Hi Dakkanauts,
I've made a terrain set for sci-fi wargaming, which I hope to bring out sometime this year. I'm doing it all myself and boy is there a lot to do.
I'm looking for advice from someone that's been in a similar situation....in particular with online selling. I figure Amazon is a good way to get all my ducks in a row? My concern is that I won't sell enough because I don't know marketing, and Amazon's fees will strip all the profits.
FYI I'm getting a website together now, but currently I don't plan to take payment through it.
Anyone here been through this themselves?
Thank you!
Ben

Lots of terrain sellers on Etsy. It's a straightforward platform to sell on, roughly 16% fees which I don't mind given the traffic they bring, and you get good support with postage issues when you use etsy labels.

Amazon can be a mixed bag of issues that seem to be dependent on country shopping. They also have issues with discovering your products, Etsy I think is much better for small businesses.
You can easily use a few websites stores, if you have the basic skills there are a few that make a storefront effort a half hour work.
You can also use eBay, I use eBay a lot still. And 99% of the time no issues at all.

It sounds like you are on the right track by planning a website and considering online sales channels. Amazon can give you exposure, but fees can reduce profits, especially for small production runs. Many small creators start with direct sales through their website or niche communities where people already follow your type of product, like tabletop or wargaming forums.

Marketing will be important, social media, posting photos of your terrain sets, and engaging with the community can help build interest without huge costs. When I was looking into the business side of small projects, I also researched company setup and compliance. Services like Incorp can help you understand steps like registering a business and handling filings, which makes it easier to focus on creating and selling your product.
