This epic hunk of steel and hatred of your wrists is an image from the popular video game Just Cause 2. It's also the potential base for my final project at my trade school next year. Gentlemen (and ladies if any of you have deigned to join us in the hive of scum and villainy that is OT) allow me to present the LeMat Mark 2 aka the Hellfiend revolver. I'd have to manufacture this puppy from scratch and register her as an NFA "AOW" (Any Other Weapon) .454 Magnum doesn't actually exist so this particular revolver would be in the .454 Casull revolver round (which means it can take .45 Colt and .45 Schofield if I get tired of trying to snap my wrist in two). The underbarrel 30mm grenade launcher would be replaced (cause it doesn't exist and would be a Class IV destructive device if it did) with an underslung shotgun, probably in 20 gauge or .410, 12 gauge without a buttstock... would hurt to say the least. It would however follow the pattern used on some modern grenade launchers which is a forward motion and swivel, very similar to what is pictured above. Another chambering possibility for the revolver in the recently introduced .460 Smith and Wesson Magnum. So with your Hellfiend, you'll have four options for ammunition you can fire. The big .460 S&W Magnum (because feth you joints!) the .454 Casull for bears and light armored vehicles, and your choice of .45 Colt or .45 Schofield for plinking. All from a single barrel and cylinder. On a cosmetic note my revolvers would not be in *gags* nickle or chrome. Over all it's a rather difficult build, but extremely doable and based on proven technology both for the shotgun modification and obviously the revolver, the Class II AOW registration is the only seriously annoying part once I get the design itself solid. Or I can just continue with my current plan and build a .50 BMG rifle. It is worth noting that if I can get my Trade Masters to accept the Hellfiend project and set a working design, I have three people who want to pre-order one of these monsters, which informs me my friends are at least as crazy as I am. Edit: Edit: Just for proof of concept, here's a Spike's Tactical 37mm Flare Launcher with the side loading breech configuration I'd be looking at.

Go old school and give it a stock option like Colt blackpowder revolvers used to have.

I think I'd have to register it as an AOW and a SBR (short barreled rifle) then.... I'd have to dig into the legality. I'm talking to my trade masters today about the possibility of doing such a project though. If they say they'll let me I'm going to run with it and start work on the design and collecting research information like barrel pressures and parts costs for pistols in .460 S&W MAG. Also start looking into the assembly of the baby .410, gonna require some serious miniaturization and tight detail work, especially based on a side loading breech. Also up to six people wanting to get in line for pre-orders. Seems I've found a niche in the "Psychotic Personal Field Artillery" market...

Would this be illegal in some places due it possably being a concealable shotgun?
While big for a pistol, thats way small for a shotgun. Even a sawed off shotgun can be more bulky.

I believe the explosive round on the bottom might be the issue, not the bullet in the chamber. I'm not sure what the law is regarding Grenade Launchers on pistols is exactly off the top of my head.

Keeping my wrists from being savaged by recoil is why I bought a Chiappa Rhino. Redsign your weapon slightly, putting the main barrel on the bottom of the cylinder and the flare launcher on top. I think it would be easier to manage reloading flares this way while keeping the revolver the same.

He said .454 Casull I believe. Thats a bullet round (pistol albeit BIG pistol). Meh rela men make revolvers for 45-70 Government.
Mind you I can't see the original pic at work. Is there an underslung shotgun round involved?

Yes there is. and I went with .454 cause I like the round and I like being able to drop to .45 Colt for "low power" shooting
Ahtman wrote:

Heh both the grenade launcher and the round would be class IV destructive devices, 30mm grenades also don't exist to my knowledge so that would be an issue. Which is why I'm going with a "master key" shotgun
Grey Templar wrote:Would this be illegal in some places due it possably being a concealable shotgun?

It'd be considered a SBS or AOW, it might be illegal in a few states that specifically prohibit such weapons, but it's just a matter of writing a check out to the ATF every where else as a "Class II" NFA weapon. Still not sure if this is an SBS (short barreled shotgun) or AOW (Any Other Weapon) I think the integrated nature of the weapon takes it to AOW territory... but it's worth noting the Taurus Judge fires pistol rounds and shotgun shells and is not an SBS or AOW.

This is actually one of the redesigns I'm looking at, the above is concept art from the game, I'm working up from there, the issue with the shotgun on top is I still need the sights to align, and I need access to the shotgun's trigger, reaching over the top to grab it wouldn't be extremely ergonomic. Much as I love the Chiappa Rhino and the Mateba Unica 6 it's based on (the latter is on my list of "weapons I must own one day") I don't think that design is going to work in this case.
I'm also considering bumping the shotgun up to a 20 gauge. It honestly probably has similar recoil to a .454 Casull any way.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Grey Templar wrote:Question, will you be selling these or will this just be a "senior project" masterpiece for you and the couple friends to enjoy?

I think so too, if I get a solid design, I'm going to trademark and sell it on my own the second I can get a Class II manufacturer's permit. Batch production of these will keep things fairly simple, especially once I can start farming out some of the more tedious milling work to machine shops. If demand goes from "batch" (say a dozen pistols a year) to "bulk" (hundred+ a year) I'll have to look into doing something different on the production end and maybe partner with a larger company.

With the next best thing being a bullet that deliberatly fragments on impact. An "exploding" bullet if you will. On a round this big you will see chests disappear.

The cocking lever of the Chiappa 200DS is actually a selector for single/dual action. Perhaps you could use that as a mechanism for changing the single mechanical trigger between the gun (.454) and the shotgun. It would make the internal a bit more complicated but you'd gain the ability to have both barrels work off a single trigger. KalashnikovMarine wrote:I'm also considering bumping the shotgun up to a 20 gauge. It honestly probably has similar recoil to a .454 Casull any way.
I guess it depends on which one you expect to be using more.

Hmmmm.... possibly, those would be some seriously complex internals though...*thinking mode*
azazel the cat wrote:I think that is lovely, and I would love to own a .45/.410 version, if there was any legal way to import that into Canada.
The .454 Casull can safely fire .45 Colt the same way a .357 Mag can fire a 38sp. I'm sure there is a legal way to import one... but the "master key" might not be Canada friendly because of how short it is. You have roughly a year and a half to investigate your local laws
Check, then once it's done I transfer it to your local FFL and you pick it up/do your ATF paperwork with him.
