Hey everyone, I figured that since the new 'nilla marine codex is coming out next month (along with finding some minis I hadn't assembled yet), that it was the perfect time to introduce my girlfriend to the game. I showed her some marine chapters, and she picked the Storm Wardens. So far, the only minis that I have for the army are a tax squad and a venerable dread, though. Here's a pic so far:
They're not 100% finished, but close. Right now though, I'm trying to figure out what would make a good 500-750 point force to help her learn the game. Right now, I'm thinking a captain (obviously), and another tac squad. I'll probably get a rhino or something, and after that I'm not sure. I want to keep the army's focus on heavy support, but I'm open to anything.
Thanks,
B

I would say a TFC would compliment that all nicely and would fit what you're trying to accomplish.
Totaling it all up in my head, that's pretty close to 800 points and is a balanced shooty army. Just give the two tac squads the free upgrades, then maybe a razorback instead of a rhino to give her an idea of how a shooty vehicle works.

Mine is generally interested in it (she thinks its amazing that I can paint something that small), and wants something we can do together. But yeah, it's kind of odd she hates the gaming aspect but loves painting.

Straight silver doesn't look bad. I mean, look at the Iron Warriors. They're silver with gold trim.

I know silver looks good. My Tau are mixed silver, grey, black, and blue. I also run some Iron warriors CSM because I liked the silver and gold look.

I'm just speaking from personal experience.
My ex bought a Corpse Cart. First model she ever painted... and she started with silver... no basecoat or primer or nothin'.
My friends GF asked to paint one of his Chaos Spawn. First thing she did was paint the head silver.
My sister painted a Skeleton... silver. First time I walked into Dakka Dakka Nichole was painting stuff on a tank... silver.

Women don't like the gaming side because they're averse to the logical ruleset that neccesetates it. They like the painting because they tend to regard it as more creative and skilled, more akin to art than a nerdy hobby.
If you want to teach her the rules, i suggest doing it very simply, demonstrating game mechanics one at a time. Dont overwealm her with special rules and exceptions from the outset.

1st I'm seriously not being sexist
2nd Women are much more emotionally sensitive than men, it effects their logic and perspective. Men on the other hand tend to be more analytical and cause/effect based thinkers which also effects their perspective and opinions. This is not to say one gender is better or worse, right or wrong. It does however tend to make men and women predisposed to enjoy different types of activities. So I don’t think it's at all false or idiotic to say women don’t like the hobby due to its "logical" or methodical nature. My ex-wife and her girlfriends preferred to scrapbook than play warhammer for a reason.

Spartak, I'm going to be a little blunt, but hopefully not insulting. I want to persuade you, not beat you down. To start this off, never start a statement by saying you're not sexist; it immediately means you're going to say something sexist. Though it isn't like "women don't deserve basic rights" or something equally horrible, it is still sexist. I don't find women to be more emotionally sensitive than men. Yes I tease my wife and close friends about it, but in reality I find them to be just as emotional as men. Thing is, the men I find that are emotional everyone points out that "it's about their pride" or something like that. Pride is an emotion, and one of the worst because if anything is going to impair your ability to make a logical decision that will do it. Yes men and women are different, but it's really pretty superficial. The reason why more men tend to play warhammer or many other games is because of the boy's club mentality attached to it. There's no dodging it, it's impossible to miss once you take a step back and look. Hopefully that all makes sense, and if you'd like to I'm more than willing to continue debating through a PM or on this thread so long as we both keep an open mind and actually debate.

@ rabid1903: I'm not insulted I just don't agree. I think your previous comment telling another poster they were an idiot was insulting but I'll let that person defend themself. I am also willing to debate but let's leave it off of this thread going forward, I don't want to further hijack the thread.
@ the OP: I think many of the above ideas have merit, personally I would start with the fluff maybe some of the better HH novels? My girlfriend really enjoyed the starting trilogy, she cried several times and now has this passionate hatred for Abbadon lol. You mentioned that she has already played some table top tho so she may need far less motivation than most of the women I know. I've found that just being interested and open about a hobby regardless of its content (wargameing/video games/shooting guns) is enough to pique someone's interest. My ex-wife though wow was "that game for virgins", two months later she was playing more than I ever did. As far as the rules complexity goes a slow introduction to the game mechanics, presenting one thing at a time in a simple manner is a good suggestion for teaching anyone, gender is not an issue but again this may not even be a concern seeing as she has played other wargames.
PS I like the paintjob btw

All people are different including girls.. Just because you've only met emotional women doesn't mean all girls are like that... This goes with everyone..
And that's a pretty shallow and derogatory statement to make in today's society..
To answer the OP, start them off by letting them play how they want... This goes for all new players,
It's tempting to say "you don't want X because it will get crushed by Y or Z is better..."
Instead of list building with them play a very small game 300-500pts.. And tailor your lists accordingly, if they want fluff, have it go against ur fluff.. (No pun intended)
My group have enjoyed ourselves a lot since my brother and I have gotten our GF's into the hobby.. We have since learnt to enjoy fluff over WAAC/ TAC lists, and have thus learnt a valuably lesson from women in the hobby..
PS- my bros Fiancée is probably the most hardcore unemotional women I've met (ER surgical head nurse)... She's seen and dealt with things that would leave you bawlig your eyes out so nuts to your "all women are emotional" 'theory' such as it was!

You used your ex's behaviour as an example of why all women prefer activites that don't require logic. And I'm the troll? OOOOKAY.
My ex girlfriend loved the idea of wargaming, the only thing preventing her from getting into it was the cost (we were students) so what kind of sweeping statements should we extrapolate from that?

How to deal with women I the hobby;
Don't treat them any differently...
Aw hell guys that's how to treat women in general..
Here I Brisbane women in the hobby have gone from less than 1 in 10 when I was young to about 1 in 6.. That's a pretty big leap in 15 years.. This may be a society thing.. Gender amongst nerds here is pretty much 50-50 at supernova (our comicon) so of course they are going to find out about wargaming that way...
That's probably because as a rule women aren't treated differently either way by the industry.. Automatically Appended Next Post: Whereas if the first thing they hear when walking into a GW is accusations they aren't "geared" towards logic and thus don't understand the rules as well as males..
Well.. What more can I say to that..

OP: If you want to avoid the devolution into a sexism debate, rather than 'girlfriend', try saying 'partner'. Sure, some people will think you're gay - but at least they won't derail the thread talking about irrelevant things like "girls like scrap-booking".
Since it seems like she's a veteran gamer, I'm not sure she needs all that much help with picking an army... of course, if you're buying it for her as gifts, you should probably base your choices off knowledge of how she likes to play under other systems.
Edit: Almost forgot. Nobody can remember who the Storm Wardens are descended from because they sealed their records away along with their First Company. You should look in the FFG Deathwatch books if you want more info on them.
