I play Imperial Guard. I'm also a Sadist. I don't think these two have much in common, but the thought of sending 60 guys to death pretty much every game with no punishment (and it's actually encouraged in the 40k world) is a chuckling thought.

I play tyranids and a squig-themed IG. I try to conserve as many as my troops as possible. This makes me very sad as my armies don't reflect that. At all. Other times I want to sacrifice as many units as possible to kill one unit. I really have a split personality... Either way, when I play, my hormagaunts are doomed.

Guard player primarily, like most guard players I am a military history buff (and a post grad history student on the side, so I guess its a little more than just a history buff). My playstyle tends to be conservative and campy, I like blasting my opponent into submission before moving on. Note, however that I do not gravitate to sniper rifles in video games like other people have said, I prefer battle rifle style guns. in general I prefer to overkill a target rather than balance my whole strategy on one thing going well or one unit rolling exactly what i need.

All of my Armies before Chaos, were all about Order.
Necrons, Tyranids and Eldar.
Necrons are still my favorite, and I favor Order above all else.
Chaos is a little bit out of left field, but I like the Idea of a Warp Invasion of Daemons and Chaos Space Marines, beings that have been warped from their original Ideas, and now are unfettered in their pursuits.

Heheh, especially the stubborn part seems to be true for Dark Angels players.
Me, I prefer swarm tactics and horde armies. Main army is guard, I've got Skavens, Orks, and managed to make a pretty swarmy Chaos list. Odd man out is Grey Knights, an army I find difficult to play

Long time browser, first time poster. Couldn't resist with a topic like this. I tend to prefer surprise and terror tactics .. My armies include (my personal favorite first) Necrons that often include two units of DeathMarks, Wraiths + DLord and a lovable mass of chittering bugs. Scarabs and spiders. Just love the feel of surprise snipers combined with wraiths and a nasty lord while bogging armies down in endless tides of armour eating robotic bugs. Used to use FO's before when their rules matched up with Pariahs, but now... ... no more FO's.
Next two armies are sort of tie, CSM Nightlords Legion which has been shelved for quite awhile and a Lictor heavy Tyranid army.... still trying to figure out how to make that one work.
Oh, almost forgot... got to love the feel of an army that just keeps getting back up, THERE IS NO HOPE!

I've took some time to think over this, and I actually think you may be right. I have a pattern, across all the games I play, of going into games with the idea that, the best way to win (Combat games), is to be the one who survives, not the one who puts out the most killing, but the one who can take all the enemy throws at them, and still wade on through.
For MMO's, I was always playing tanks. For RPG's, I always go for resillient beatsticks over spellcasters and such. Same for Roleplaying.
And I guess that mentality, is why I chose nurgle, when I started out playing daemons in the first place. Rather than going for what was "Good" at the time I started, I went for the resillient army, with the unusual way to kill the enemy (Epidemius buildup).
So yeah, this seems to fit my persona across all games I play.

I thinks it's a combination of our real life psyches and of our fantasies and what we want to play. Howeve this may lean more towards one then the other.
For smaller my fort and favorite army is nids. I love the idea of something just to alien to understand (bit too much lovecraft) and using overwhelming numbers. I enjoy close combat much more then range so when I started I had, and still do, massive numbers of hormoguants. Nothing better then a full unit of thity giving over 90 attacks on the charge. I know this mentality is illogical and that it makes more sense to shoot eveything down before it can get in range but I just enjoy the feeling of beating other armies right in their face.
This can also apply to real life as I do a lot with boffers. I use short handled axes and work much better closer to someone then the fencers who have the long swords. This can also apply to my second army, khorne chaos. I do a lot of work making boffers for people. My khorne army is all about close combat again but they heavily convert all their weapons and vehicles. I'm also not too hi of a fan of conformity. So my khorne army is corrupted sob.

Well I read a very interesting article recently that explored this and studies show that when selecting what breed of dog a person gets they will subliminally select one that they feel is a reflection of thier own personality and or appearance. ..
This article got me thinking about why we play certain armies, I know some competitive people will select exclusively based on the rules but for the most part I think people will select an army that they feel reflects their personality. I know for me this is probably accurate as I play khorne CSM / CD, with a big emphasis on psycho monsterous creatures.... a reflection of my short temper and monsterous ego.... on the other end of the scale my friend who is currently in the military and his career goal is to be a cop, plays imperial guard.
Does anybody see the connection? Have a think about what army you play and what that could say about your personality.... I would love to hear other examples and peoples opinions on this matter.
Note. This is just a theory, ork players im NOT saying you too have an IQ of 6
Awww but i do have an IQ score of 6 when playing orks. i get in theme of the army's mentality i am playing at that time. if i were to play Cron i'd be a heartless and soul-less killing machine much like the terminator.
when i play Nid, i like to make starcraft Zerg vox sounds and "for the brood and for the hivemind" and am generally more thoughtful and generally tend to eat more food.
sometimes though i just play 40k without rhyme or reason beside the fact it is fun and because i can. Automatically Appended Next Post: OT but big Up to your handle OP Juggalo17. here have a bottle of faygo on the house
