So I have always wondered why the main tank of the IG is named after Leman Russ, and what did the IG use before they had that tank?
The lexicanum articles don't seem to cover it.

Land Raiders back in the day.
Codex Astartes: Land Raider
At that time, the Land Raider was used by almost every human force, including the Space Marines and the Imperial army. There was not a battlefield in the first two hundred years of the Imperium that had not tested the mettle of this awesome war engine.
With the Warmaster's forces threatening to overrun Terra, the Emperor decreed that all Land Raiders still in loyalist service were to be recalled for exclusive use by the Legionnes Astartes, who were at the forefront of the fighting.

The Baneblade was classified as a "Light battle tank" by the STC when they found it.
Let me emphasize that, the Baneblade was a light battle tank to DAOT humanity.

The Land Raider is no slouch in the variants department.
Although the baneblade takes the cake in sheer number of unimaginatively named variants.

the LRBT puts it to shame. Although yeah, the Baneblade does have a stupid amount. Also it makes no sense that the Baneblade is a light tank. It's not maneuverable enough. GW's fluff gets stupid at times.

Maybe the standard tank of the DAOT was a straight up Bolo?

The malcador predates the LRBT, iirc
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Malcador_(Heavy_Tank)#.UcCFfPlkPkc
Where does it say that Baneblades were considered a light tank?
There is no mention of that in Lexicanum
http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Baneblade#.UcCFn_lkPkc
All it says that entire divisions served the Emperor during the great crusade. It did not say they were "light," nor does it say they were the standard battle tank.
They certainly predated the LRBT though.

Given that the IG didn't exist till after the Heresy, the IG have always used the LRBT.
The Imperial Army used Land Raiders(till they were requisitioned for the Legions), Malcadors, Predators, Baneblades, and likely other less known variants of vehicle.
Then the Lemun Russ design was found and other tanks were dropped for a more standardized design.

I always assumed this was due to the inability of the Imperium to equip the Baneblade with a reactor/engine/drive-train of sufficient capabilities, due to the decline in knowledge. Exactly like the Macharius

Given the complete lack of any tank bigger than the baneblade chassis, I'd say that light designation is bogus. What is the chance of something that big getting completely lost with no trace anywhere? Not even legends of a tank the size of a mountain.

Ai, there's no mention of it being a light tank of any source I could find. Maybe C.S Goto said it was a light tank... Well, 1d4chan says it was a light tank, and we all now how that's a reputable source.

Except that things that big still exist into the 41st Millenium, the most obvious of which are the Clan-Cities on Medusa, which are huge tracked cities that move around to avoid geological upheval.
And things that big aren't completely lost - Leviathans and Capitol Imperialises may incorporate STC fragments of DAoT super tanks in their design.

Leviathans, Capitol Imperiali and the Clan-Cities are bigger yes, but when have they ever been classed as tanks?

No, they are not. The Clan-Cities are, well, cities. They are not meant for war.
Leviathans (aka Capitol Imperialii) is a command vehicle; you do not want it serving the roles of a tank. That would be like using a King as a Knight.
It's a heavily armed and armored command vehicle, but that's more for defensive reasons than offensive.

Technically a correct statement, it should be noted however that it was only the previous codex that allowed them to do it. Its not a long tradition dating back to RT.
