I play necrons primarily, and I'm quite happy they got a new codex because it's pretty flippin sweet, but the new 6th edition codexs are gorgeous. Since they are hard back, full color. Yes they maybe a bit more expensive... Just as a reality check we're playing 40k so we already give GW all our money. So basically what I'm saying is I would have like necrons to be a true 6th edition codex.

Anyone else really liking the new codex style / wish their recently updated codex was a full color hardback?

It's not that there's anything wrong with the "style" of the new codices, but the price is a bit much. Kinda unnecessary to make them bigger hardcover books and charge more, now they're harder to fit into bags too.

Still, at least your old codex is quite playable *cough, understatement, cough*.

I wish my college text books were the same price as codex, all I'm saying is a little extra quality goes a long way.

I would gladly trade "quality" for a codex that I could fit in my backpack or bag easily.

If they can make a mini 40k rulebook in paperback (AND COLOR) why can we not have mini codexes? I hate lugging my friggin codexes around in games, they're huge and don't need to be that large. They take up a lot of space, are clumsy to flip through, and have a lot of unnecessary text in certain areas (for example, I love fluff and all, but there should be a few pages always dedicated to just rules, stats, and upgrades, with no extra crap whatsoever, detailing everything your army can do)

And I have paperback ones. When my armies get updated for 7th/8th whatever, if they're hardbacks as well I may well consider quitting (if only because the codexes will cost around $70 by then ) They're getting outrageous and are a pain in the arse to lug around too.

I see where your coming from OP, the 6th codexs look really nice, and would make a fine addition to my book case with my main rulebook

However the price is excessive and they will be a PITA to carry around.

As much as I play crons and would like a new codex...
Other armys really do need a 6th ed codex more than us.

And I wouldnt buy a hard-back reprint because I have already spend the cash on a normal codex.

I wish that my codex cost $150 like a textbook, because then the people who think that it's insane to have a book cost more than $5 would get a sense of perspective about the current prices.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

For the record, you're not actually getting a big markup in quality. Hardcover books cost about 25 cents more to make than a softbound book of the same content, and when bought in bulk, I'd imagine the cost for colour printing can't be excessively expensive these days. You're paying for the perception of quality, not actual quality. Just understand that the change to hardcover books was nothing more than a grab for increased profits, not an actual increase in the quality of your product.

Moreover, if I'm buying a book of supplementary rules for a game, I want them to be as easy to use in that context. Thicker, heavier, and more cumbersome hardback books do not make for easier quick reference material. What's more, they're a pain to actually carry around (for example, I can't carry a hardcover book in my case, but I can fit a bunch of the old softcover codecies in it.

Second this. Like, really guys, I am fine with paying so much for a book that's valid for 5-10 years. But if I had a choice, I'd still go for the cheapest possible solution. I only need those at GW tournaments anyway, I got an ebook-reader for the rest of the time.

Indeed. People assume that CoR etc are all essentially zero.

I would love mini codexes, but the justification just isnt there for it.

I love the new codexes, even splashed out on the limited DA one for my hubby, who is a bit of a fan of DA and its his birthday. COnsidering how much small print run books can cost, its expensive but reasonably so.

That's why I said fifteen dollars, I'm not expecting a flipping university textbook. When I can buy a codex for more than I spend on a guidebook like the Star Wars Essential Chronology, which is roughly three times the length of a codex, there's more going on that just simple price inflation.

I wish they would print them in both an abridged, mini paperback version and a full-size, hardback deluxe version. That way people could have a choice. I know lots of people with older paperback codexes would take them to Kinko's and have the binding removed, then have them spiral bound. That meant that you could lay the book out flat when flipping through rules during the game.

Spiral-bound is indeed handy for manuals and the like, though needs decent-quality paper so that it doesn't rip from around the holes.

I find the new codex to be terrible value. I jumped the gun and bought the hard cover rulebook. Hardcovers are so impractical if you are mobile. I'll be downloading all my content from now on.

