so how does transmuting work in FTB?

If you want to find out how transmuting works look up minium stone.

You can also transmute metals using thaumcraft.

but no mass-transmuting items?

You could possibly set up an automatic transmutation system based around a Soul Shard spawner, with Combat Turtles, a good Pipe system (or Golems), Automatic Crafting Tables, and a mining whatever connected to a cobble generator (or use one of those fancy cobblemaking machines). The Minium stone requirement means you need "Player Kills" on mobs for rare drops- but with Combat Turtles, they count as Player Kills- you could actually use a level 4 or 5 Zombie Soul Shard spawner and collect the resulting iron as well, and use that for some Thaumcraft alchemy.

Also, the fancy Potions thing is in it now- using glass panes for the advanced potion vials.

For all those who do Magery- I invite you all to write your own books detailing your ventures into Magecraft- in-character if you can, though that's not really critical. I'd like to get a library going, where someone who's new to the server or the packs or the process of Thaumcraft or SoulCraft or EE or whatever could do research in order to get started, or to find hints if they get stuck on a bit of research.

"And Lo!" He wrote; adrenaline fuelling his furious scribbles, "It was with great excitement that I happened upon my final clue - the final answer to all my thaumic theories. What was I missing? Why would it not work? How will I ever complete my studies? Who? What? When? Why? Where? How? All of them, answered in one fell swoop. How could I have been so blind before? With trembling hands, I traversed this most sacred text, hungry for answers to questions asked, questions unasked, and questions yet unthought.
"I know what you are thinking, 'what sort of repository of arcane knowledge could possibly exist when so many before myself have spent their lives searching and found nothing?'. I will tell you now, that this knowledge was right beneath our crooked noses the entire time. The bushy moustache of intelligence long grown used to and forgotten, save those times when soup is eaten and you discover half of it still residing upon your upper lip for hours to come.
"What I have discovered here has existed for inumerable ages. Penned by sages orders of magnitude wiser than you and I could hope to be, it acts as a beacon to those who seek answers, but only if they first ask the right questions. I asked my question: What IS thaumaturgy? And thus, I found my answer: "Thaumaturgy... which giveth certain order to make strange works, of the sense to be perceived and of men greatly to be wondered at." - Mathematical Preface to Euclid's Elements (1570), John Dee.
"Ask, and the FTB Wiki shall surely answer."

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I think I may do the same, it'd be neat to create a library of works.

Also, thank you for referencing John Dee, a forgotten mind!

There is a transmutation turtle (turtle+minium stone)

From memory it requires minium shards to power the transmutes, though it could have changed since I last used them

And no mare lag/chicken generator means hopefully I'll have more than 7 fps! (I'm sure I has 30fps before the chicken generator was made...)

For transmuting, Equivalent Exchange 3 has the same exchange rates for blocks of items that it does for the inogts/gems. This means that you can transmute 9 times more stuff, if you block up items. An item from Factorization does that automatically, I think it's a packager or something like that. So rather than the Minium stone having 1521 uses (I think) it has 9 times that many. But one stone will last a fair while- we're still on our first one.

Dear Magical Diary:
Today I transmuted 32 Stacks of Iron into a stack of Diamonds. Me and the lava played catch with them. The lava is very good at catching. Her throwing leaves a little to be desired, as does her giving back the diamonds.

Wasn't there talk of Mob griefing being turned off? After my MFSUs and Mass fabricator got blown up, I kinda could have done with that.

I tested it out for a while (before I made the server available to you guys) but didn't like it for several reasons.

1) It affects more than just creepers, ghasts can't break netherrack anymore - the nether is supposed to be a crumbly dangerous place.
2) With even just iron armor, creepers become a non-issue, just let them explode and ignore them. Plain zombies are more dangerous as they at least attack continuously until you kill them. Instead of turning off mobgriefing, might as well just disable creepers, but as far as I'm aware, it's not possible, yet.
3) While I love to see the exposed workings of complex machines, there should be at least some risk, you should need to make some defences of some kind. (See spawn - it's completely ring fenced and lit and I've been patching any holes other people leave behind. It's not 100% mob proof, but it's good enough).

The mega-build age was going to be my compromise on still having mob-griefing on. It was going to be an entire mooshroom biome age, so there would be no hostile mobs. However, the way Thaumcraft creates flat lands is it takes an average of the biomes usual height, and apparently mooshroom biomes are usually mountains, so it made it really high, leaving not a lot of room for the "mega-builds". I tried using a "mooshroom-shore" biome modifier instead, but that just made the endless ocean you see if you go there now.

I'm planning to try messing about with the agedata.dat file on a test world to see if I can trick it to do a low flatlands with land instead of ocean, when I have time.

I realise it's probably a little late to ask, but are there any vacancies in groups people are a part of on the server?

Well, the only official 'group' right now is the Mages Accords- a support infrastructure of all those who're primarily using Thaumcraft, EE and the SoulCraft mods, in preference over things like IndustrialCraft and Buildcraft. It's got a couple bylaws, but is really just for "Hey man, what's the stuff when researching this item?" or "I died over here- could you help me get my stuff back"? sort of thing. There will eventually be shared facilities, but the "Lords" are still getting their act together, and we're still building the primary tower.

What just went through my mind upon reading that:

1. Build a Soul Shard

2. Collect the souls of as many squids as possible.

3. Go to somebody's house (while that person is there (ex. Shrike)).

4. Spawn as many squids as possible.

5. Say some lame squid pun.

6. ???

7. Profit!
