This is about games which allow models to move shortened distances while they’re far apart, and longer distances when they’re close together.


If you wanted to play a game with say marauding cavalry pillaging the countryside, or with heavy artillery and infantry on the same board, something like this can kind of cram more inches onto the same gaming table.

If you’ve published rules like this or played a game like it, I’ll buy a copy

That's what I thought first as well. The only reason I'd see myself ever even trying to do something like this would be if your goal is to combine a skirmish level and "epic" level all on the same tabletop. That said... I think even in that niche circumstance that I'd simply prefer to have a dual board system instead. One for the 28mm actual combat and the other being 3-6mm for mass troop or regional movement.

Traditional 40k in a way
- Single move at distance
- Double move into close combat
- No move using artillery and other long range heavy weapons

It wasn't based on distance to enemy as such but the gun-lines at the back of old edition tables were static/slow moving while movement greatly accelerated at point of contact with assaults and follow-ons.

I have seen some of it in Napoleonic/Horse and Musket games with reserve moves.

However, I can't think of any others.

I believe the earlier editions of WHFB and 40k explained the scale as being non-linear in order to make ranges work better. As troops neared each other, the tempo increased so the troops effectively moved faster than they did at a distance.

I can't think of miniatures games that dilate distance, but lots do something similar with time. IIRC, the Brigade Series (which is really boardgame using miniatures rules) has night turns that are twice as long as daylight ones to reflect the slowdown of activity.

Lots of games have "strategic movement" or something that allows speedy relocation. I recall some desert armor doing "macro-turns" where players move more freely because contact has not yet been established. One it is, things slow down significantly.
