Many years ago, GW released a PDF with experimental terrain rules.. You could get eaten by a plant, fall into a pit and all kinds of fun stuff.. Does anyone know if that PDF is still available somewhere?

I'm not sure.. This was just a pdf, not laid out as part of a book.. Pretty sure it also had a part that let you design your own "monster"

There was a slew of creative articles like hat in 3rd, early 4th edition, here's part of it http://www.advancedtautactica.com/resource/CreatureFeatureGenerator.pdf More link, not sure if the downloads work https://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2012/04/death-worlds-and-other-deadly.html From the good times when 40k was about playing in a shared universe, not a clinically sterile esport.

There was certainly nothing clinical about your army being removed by dozens of Starcannon shots every turn, first turn Rhino assaults, immortal flying clown cars, 'roll on this table to see how your dudes die before they even make it to the table', etc...

Games where you were more afraid of the terrain than the other player were fun once in a while. I think 4th was pretty much the creative high water mark.

What I really love about it, is the fact that you can't predict everything A bit like playing goblins or skaven, random stuff happens hehe
