Which boxed set do you think is really good value or has the best selection of bits?
I personally like the new sternguard box. It has lots of nice bits.

The Dreamforge Stormtrooper accessory kit is amazing, usable for 28mm (non-heroic) scale humies so works great for DKK etc. Look at that selection of gubbins, heads, arms, weapons... even alternate hand signals. I wish GW would do similar kits for their ranges. Three different sprues packed to the brim: For GW kits, the new SM ones look pretty damn good. Specifically the Sternguard, Vanguard and Tacs. The centurions are the only GW kit to come with all wargear options supposedly.

The new tac squad kit it pretty good, and far better than the (still awesome) older one. That said, in terms of sheer customisability and variation potential, it has to be:
5: GK (PA or TDA kits)
4: DA Deathwing Termies
3: Death Company
2: Sternguard Veterans (from what I've seen, I don't actually own these)
1: Space wolf PA - Possibly the most variable and extensive kit I have ever built, and great value in terms of extra bits.

I've really enjoyed all the new plastic kits - the sprues are packed with bits options. The grey knights terminator box was a real pleasure to work with, allowing multiple poses, shoulders, weapons, and heads. The new Tau broadsides are also quite nice although they require a bit of cutting/minor greenstuff to add some unique leg poses.
The kit I hate the most from my recent projects has been the Tau firewarriors. You get a relatively large infantry box and open it up to find massive blank spaces in the sprues and just enough pieces to build 12 firewarriors. You get (going by memory): a few extra grenades, 1-2 bare heads, a few random arms, and 12-14 left over rifles (depending on if you chose to equip pulse rifles or carbines). The box size could easily be cut in half if they made a more modern/efficient sprue.
Edit: forget to mention that firewarriors also have the most horrendous mold lines which run the full length of the legs through the spaced armour plating and waves of the cloth on their pants.

My personal favorits.
- GK Paladin set, so many variations and general opinions!
- Carnifex set, just because aasembeling and painting these kits are ajoy in it self
- Grey Hunter set : because the option to buil such a varied amount of SW from one kit is amazing

I agree with paradigm on the new tac squad. Just started putting mine together this week and was really impressed by both the options and smoothness of the molds.

Every new Space Marine infantry kit in the last 3 years has been pretty fantastic, but the new Sternguard has been the one I've loved most. A wonderful array of guns, my favorite Power Fist to date, and the sheathed power sword is great. The others in my top 3 are the Deathwing and Raptors/Warp Talons, though my bias is heavily towards kits that offer excellent magnetization setup, especially for wrist mounts. And on that note, I hate the Centurions for making it less than convenient to do and use.

It seems most of the Space Marine non-vanilla Boxes are pretty good.
Space Wolves: A hell lot of stuff (including Lightning Claws, Storm Bolter, Scouts stuff ...)
Space Wolves Terminator: Assault and Standard Terminator box combined
They are how vanilla Marine boxes should be.
Also very good are Death Company, Grey Knights (Terminators), Dark Angels Upgrade Kit (incorporates also robed Marines, doesn't make any sense to buy the Dark Angels Marine box!?)
The new Tactical, Sternguard, Vanguard kits are also very good.
Don't have much knowledge of other races though.

The new infantry kits are quite amazing, with all the options in there.
From the tau pathfinder kit, to the new marine sternguard and tac squad to heck, even the GK kits (as mentioned by others) were just filled with tons of great optional parts.
As far as "value" ouch....um...not many of those.
Maybe dark vengeance, if you want da or chaos.
Some recent kits did actually get cheaper, (the new crisis box set, the new necron destroyer) per model, but overall....hmmmm thats a hard call.

Dito. I've used such boxes for my Assault Marines (with and without jump packs) as well.

The Daemon Burning Chariot box is a really good deal for what you get. Two heralds either on foot or discs, 2 screamers, and a ton of tzeentch bits. Just don't bother using it as an actual burning chariot.

I really like the new Raptor/Warp Talon box. Plenty of cool bits, heads, arms, etc. Although I do like the old metal jump packs better. I've heard really great things about the new SM kits, haven't gotten a chance to pick one up yet though.

Buy a box for 50 bucks, then buy a set of backs, legs, and terminator crux shoulder pads on ebay for 15 bucks, you just got 10 terminators for 65 bucks.

I really enjoy the plastic Ork Nobz set, since it covers practically all the bases with the plethora of power-klaws, kombi-weapons, bosspoles and even extra gubbins in terms of saws/cybork heads to make painboyz. They're also great for replacing the comparatively puny sized Nobz in the Ork Boyz set to properly show the size discrepancy, plus they're a great base to work on in converting your own Big Meks and Weirdboyz.

Yeah, I'd agree that the nob box is pretty great. It's more like a giant pile of orks upgrades sprues than anything else.
I'd also have to put in a vote for the ork battle box. With a bit of ingenuity, or some spare cash for bitz, you can make pretty much anything in the ork army with that kit. That trukk and those boys can easily become a squad of lootaz in a battlewaggon, and those biker boyz can easily become deff koptaz, while the boyz become burnaz or commandoz, or whatever.
Well... easily in the scope of you're already an ork player and like plasticard. But still, the fact that you get the base model for so much, and then such a huge pile of extra bitz on top. There's a lot to like. And that's before you consider the discount you get from it being a battle force.

I agree with the Cadian command squad and chaos raptors/warptalons. But one of the boxes that has bugged me the most are the chaos terminators. Not nearly enough bits to give them anything resembling a good loadout. Only two combi weapons....come on!

The worst value box must be the SM Bike. I mean $10 for a single rather sparse sprue with zero extra options. Just a plain old bike. This kit totally needs a revamp imo.
Space Wolves box is one of the best that I have used. So many extra bits to make your puppies original. The new Sternguard box looks rich in extras as well, but the price is rather high.
