Hi guys,
So, I'vent played or collected since 9th dropped, I've stopped in 8th, and I played mainly SM and Guard. I own no primaris or new guards models.
I've been offered to play a game of 10th this Thursday, and I gladly accepted ! However, I have absolutely no clue of the state of the game nowadays...
So basically, seeing as first born have been half erased from the game (I still remember people saying on this very forum it would never happen ) I plan on playing with my old guard, which is focused on tanks (it's based on the armored company list of old). Basically my question is as follows : is it playable ? Not necessarily game breaking tier, but will I have fun ? Is there anything "important" that I need to know that I won't get just by learning the basic rules this weekend ?
Thank you very much !

Yes it's playable.
Though all your vehicles are now limited to no more than 3 copies of the same thing - squadrons of 3 Russ etc are a thing of the past.

Will you have fun? {Shrugs} None of us can really answer that one.

Things you definitely need to know if your going to play vehicle heavy forces:
● see the section in the rules called Bug Guns Never Tire.
● Then read the section on that in the Rules Commentary.
●Know the rules concerning LoS, cover, and area terrain/ruins.

Go to GWs site & download yourself the following:
The core rules
The rules commentary
The balance slate
The monitoring field guide (its where the pts are)
The Astra Militarum index

I thought all the Firstborn marines were LEGENDS'd, meaning they were updated to 10th edition with a warning that they would receive no future balance updates.

Dakka's Dive-In is the only place you'll hear what's really going on in the underhive. Sure, the amasec is more watery than a T'au boarding party but they can grill a mean groxburger. Just watch for the occasional ratling put through a window and you'll be alright.
It's classier than that gentleman's club for abhumans, at least.

Many, but not all.

And a lot just don’t bother to keyword anymore. A sternguard with a bolter is a sternguard with a bolter. New bodies are primaris scale, but the rules don’t care.

And some units like assault marines can be swapped out for assault intercessors with minimal fuss, assuming wargear matches.

And tacs and devs still endure.

the rules don't care up until you try to put them in to a razorback.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

Ok, valid point.

Some transports still care. But others do not. GW is nothing but inconsistent.

There are still some messy middle spots in the transition.

Re: Guard - The game went crazy in terms of tossing out force restrictions, so if you want to field a tank focussed Guard army that should be real easy to do.

Re: TrueMarines - It just depends on what you have to field, but if you're in an environment with Legends you have access to most of your options. Even without Legends you get Tacticals, Devastators, Terminators and a whole bunch of tanks, which is plenty to make solid army.

Orrr. . . Start looking at playing old editions or alternative rulesets like GrimdarkFuture.

And They Shall Not Fit Through Doors!!!

"Fun" is subjective. I've enjoyed 10th thus far having played games with Guard, Deathwatch, and CSM.

While some people don't like the special rule on the Guard tanks, I do. The rules give them each a niche that IMO makes it more enjoyable like Executioner's getting bonuses to damaged units.

Yeah I've downloaded the free rules and it appears 10th is a bit different, quite "simple"... Like, I can play DKK infantry with a cadian HQ ? It does feel and look like "Open play".
At least I can play my tanks without too much troubles but... Where are the veterans ? There are only very rigid infantry squads or stormtroopers. I understand that it isn't a codex yet, so wait and see but it's annoying rn.
Indeed, I could and probably should play older editions like 4th-8th, as all my friends and I still have our old books and mini and they all stopped playing around 8th like me, but this time I've been offered a game of 10th, and I'm not that closed minded that I won't even try it.
Thanks for the answers !

Veterans seem to have been replaced by Cadians, Death Korps, and Catachans so just use whatever profile works best for the models you have.
