I want to start a new game and having played both WHFB and 40k and finding them both a little expensive and too high of a model count, and currently being on a FoW binge (Yes tons of models, but easier to paint) I didn't know what I should start next. If you don't mind vote which one you think I should start and why.
Thanks in advance.

As I have stated before. For well under 100 USD, you can have a competative crew. The game is played a bit different from other games.
1. Choose faction you are playing.
2. Get mission and schemes figured out.
3. Hire crew.
A basic starter box, rules manual, and deck of cards is around 65.00 to 70.00 dollars. Pick up a few blisters and you are getting there.
What do you get for 100 from GW? Not a legal army, and no rule books.

I went for Malifaux as well. It's a great game that really stands out with unique mechanics such as using a deck of cards instead of dice, and a plethora of 'strategies and schemes' (objectives) so each game is so different - from assassinations to disarming dynamite to protecting a supply wagon as it moves across the board. As martin74 said, it's a relatively inexpensive game too, as a crew box will give you all the models you need to form a small force, and the rulebook doesn't cost the earth either.
If you have any particular questions re Malifaux I'm more than happy to help, or the Malifaux sub-forum here is rather good

Malifaux has a completely different look and feel to it, and has a unique playing system (which isn't always a good thing, but works here)
I really enjoy the minis, as there are very few that i can say i dont like. They also used basically a "true scale" system, since its technically a 32mm game, but most minis are skinnier and smaller than most gw units.

Buy your Malifaux from Amazon and the like, it makes the game EVEN cheaper. I bought the rulebook, my brew + teddy, the wifes crew + doves and 2 fate decks and shipped here it was like $120. Thats incredible.
Not to mention the game is great fun.

You can start either, or both.
A starter set for Malfaux is around 25 bucks or so. you can get a couple fo blisters for 10-15, and there you go.
A rulebook, maybe a faction deck?, you won't need much more then that. These new sets look tight, I'd recommend one of those, as they are new and have the most love so far.
The PP stuff is a little different.
If you opt to pick a starter set, you can direct your purchases at the one faction. Say I want trolls, I'd get a couple of troll beasts, Axers, and throwers, maybe- a caller, and a squad or two of infantry, some shooters, and some hand to hand- Axers, or grunt types, and then branch out from there, get a minion set, get an add on.
Warmachine is a variation on a theme, as well. Get a couple of jack's and a warcaster. Then add on your infantry attachment, or specialize. Get a couple of grunts, some indirect fire, maybe a character killer... Then the rulebook. If you dig around, theres plenty on Ebey, and at stores. Swapshops got a gak load, too.
Either of these games, you can have fun with around 20 models or less.

I play both, but prefer Warmahordes. The reason is because there is no pretense. It's just a smash mouth game that I like the feel of. Most of the rules make sense and I usually use most or all of the abilities.
In Malifaux I've found that even though each piece has way more powers, I usually just fall back on the one big trick for each and the game just became stale. I still love the models and the fluff though.
If you can afford it, I'd say go for both.

I'd say go for both as I play both, but Malifaux is definitely my more played game atm, and the one that I find to be more fun (Mostly because I got flak for playing Trollbloods... idk why D
This argument has recently come up here:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/503870.page
And you might find something of use
Also if you're not sure, get a Demo... idk about Warmachine, but from a look at this list here, and a quick google search, there are 2 Henchmen (people who demo and run Malifaux events) within a half hour. 1 in Anderson, and the other in Central. It might be worth it to give a PM to one of the henchmen and ask for a demo. Also, according to Wyrd's Website, Planet Comics sells Malifaux and has a Henchman that frequents the store.

While there are probably people on both sides, get demos of both, decide which you like more and play what you enjoy! Have fun expanding beyond the shadows of GW's ivory tower, there is plenty of gaming to be had

First - What do people play around you? What do the people you like play? (Could be different)
I have a small army/crew for both Warmachines and Malifaux. I love the Warmachines plastic models, in terms of assembly, details, etc. I have not looked at the Malifaux plastics but the metal models are not bad. I really enjoy the card mechanic of Malifaux, but it does seem a little more complicated to start with than Warmachine, in terms of rules, etc. but that will probably translate to longer enjoyment.
If I had it to do over, I think I would figure out which of the two seems to have more interest in the area and then start playing that. If it was a tie, I think Malifaux probably has more bang-for-the-buck.

Sometimes it's not a bad thing to be the guy that starts the interest... I just recently moved out of the town where I started my henching at for Malifaux. I went from a community that played Warmachine as it's primary game that would play ALMOST any other game simply every few months because we all like gaming to a place that is almost exclusively Warhammer 40k and Historicals/Flames of War. I talked about Malifaux with the store owner, spent a month coming in once a week with my Malifaux stuff and setting up a board and just sitting there with the game ready to go, and a model, some water, brushes, and paint. I would paint until someone came up to me, set the model down, ask if they had any questions, and if I felt they were interested, I'd ask if they'd like a demo of the game. Henchman status aside, this is something that ANYONE can easily be a part of. Eventually, when someone showed interest on a day that I wasn't there, I brought in a list of things to order that would give a good starter... so rulebooks, decks, a few starter boxes, blisters to improve upon them, and totems... His starting stock was Sonnia, Ramos, and Perdita, 2 Rules manuals, Book 1.5, and 3 decks. It's boomed since then, still not the most popular game at the store, but it's got a small, yet solid community that grew from 1 (me).
Granted, since I was the one perosn that was more into wargaming than my friends, I would often have 2 starter armies... But I mean I didn't really start playing Malifaux as my main game until last February, and it's only become my main game with the exclusion of others (due to time and what not) until like October of 2012. Gaming ebbs and flows, I don't think they're is anything wrong with picking up a starter for a game and painting it, if it becomes popular, you've already got some models and can play, if not, then you've got decent models

I put in for W/H, as I picked up their summer sale for Khador and got a ton of minis, plus the rulebook for $125. It was the starter set, full rulebook, 8 winter guard plus banner bearer and character, and then a unit of snipers too. It's a full 25 point army, and seemed a pretty damn good deal. Malifaux sounds like a decent game to start up too though, so I doubt you'll find yourself going wrong with either. You'll probably have more options for opponents with W/H though.

Just got back from a demo with a Press Ganger playing WM/H and really enjoyed it. Found out that there is an Escalation League only 1 week in, that they've agreed to let me join and are going to loan me an army to use, so I have to say I'm leaning that way. Great guy and the game was fairly easy to grasp and doesn't seem all that expensive.

Excellent!
Malifaux is also holding a World Wide Campaign called Dead of Winter that's in week... 3 atm and goes until Feb 24th. It's designed for new players and consists of 1 day achievement leagues, so it's also a great way to learn.

Always cool to hear of a positive story.
Have fun with the league, those are a lot of fun, you'll be adding in more units before you know it and have your army up and running in no time.
