metallic paints from AK:

And I decided it would look cool if it glowed:

Finally, unrelated, I've started the process of learning NMM. Here's the first real test model, all NMM:

Clearly a lot to improve there - welcome any thoughts or feedback on him!

Man, one of these days I really gotta re-organize the painting room and clean up the desk.

NMM has always been a mystery to me so I can't offer any pointers, but I do think it looks good.

Thanks! There's a lot of good content out there but actually going through the process and trying it out is a whole different thing. I just need to practice it a lot more.

But instead... here is my finished 'test' chaos knight. I know of a lot of improvements I'll make for the next one, but at least I'm happy with the weathering on this guy.

I am doing a big batch of cultists and painted up 10, then oil washed them. I then did some skin tones while the oil was still wet and it turned out pretty well! I'm really happy with how it looks and only hope I can recreate it in the future.

I've been working on a warmachine model for an online competition. It's been a fun process of trying a ton of new things, including a deep dive into NMM.

Lots of work still to do but it's been a ton of fun so far and I'm learning a lot.
