So I've decided to get a necron army, and I've tried to look for posts on the tactics and army list boards for advice, but I see almost no posts about the necrons.. Does anyone know why that is?

The key to strategy is not to choose a path to victory, but to choose so that all paths lead to a victory.

War is beautiful because it establishes man’s dominion over the subjugated machinery by means of gas masks, terrifying megaphones, flame throwers, and small tanks. War is beautiful because it initiates the dreamt-of metalization of the human body. War is beautiful because it enriches a flowering meadow with the fiery orchids of machine guns. War is beautiful because it combines the gunfire, the cannonades, the cease-fire, the scents, and the stench of putrefaction into a symphony.

Maybe you should post this in the Tactic-section?
I think you'd have more luck over there.

since i really haven't played necs since 6th and the flying croissant brigade came into power, i have no problem telling you how i used to enjoy playing my shiny bots 'o' doom.

I'd basically load up max'd out squads of warriors with as many deep striking crypteks as i could manage. idea being i just materialize in front, unload and then poof out of range. quite a lot of fun. Then i'd throw in fast stuff, scarabs/destroyers and usually a few spyders with the main advance.

I suspect this type of army would get owned these days but am damn curious. Most of the necron line is pretty versatile and can do its job very well.

Huuuuge props go to the ghost ark, warriors and immortals, flyers (duh), wraiths and annihilation barges. Oh, and always remember necrons are likely going to be top heavy in the HQ slot point wise.

hope this helps

How about 6 Wraiths backed up by a Destroyer Lord with a War Scyth and C'tan for some nice CC? I havn't seen them fall down too often and they do a nice job tying up or destroying tough units.

There's not a lot of discussion because the list has been hammered out....the book is done and figured out to the nth degree.

Destroyer lord, warscythe, MSS, maybe a few other toys
6 wraiths, 2 coils
3x5 warriors, in nightscythe
3 annihilation barges

After that, you can repeat the wraith squad and get another warrior squad, or branch out into allies. Chaos cultists and a helldrake is popular at the moment.

That's it really, everything else in the book is basically inferior to just taking more of the above list.

Agreed, though I love my 'crons, I have been playing with them less and less because of their mono-dimensional nature.

Look in the battle reports section maybe. An army is only as mono-dimensional as the commander. You are not forced to bring nightsythes. Necrons have a solid array good units in their army, and a few units that are extremely good. People tend to focus the spam lists and overlook the traditional ones.

Well, there weren't very many necron players before their current codex came out, so you didn't have a dedicated fan base who was willing to experiment with the codex when it came out. Instead, you got a tidal wave of new necron players that didn't know what they were doing all going back and forth asking each other what "the" necron list was without enough veteran necron players to help sort things out.

As such, the necron community imploded into a black hole of groupthink pretty quickly. There's not much point in striking up a conversation if it's either an echo chamber, of if you're immediately struck down for heterodoxical thinking.

Give it enough time, and you'll start to lose that giant influx of players as they slowly move on to newer codices. Once the necron codex gets a little bit older, and you can't auto-win with "the" necron list anymore, then even more people will shed off, leaving people who are more likely to try and make things work. At that point, you'll have more serious discussion.

Got it. I had heard the wraith wing mono build had a large following, but I didn't realize the conversation had been totally undermined by that list. Maybe I will go to the army list section and try to restart the conversation.

You'll do better in tactics.

And by "better" I mean "get shouted at because you dared question conventional wisdom".

Which is why I pointed you at Necrontyr Online, since the guys and girls there are actually open to new ideas (except one guy), they're just rather... insular.

I've actually been playing Necrons on and off since they first came out late in 2nd ed, back when they turned off power weapons and froze armour

While there is a lot of groupthink going on, there are plenty of viable builds out there, and with the rise of the Tau, the flyerspam lists, in my opinion have had their day.
Still powerful, to be sure, but too risky for tournament where you have no control over your match ups.
Immortals are still good, Tesla is very powerful.
Annihilation Barges are always worth taking, if only for their anti air capabilities.
I've had great success with Tomb Blades and Destroyers in place of Wraiths.
Don't let your thinking be swayed by the netlists, try stuff out, come to your own conclusion.

If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it.

Personally I run a list with 3x3 Tomb Spyders, 1x6 Wraiths, 2x10 Scarabs, 2x10 Immortals, Zahndrek, Anrakyr and Obyron with two DespiTeks for mobility in the Immortal squads.

It's fun. It consumes mech lists in a handful of turns, what with basically unlimited scarabs, and what the scarabs don't eat and Anrakyr doesn't hijack, the Immortals, Wraiths and Obyron slaughter.

Spam Wraiths, spam Flyers, spam AB, faceroll everyone except IG and maybe Tau.

The Necron codex got a lot of good units, the only thing you need to clearly stay away from are Monoliths, all SC but Zandrekh, Flayed Ones, Triarch Stalkers, LG / TP, the Crap'Tan and the Doomsday Ark.

Focus on the rest, get a good balance in and you got a good list going.

That is nonsense!

Monoliths can be fun and they are quite good.
Most SC are good.
Triarch Stalkers see lots of play.
LG/TP are played more than enough and can be devastating.
C'Tans are awesome models to field and Doomsday Arks can bring destruction on almost anything.
Hell, even Flayed Ones can be effective in a match.

Just because it's not a "free win at tournament"-unit doesn't mean you 'need to clearly stay away' from it.

I was with Kangodo until flayed ones. They can do one thing: die.

Maybe if they still had special rules, or at least caused Fear, they might be vaguely usable but as it is they stand around, get shot, charge, get shot, get punched, and if there's anything left get to attack a couple of times with S4 AP-.

Well, they are a melee-unit with no special rules in the elite slot in a ranged-army.

It's my fault, for a minute I had them confused with the IA12-version of the Flayed Ones.

Talking of, I've had Fall of Orpheus on my shelf for a week now and not had time to look at it.

I'll be in my bunk.

Read it. It is full of things that should be added to the necron codex. Like, now. Especially the warlord table, which should be given to the crons in an errata. Because I'm fething annoyed that everyone else is getting their own traits, and it'll be 10 years before necrons get it.

Probably only three or so given GW's new codex writing pace.

Notice how badly the Necrons spanked the Imperium in space.

If you've ever played BFG, that isn't far off the mark from how they play in the tabletop.

Fall of Orpheus has some great stuff in it. Nothing OP from wehat I saw for Necrons. Just nice diversification and yeah the warlord traits.

Do you have to use Warlord traits with the Dark Harvest list?

If so, do you have to play as the Maynark dynasty?

You can only use the Warlord table if you play a Dark Harvest list.

It is a really awesome Table though, with every trait being useful.
