Wow, that is some weak sauce right there. I put myself through university working at a Rogers Video (Canadian competitor for Blockbuster) and we at least had unlimited free rentals.

I have Netflix.

I have Netflix Canada. It's terrible.

Amen to that. Oooooh 5000 different documentaries and pre-70s movies to choose from?!?! Who wouldn't want that!

I'll take 5000 different documentaries thanks! Some of that gak is highly entertaining...

It was a bad excuse to combine strippers and scifi action. The visuals were awesome. The so-called "plot' was terrible. Whoever called it the "Virgin Wallet Grab" was dead on. I took a date to see it and immediately apologized afterwards.

Sounds like your date had no sense of whimsy.

There's really not much difference between Sucker Punch and a Perrault or Grimm fairy tale.

I never understood the aggressive hate for this movie that some people seem to have. I've seen a lot of bad movies and if anyone is seriously trying to bill this as the worst movie ever - get out more. Go watch Black Devil Doll, and then come talk to me about bad movies.

I liked it a lot, it had enjoyable action, a good soundtrack, and enough going on story wise to keep me interested. And I got a beer can hucked at my head because my friend wouldn't shut his drunken ass up. A good time all around.

It was a pretty damn awful movie. And not in the "so bad it's great" way. It just sucked.

Didn't read the thread, because I have one thing to say re: the title. Sucker Punch was horrible.

Its the Crow for the noughties generation, but not as good

Thats the be all and end all, there won't be a directorial follow up as good as Dark City. The film that did the Matrix beter than all the Matrix films. Young ones today have nothing but a turgid river of 3D slurry to fawn over

nothing thats my point. Sucker Punch is the same music orientated vibe of a film. A Film that sparks interest in stuff if you get what I mean. I can still quote the Crow from start to end after all these years, its an audio visual extravaganza. And Sucker Punck does the same thing. Looks good sounds good and has some interesting concepts on the go.

I would still urge any one who has an interest in films to watch Dark City. Its the 3 Matrix films done before the Matrix and better, and has the same oppressive darkness consuming the world feel as the Crow. If you ever played Kult the RPG Dark City is were a GM goes after Hellraiser.

Dark City IS awesome.

Still more Awesome than the matrix (both shot in some similar areas for externals).

There was just something about the way Richard O'Brien's character says "it's time" and they change the city, that sends a shiver down my spine to this day.

...Back on topic - I feel I need to point a few things out to all you sucker punch haters.

Firstly, don't watch it with the mindset of a normal 12A film. The film operates on three levels.

Level 1) The fantasy world, where Baby Doll fights demons, gets what she needs to escape, and has hope. This is what the 12A audience sees, and over the top escape-from-reality fantasy world.

Level 2) The brothel, where Baby Doll is subject to (on screen) mild abuse, and is forced to dance. This is what a 15+ audience sees, and addition to the fantasy world. A multitude of turn-ons, some fun scenes, with a touch of sadness to Baby Doll's character. When she dances, she escapes to Level 1, which shows the events of the previous few scenes, and some after, as how Baby Doll feels about it. When she is getting things like the map, the fire and the knife, she is slaying demons, defeating the bad guys, fighting for a way out. The parts of the action scenes after obtaining the item (or in the case of the knife, failing to obtain it), the bad guys are fighting back, know she is trying to escape with the item. (For example, getting chased by the mother dragon after taking the baby dragon's crystals symbolises Blue knowing what they're up to, and getting angry at them).

Level 3) The real world. This is what the mature audience was supposed to see. Everything that happened in reality was reflected in the brothel and action delusions. The brothel is how Baby Doll sees the asylum, as she and the other girls are sexually abused by the male orderlies. Where she herself is being abused, Baby Doll explains away this as just a "dance", but the trauma of this causes her to go into a deep fantasy world, where she can feel hope, she can feel as if she has some real power. This is mostly what makes the film sad.
Baby Doll knows exactly what is happening to her, but is unable to live with it, so she replaces her own horrific memories with OTT action scenes.
At the end of the film, where she gets lobotomised, we know what was really going on in her head, because she wanted to no longer exist as the person who had to go through all of that.

_______________________________

Next up is the fact that whenever a character talks to Baby Doll, it permeates through all 3 levels, causing things to become quite surreal in some places.

Also, I dare you to try to tell me this isn't a sad (yet brilliant) song:

It looks great and has a good plot with a suprisingly bleak ending and tone.

IMO Its far more clever than many movies which are proclaimed as "clever" - like the dull and predictable POS that was Inception.

I agree with your point about Dark City, but am very confused. There was only one Matrix movie. You might want to correct your post.

I paid full price opening night in the theatre, because it is a Zack Snyder movie, and I go watch all of his movies.

Then I bought the extra-fancy DVD that came in the metal case. (Though this means little in context; I own 1200+ DVDs.)

Then i re-bought the DVD with the Comic-Con version that included the soundtrack.

Oh, and to whoever figures there won't be a directorial follow-up: there already is. It's called Man of Steel and it looks like it might just make up for Bryan Singer's God-awful Lois Lane movie.

Seriously, if you want to see the worst movie ever, go watch Death Bed: The Bed That Eats. It's even worse than Manos: The Hand of Fate, and almost twice as long.

Exalted. Been thinking the same thing since reading the title of this thread.

What's also funny is it's being compared to really bad movies from the 60's and 70's, as if being better than them (and this is assuming that it even is) makes it good.
