Hi. I'm a new player trying to build an Ultramarine army. I am seriously considering putting a Jump Pack Chaplain in charge of 10 Jump Pack Intercessors, and I'm finding a lot of the information here and elsewhere to be outdated.

The unit is specifically sold as a Blood Angels leader, but it appears to be legal in an Ultramarines list, right? It it worth adding 75 points to a fairly cheap unit?

GW is selling a very old model for $35 and ebay has it a little cheaper. It's very Blood Angels, but people say the conversion isn't too bad. I don't hate the design, but it's clearly from a different era than everything else I own.

Would you buy one or do you think a new version is coming?

Thanks.

Anyone who tells you not to field a chaplain is a faithless heretic.

Compare him with a jump captain, who is just a few more points. The chaplains buff is just better. +1 to wound all the time vs. +1S on the charge. The captain is a better individual beatstick. Not that the chaplain is a slouch. Rite of battle is nice, but so are free mortal wounds.

At some point GW will probably make a primaris jump chaplain. When they do the wargear options on the old one will probably be trimmed to match. So I would be careful (or magnitize) a kitbash. Although crozius is going to be the melee weapon, who knows what the shooty bit will be.

I’d guess we might see one of they do a Blood Angels drop, but that’s a wild guess.

Converting models into chaplains is not hard. A black paint job, bunch or purity seals, and a hafted weapon with an ornate top go a long way. If not going bare headed skull helms are a must, but you can poach one from a reiver.

For up to date information all you have to do is read your Codex.

Yep.
Or you could just buy a foot chaplain & bitz order a jump pack....

But if you want a pretty nice looking jump pack character you should consider getting Dominion Zephon, The Bringer of Sorrow, from the Horus Heresy line.
He's absolutely a Blood Angel, BUT it's a very nice plastic kit & extremely easy to shave off the blood drops from the shoulder pad skull, the right knee guard & the belt piece.
Ok, as is he's wielding a 2 handed sword - but this is easily swapped out for a bitz ordered crozious.

Absolutely.
Don't look at it as adding him to a cheap unit, look at it as adding cheap ablative wounds & extra attacks to him.

Get it as cheap as possible.
They're correct, the conversion is easy enough. Though I'd still recommend Zephon from the HH range.
It being a different style than your other stuff & how you feel about that is a factor that only you can truly asses. Me? If I liked the model it wouldn't bother me at all.

Yes I would buy one now. That's because I play games in the present.
So if my current plans involved a Chaplain? Then I'd buy one without a moments hesitation concerning what GW might do at some future date.
The worst that'll happen? GW eventually releases a model I like better. In wich case I'd buy that one as well & then have TWO chaplains.

I'd go get a classic jump pack chaplain in metal off of ebay. He has a tactical rock that elevates him so he'd fit in better with primaris and he doesn't have any BA iconography. The plastic blood angels one is just goofy looking.

If you're planning to run the chaplain in an unit of JP intercessors, I strongly recommend using a primaris model (or at least one of the newer HH models*) as the base of the conversion. Older non-primaris marines will look tiny and weird next to the primaris.

(* These are not as large as primaris, but still bigger and better proportioned than old models.)

I think the new primaris jump captain would be the easiest way to do it, you just need a weapon and head swap.

I think it gives them character. In our local Crusade league, my Primaris Sternguard are being led around by a Firstborn Lieutenant and Firstborn Apothecary.

From a fluff POV, I like the concept of the old firstborn vets/command lending their experience to the new kids. Their years of service and knowledge too valuable to risk crossing the rubicon primaris.

From an aesthetic standpoint, I like the army to look cohesive.

It’s a quandry.

As put here, the Chaplain if a great melee buffer, the +1 to wound in close combat is huge, especially if you can get most of the unit to connect. The only time I've found a preference for the Captains with my Jump infantry (aside from a dedicated Smash Captain) is when leading a unit of Vanguard Vets with Hand Flamers in the Firestorm Detachment because the Captain enables you to use the 2CP Immolation Protocols strat for free which does a lot of damage.

Also, currently there are a lot of weapon options for the Chaplain, Power fist, Inferno pistol, ect. Just be careful when doing your conversions as when this inevitably gets a new Primaris model, most of these options will likely go away.
