I am wondering how those of us in Australia feel about being forced to buy from GW Australia which charge double the price of US/EU under the new GW policies. There will be no more online sales of GW products apart from GW's own website. Retailers other then Gw itself will no longer be able to ship to AUS. I will be buying as little as possible from GW as paying double the rest of the world is absurd. It can cost anywhere up to 74 dollars for a pack of 5 units...

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be whole lot that we can do. I tend to buy the majority of my figures from my local independent retailer but they usually price match GW on everything so it's just as expensive. The only real alternative is to order from overseas independents and pay high shipping prices which negate any gains.
I hate to say it but I think we're just going to have to deal with it.

Forced? No, And that's why I'm buying from "Other" Places on the net. I cant justify Wolf Guard Termis for $87Nzd when I can get them for $25NZd Delivered. still have to buy Original Codex's from GW or wait a few months and the price drops on Auction sites. But "forced" only if I cant wait for the new stuff to be "ready for Purchase" a month or 2 after Gw.

Get a person on dakka to ship you stuff, there is lots of ways to get around the embargo.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

I just confirmed that some places are not effected by the new rules so if you look hard enough there are still options out there.

Honestly, I've always had the opinion of shop where you play.

If you game at a GW store, buy your stuff there. If you play at an independant, buy your stuff there. Yes, it's expensive here, but buying from overseas and playing in the store won't keep its doors open. If you play at home, then hey, go nuts.

Personally, with one exception (that being Warhammer Fantasy), I've always bought my wargaming stuff locally. Fantasy I bought some from the UK before the embargo, but since then, I've bought locally. Mostly because I buy in bits and peices, a box here and a box there, and when I only order one box, the savings after paying shipping are almost non-existant.

Go FW and just buy their guardsmen or space marines and just use the codex rules for them, they'll be expensive but cheaper(and better) then GW's regular offerings and they still ship to Australia!

Does NZ count?

I play Orks, and between AoBR and scratch builds I literally haven't bought anything but paint from GW since I got some Blood Angels stuff as a kid over a decade ago

Doesn't matter how high the minimum wage is, when you have to work for a day in exchange for one Ghazghull figure thats just too much

Yep. When the every day average Australian packs it in for the day from our hours of gold mining, we hop in our gold plated Ferraris and drive home to our multi storey mansions to discuss the greater things in life, like 40k, over 50 year old scotch and Dodo egg soufflé.

Seriously, the minimum wage thing is getting old. It's not the only contributing factor to someones wealth, and you know it.

Budgeting for war gaming is going to be difficult for anyone, anywhere even if they are working full time and have no dependents. It's not the most expensive hobby, but it's far from the cheapest.

Most of the player I know deal with it by NOT getting it on release.
Wait 3 months until the next new army release and the previous one usually floods the 2nd hand market. That's how I got some Swordmasters, white lions, a couple of chariots and some bolt throwers for my HE.

OTOH, certain fantasy builds are easier. Empire/Brettonians can be done with historicals in 28mm if you need to get new stuff and can go without GWs cartoon lasercannon horsecarts.

I'd "shop where I play" but where I play ISN'T a shop, but one of two clubs with venues hired specifically for that purpose.
The local GW isn't big enough to skin a cat in (and smells like someone has) - and although I do support the FLGS, I've been playing in non-store based clubs for most of my gaming life, and to me, playing in a shop just feels wrong.
We have beer, mandollies and a quite satisfying lack of card players, though - and due to the venue rules, an also satisfying lack of younger players (under 18s).
For a while, one of these clubs was looked upon as little more than the local creche - it was taken over by the mother of one of the kids when the existing guy left due to declining health.
We've brought it back to a grown-up atmosphere, where the former members are welcome back if they choose to return (the younger players have mostly left gaming behind and moved onto other things).

I am working full time and make a decent wage but when I go to GW and see 5 plastic guys for 70 plus dollars I feel a little upset. Saying "dont Aussies have a high minimum wage" is as educated as saying dont us citizens all drive escalades and live in massive homes with picket fences tree swings and swimming pools with soccer moms who drive them to their local store and pay for their half price minis. The point is the pricing is absurd I have entered the hobby much later In life because quite frankly the price in aus for gw product has always been absurd and now that I am older with full time.work I can afford.... The EU/US priced minis from gw. The Australian price is far to inflated its beyond a joke.

I think the GW price increases are reaching the point where a lot of people will have to decide whether they want to continue with 40k. In the case of Australia I know my answer would certainly be "no".
I think because AUS is not a huge market like the UK or US then GW is fine letting a group of their players suffer.
Lots of other, cheaper systems out there, so hopefully people will keep voting with their dollars and migrating away from GW and their horrible business practices.

Find a new friend in one of the cheaper countries (I'm in the US and have found that my Aussie friends tend to buy me beer) and have them buy it and ship it to you. With all of the easy ways of sending money on the internet now, I can't imagine it would be that hard and then they get to support their FLGS and you get cheaper stuff.

Well I know you guys don't want to say what the minimum wage is but in Canada (at least in Ontario) it's $10.25/hour.

For people who only make minimum wage here that's like 11 hours of work to pay for a single riptide... Kind of absurd In my opinion.

It's still expensive in Canada for stuff as well even though we are so close to the states which doesn't make much sense to me.

One reason I ask is because there is lots of support to raise our minimum wage. If things are expensive in Australia because its Australia, its a different issue. Are your basic economic markers (food, gas, durable goods) priced at double US prices?

This has become much more common in Australia. Also a noticeable trend away from GW products.

Pretty much. For example, we pay ~$1.40 per litre of petrol (so nearly $5us per gallon thanks to our dollars being so close these days). Another point is housing - in an area outside of the city with an hour long, or more, commute, rent is roughly ~$300 per week, and utilities roughly ~$400 per quarter. Got a mortgage? Add about 70% to that rent, and about 50% to those utilities (mostly to cover local council rate payments).

Minimum wage is high in Australia, but you can't realistically live on it, since cost of living is so much higher and minimum wage hasn't increased proportionally with inflation (neither have most wages, honestly).

Can't buy from ebay, the shipping kills the value.

I only buy second hand (preferably unassembled) because you just can't get a reasonable deal otherwise.

Although I am just about to move to Europe, and experience the joys of Wayland Games et al

Look at somewhere like Dicebucket. Those are brand new, just stripped from the box before sending to you (thus classed as second hand so they can use a shopping cart).
