Subject: Sending your RPG to the military for clearance?

OK, I've been doing some research for my RPG using the NATO website and their information, and emailing their staff to clarify events so I can avoid any real operations.
I got a response that before my RPG is to be published, they want me to mail a copy of it to them in Belgium to look over first.
Is this normal?

Um... maybe because you reached out to actual NATO for your game? Why did you speak to NATO?
|
These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Clarification.
If you want to use their logos or flags, you have to have the manuscript approved.
I'm not sure what they consider OK for approval. It is a fictional game, based loosely on actual events from the Cold War.

Any imagery and names are likely copyrighted. For example M4.
Otherwise anything you write about that is open source is your own business. If you have past involvement in activities you will have your countries version of the UK official secrets act and that will include who to contact. A staff member then checks it over and tells you if you are breaching anything.

Maybe you can trick them into playtesting it for you somehow.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it. |

That's not a bad idea. I thought I would put the whole game into a ciper and let them decode it.

When I was still in the Guard, I wrote a novel based on my experiences at the Deepwater Horizon oil spill recovery (Three Weeks with the Coasties: A Tale of Disaster and also an Oil Spill).
Anyhow, my commander asked that I run it through proper channels, so I sent it to DoD and got a nice letter not long after saying it was cleared for publication, which was kind of cool.

That's good to know that it wasn't an arduous process.
