Subject: Warrior Prime - How is it different?

I played my second game of 40k last night. I used newrecruit.eu to generate my army list, and had a 300 point Tyranid army. Sorted and printed and off to t he game I went. But I notice it lists a "Warrior Prime" but I can't for the life of me figure out what makes it different? Picture just for attention (lots of proxy models in use while I furiously paint more space cockroaches).

There are two Tyranid Warrior Primes. One that is in the Warrior Squad, either ranged or melee and functions like a Sargent does in other armies. Second is the Winged Prime that is a character that can join squads and gives the Sustained Hits buff.

The Tyranid Warriors kit makes three models, and includes bitz to make one of them a Warrior Prime. In previous editions, the Prime was a character that would be fielded separately, but this would leave the kit with only two other models - which, if this was your first kit, isn't enough to make a legal unit. As part of the simplification of 40k, GW demoted the Prime to unit champion (much like a sergeant) so that players didn't need to buy three models just to make a character.
They did same thing to the Neurothrope, too.

Do primes do anything but have a fancy hat these days? I know they historically did, but looking at the datasheets it looks like it’s jist extra fluff with no crunch?

Nope, there's nothing that sets them apart. The walking primes are fairly meaningless right now. They have exactly the same statline and equipment as a standard warrior from their squad.

The winged prime is meanwhile waiting for GW to release either a winged warrior new kit or a shrike kit so that the winged prime can lead a unit of warriors and not waste the fact that it's got wings.
Perhaps also a new winged prime kit that isn't push-fit and thus has all the options to build weapon loadouts.
