I have been trying to see how the game plays by watching YT video battle reports, but so far every single one I've seen was either played pretty badly at best or just so appalingly that my WFB vet's heart broke at worst. After the last one, where a guy took a unit of trolls just to deploy them outside of generals Ld (yeah, I scrolled to the end of the video, they stayed there the entire time) I gave up. In most reports, players just shove things forward, charging at first opportunity regardless of whether it makes sense or not and they completely disregard probabilities of success when making any RNG-involving decisions. Seeing even pretty basic things like baiting a charge at a desired angle to flee and put the opponent's unit in a bad position has never happened in any of those games.

To make things clear, I am not looking for powergamer battles, but just for players who are decently competent and occasionally make you go "Oh, that was a neat move! I'm sure this threw his opponent of the track!" or at least sometimes "Damn, that was super smart! I would have never thought of solving this situation like that!".

This also involves list building. Once again, I don't need to see 30 gyrocopters or 200 skinks on the table to know they can make a mess of their opposition, but also watching reports where players don't take any chaff units at all is just such a waste of time (like Lizardmen players taking multiple blocks of Saurus and no Skink skirmishers at all for some reason known only to themselves).

So, any interesting battles out there with competent players making smart moves?

I've seen them, I don't think they are particularly competent as players (surprising, because they seem to play a lot, at least YT shows me new videos very often). Actually my example of a nonsense all-blocks, no-chaff Lizardmen army is from one of their reports.

Maybe they are better now, with so many games under their belts. I'll see if some of their newer games make more sense.

SN Battle Reports is alright. I don't care for Mountain Miniatures. The main guy is always so confident in his incorrect rulings, it drives me crazy.

I checked them and wasn't impressed. A Brett player who apparently doesn't know that if he overruns into another enemy after a successful charge (silly 5 direwolf bait - totally worth sending your huge lance after), he will get countered with a flank charge on the opponent's turn and has 0 chance of winning combat (another example of the common YT illness "chargal mustness"). Of course having a sacrificial unit to put in the way of this flanking counter to redirect it never crossed his mind...eh...

Also, checking the comments section immediately gives you an idea how many rules are played wrong in a report, and this SN channel isn't doing too well in that respect.

I know, they are all terrible. I love watching games, but the sheer incompetence in published battle reports is depressing. One of the guys from Mini Wargaming knows the rules pretty well, but doesn't know how to maneuver, so he makes bizarre choices.

I found one! This one feels actually well played by the Chaos player - redirecting, baiting enemies into overrun traps and closing them. The Dragon helps ofc, and is an "easy" button wherever it's employed, but the rest of the army seems to also be used very well.

The guy appears to be aware of what his units can and can't achieve against a particular opponent, and uses them accordingly (for example keeping his infantry back in the Bretonnia battle). Who would have thought that you can try to predict where enemy units are going to end up after your opponent's turn! Shocking!

In denial

The game is new to these youtubers. They'll get there.

By their own admission, they were children during Fantasy's prime, collecting random models. They play the game as if it's AoS or 40K, trying to create optimal matchups unit to unit with no regard to how to field an army that works in conjunction with it's individual elements. There is no inclination of timing, just move forward and throw dice. I've watched plenty from different content creators, and most games are lost due to poor deployment.
In their defense, they are just trying different things to get a feel for the rules. I was the same 30 years ago.
Inexperienced players gravitate to what they believe is optimal based on individual unit stats w/attached characters.
Examples include:

-Dragons and similar w/tooled up characters
-Level 4 casters
-Ubiquitous MIs (ruby ring of ruin etal)
-Deathstar units

In conjunction with this, these same players complain about the power level of the aforementioned examples.
Recent tournaments also demonstrate this.
When the dust settles on this game, advanced play will emerge.

The fun part is I have no intention of playing ToW I am just trying to follow how the game is doing for old times sake, like an ex you know getting back with is a terrible idea but you still wish her well and, should you meet her in the street, you would listen to how she is doing with genuine interest and care

Anyway, I found another channel with promising reports and a very experienced player.

The first Adepticon one unfortunately turns out to be a downer, but not due to the channel owners fault, the rest is fine. I believe future reports from this channel can be quality content.

Another solid one.

I like how these Forsaken and Warrior units get thrown around all over the table with Steed of Shadows. Chaos Warrior infantry plays like Eldar Jetbikes

I was going to link this one. I enjoyed this report.

I'm a fan of Rogue Element Gaming, who primarily does 6th ed WHFB reports but recently started doing The Old World. Although, he might be the one you saw put his trolls out of his General's LD range, he makes some questionable decisions sometimes. He generally tries to get the rules correct even if his tactics aren't the best, though. I found he and his opponents to be very useful when I built my own 6th ed VC army last year

Mountiain Miniatures is...OK I guess. I like that they're passionate about the game, but they play a LOT of different armies across a lot of different editions and don't optimize the armies for any of them, so they constantly mix up rules and make some very strange armybuilding decisions based on what they originally built for 8th ed. Mountain Minis is much more of a channel I'll leave in the background while painting than something I watch to learn more about the game

This channel also shows competent gameplay, albeit with a boring army - mostly shooty Dwarfs :(

This particular report's first battle also shows a solid Lizardmen army with a good number of Skinks. How cheap and efficient they are with these poison blowpipes was actually the first thing I noticed when I saw new rules for Lizardmen, so I was quite shocked to see that nobody on YT was using massed Skinks in their battle reports (as I have already mentioned in the original post).