Since the local store is not a GW one, and the players not overly fussy, once BT and C:SM get a new Codex (the former probably in the year 39 999 or so) and it's hardcover, if I can't get it in a digital format that I can use (since right now it's just Apple, and I don't and won't have any of their products) I'll probably just buy the book and then photocopy the absolutely necessary pages rather than hauling the entire book around all the time. In Finland this is legal as fair use for personal purposes, in case anyone wonders. In fact if a library were to have 40k codices, copying them for personal use from there would be legal too. Heh.

The new are codexs are nice but expensive, although I don't have storage problems with my codex. The only problem is its to big so I can't put it on the table when the game is in full swing and I can't hold it because I also have a rulebook plus my friends codex won't fit either. They should make the glorious codexs they already make (for the fluff and stuff) and small compact books with just the rules.

Yes, the hardbacks are nice, but £5-£10 too expensive for the number of pages.

In non GW world, the special edition version would be the hardback, with a normal bound copy for everyone else.

I genuinely used to buy every codex and army book, but now I get one a year at most. To be honest, I'm kind of done with GW stuff, but DA was too big of a lure.

While Peregrine & I don't normally see eye-to-eye, I have to say, I'm in 100% agreement this time!

Seriously, GW books aren't that much worse than other hardcovers, while the BL books are right on par price-wise.
Sure, it's now $60(can) upfront. But your codex is good for at least 5-6 years before a re-do, so really, you're paying all of $10-12/year to play your army. Boo-fething-hoo!

The new hardcovers are too bulky/heavy?
What are you, a weedy little grot?! It's not like you're lugging around something as hienous as a full hockey equipment bag or being forced to bring half a library with you like high school required.

The quality is no better?
Because the current "quality" is sooooo much better... Besides the fact that I have to treat my damn Smurf Codex like it's a bloody antique so the binding doesn't explode, and the rest of the softbacks are little better. Or that I can so easily bend/fold the cover, or that my cat can chew the damn thing with ease, or that eventually the binding WILL give out and I'll be forced to sink more cash into it to get it fixed...

Bring on the harcovers - please! For the extra cost, it's well worth the added sturddiness!

The textbook comparison is a terrible, terrible comparison.

Textbooks used in studies usually consist of articles written by actual experts on certain issues, people who know what they're doing and have a good reputation.

A textbook is infinitely more valuable than any product GW will ever offer. It's a piece of science.

A codex is nothing but a work of fiction that often comes at a very weak quality (DEAR GOD, NEWCRONS!) and a few rules.

“One of the most expensive is science,” McGee said. “You have to hire medical illustrators to do all the art.” When she was in the business, the cost of producing a new biology book could run to $5 million. “The investments are really great and it’s all on risk.”

This. I prefer the softcover non-color for this reason. Not that a book as small as these codexes should be $50 hardcover or not. In any regard they had a simple charm to them.

And the tetbook comparison is terrible yes. Textbooks require professionals and heavy research. Codexes are game books, and as seen by the recent DA codex there's little quality control given we have passages about vampire count.

What, say compare the cost and quality of one of the hardcover codices to that of FF's 40k RPG books? The Dark Heresy: The Inquisitor's Handbook (a supplemental rule set, the core rule book for the game is is $59.95), hard cover, and 256 pages long. It's got color artwork, fluff blurbs out the wazoo, and as a bonus, someone actually proofread it. Thing is even cheaper from Amazon. For the cost and what you get, the hardcover codices are screw jobs. Not gonna stop me from buying at the moment, but it'd be nice if people didn't gush about how awesomely awesome they are when they stack up so poorly when compared to other gaming materials. Buying the game doesn't mean you have to drink the kool-aid.

Uhm...? Those RPG books have at least 4-5x the size of a GW codex...and are full color...FoW rulebook. Check it.

I like the hardcover codexes (codicies?) too.

I don't really mind the increased cost, since I only buy one every few years when a new CSM, C:SM or Necron codex is released.

Get an IPAD. That fits into your bag quite easily.

You can also use an andriod tablet and figure out a different way to get copies of your codex' on it.

Hate that they are more expensive, hate the new format. Best think codex wise in a long time are mini rulebooks. If the main book can be in the "mini" format, certainly the codexes as well.
