(CNN) -- A 3-year-old child and 11 adults were hit by gunfire in a park on the South Side of Chicago late Thursday night, police said.
All the victims were alive when transported to various hospitals, deputy fire chief James Mungovan said.
CNN affiliate WLS-TV reported four of the victims were in critical condition.
The shooting was reported about 10:15 p.m. in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Police had taped off an outdoor basketball court there.
No suspects were in custody late Thursday. A police spokesman said investigators believe the shooting was gang-related.
Gun violence in Chicago was spotlighted in a February speech there by President Obama. The president, whose home is in Chicago, spoke about the shooting death of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton just a week after she took part in his inauguration ceremony in January.
The FBI's annual crime report this week showed Chicago had 500 homicides in 2012, up from 431 in 2011 and more than any other American city. Chicago officials have said homicides this year are below the 2012 pace.

I know it's slightly off topic, but it came up in this article. I'm not in the rabid pro- or anti-Obama camps, but I find it really irritating when people refer to Illinois as his homestate. It isn't. He was neither born nor raised here. He took a home in Chicago for the briefest period of times in order to capitalize on an almost guaranteed group of Democrat voters. I'm not throwing rocks. It's a viable, and even cunning, tactic for political election. But he isn't from Illinois. He has zero real investment in this state, and has never represented the interests of the state more than was required to meet the bare-bones demands of his Senate constituency.

It's not a political thing, it's just an accuracy thing. He's not really an Illinoisan. I don't know why that bugs me so much, it just does.

It's a fair rap - it always bugged me when Hillary was said to be from New York.

Illinois is his home state. It's what he claims as home, not Hawaii. I've spent more time living in other states then Michigan, but that's still my home state. It's what you claim as home.

Unless of course, a person views him as being corrupt, then he most definitely is an Illinoisan

Ohh.. and, dont those criminals who did this know that there are laws against this sort of thing?? Anti-gun laws were sure in great effect there

Yep, but this one only be a blip. We've already moved away from the OP.
Its Chicago
It happens all the time
It doesn't fit an agenda
Its just "those people"

Until we have marches protesting the bloodbath occurring in LA, Chicago, Oakland, and many other inner cities - the real racism of this country, this won't get better. It makes a man with children weep.

I'll never forget my first weekend in LA. They had 18 murders in one weekend. I went "wo"

Pop into a Walmart at 10-11pm, you'll see a ton of young kids in there.

I don't want to make any negative leaps, but it's possible that given shifts people work and stuff, it's the only time they can spend with their kids. I'd say time spent with a 3 year old at 10pm at night is better then no time spent at all.

Bull crap. Having your 3 year old kid at a basketball court filled with adults that late at night isn't indicative of good parenting. If that time of night is the only time you can spend with your kid, play chutes and ladders or something at the house. This particular case reeks of Baby Mama not wanting to give up social life. Shooting was VERY likely gang related. Hanging out with your 3 year old kid at 10:15PM with a bunch of gang bangers is not indicative of good parenting. Break out of that mindset and culture and incidents like this are a lot less likely to occur.

1. You're right on all counts.
2. Of courseits gang related.
3. 13 people are still shot. Thats the problem. We excuse it because its "gang related."

Just like breaking out of the mindset that the free availability of firearms is a god given right would also mean that incidents like this would happen a lot less often?

10:1 odds the firearms used were illegally obtained, making all said arguments of this sort useless.

Unless the used firearms were stolen directly from a manufacturer, that argument makes no sense.

More legal guns in circulation means that there are also more illegal guns in circulation.

Except, you know, that statistics support the notion that areas with the strictest gun laws have the most gun crime. Take away the means of protection from law abiding citizens and only the criminals have the guns.

It is not free availability. There are background checks in place that are supposed to prevent those with mental health issues, criminal records, etc. obtaining them - as well as the process of obtaining a license.
Also the overwhelming majority of legal gun owners enjoy their firearms without posing a risk to others, and without having any malicious intent. Why should we punish those who obey the law?

It has not been covered yet but I am waiting to see whether the firearms used in the above incident were legally held or not. Given that Chicago has some of the most stringent gun controls in the US, and the gang undertones, my bet is that these were not legally obtained firearms.

I doubt they were even obtained in the state of Illinois in general. Gun trafficing is a thing kids especially in a crime ridden cess pool like Chicago.

That's if they are ever found. I'm thinking the Chicago PD moves on after a week or so to more current similar incidents.

Its trivially easy to provoke all kinds of wild overractions in threads involving the control of firearms.

Classic Dakka. Blame the Victim!

I know when my daughter was before school age, I worked Mid-shifts and my wife was self-employed and worked odd hours too. My daughter had no reason to wake up early, so she tended to stay up rather late, and sleep in the next day. Just like my wife and I did. There were many times we were out as a family around 10:15 PM.
