If value for money is of concern for you, no. If you want something that fixes some of what was intentionally bad with the $50 codex, sure.

I'd recommend getting the supplement. The background is pretty great with tons of orky humor and the detachments are great if you're looking for alternate playstyles with your army. I think it's worth the price.

NO.
The pseudo bright side is that it comes with new missions (one can only be played with a tyranid friend mind you) that you can play with your buddies if they're down. Don't expect to play them in pickup games at the local shop though.

Depends if your group allows formations/detachments other than CAD.
It adds a bunch of alternate relics(read you cant take the ones in the main ork book for a detachment that takes them from here) a new detachment, and a bunch of formations.
From non rules, it has a lot of old background+some new background.
the detachment lets you get extra Elites and troops over a standard CAD, you can reroll the the warlord trait from waagh ghazkull warlord traits, and theres a chance any of your non flyer units can teleport(deepstrike) but you have to roll for it.
The formations:
Council of waagh- Ghaz/grot + 2 warbosses a big mek and nobz, get a bunch of special rules and form 1 unit, gives ghaz bonus warlord traits
Bullyboyz- 3 units of meganobz, get some bonus special rules
Vulcha skwad- Zagstruk, 3 units of stomboyz, all form together into 1 unit. get some special rules
Blitz brigade- 5 battlewagons, gain scout+some special rules
Dread mob- big mek, painboy, 2 gorka/morkanauts, 3 deff dreads, 3 units of kill kans get some special rules
Snikrots kommandos- snikrot, 4 units of kommandos all come in at once with 1 roll, get some special rules
greentide- 1 warboss 10 units of boys that all form 1 big unit, get some special rules.
one of the interesting things about the formations that form a super unit, is other than being friggin 'uge and hard to destroy they are only worth victory points if the whole thing is wiped out not just part of the subunits.
I like the supplement a lot, even though I was hoping it would be a blood axe supplement

It's got some cool new formations, traits, relics, and some neat missions to boot. There's also tons of cool fluff and some good artwork in there. I paged through it at my buddy's place and if there was an equivalent book for any of the myriad armies I play, I'd grab it. It's pretty nice.

Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.

I think it's worth getting (wish the price was a bit cheaper, but this is GW). Plenty of new options for the Ork army, and gives you a really good idea what's going on with Ghazghkull's Waaagh!. Some of the relics are ridiculously useful (bosspole that gives Fearless, 4+ KFF, heck even the gun whose profile you have to roll each game). The formations are where it shines. Say you need to get five big mobs across the table but don't want to use up Heavy Support slots for Battlewagons: Boom, Blitz Brigade! Or the Ghazstar unit. The Green Tide for fun. Various other stuff. As opposed to the formations in the Apoc book, these are made for 40K, so you can actually use them in games.
And yeah, have to give another tip of the hat to the fluff. Shows us that the Orks really are the meanest SOBs in the galaxy.

I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy the book, but it really is a nice buy. Then again, I got mine through store credit after trading in a butt load of Magic cards. The fluff is awesome, and the detachment and formations are really nifty, even if they might not be the most...well...SANE to field. Then again, we Orks live for insanity!

I think it's awesome; I got mine with the Warboss Edition, and I really hope the bonus book is a way forward for the limited edition sets. It's a great value add, plus I got it earlier than everyone else.

No, it's GWs problem as 1. people will pirate it instead of buying it if it was a decent value product and 2. people are saying "feth you GW" and leaving to other games. It's not our problem in the slightest.

You really can't factor people breaking the law into a 'worth getting' analysis. If you're negative about the hobby, you're the one killing it; in addition to encouraging people to do the two things you just mentioned.
I hope your local hobby community is thriving wih that attitude; mine is doing just great, because great hobbyists back up their passions.

I wouldn't say that the supplement 'makes the codex playable'. That's a little asinine. It's like other supplements. It gives more options. I wouldn't say you'd need to buy it ASAP, but it's still worth the buy. I feel the Ork codex this time around is still solid, and I can't wait to play the gak out of my Orks with our new tricks. Man, the negativity around the web these days is so damn profound. We get it, GW sucks, blah blah blah, it isn't changing, yada yada yada. Thus far, I'm content, because I haven't really had any reason to spend money on my Orks, which was sad. Now, I actually got to invest in my army again (Via books), which is fine with me.

Your statement utterly lacks context, but it's essentially true. When referring to 'the Games Workshop hobby', you refer to the hobby products they manufacture. When referring to 'hobby' in general, it's people like you and me. Hobbyists.
I'm a hobbyist who works with GW miniatures, and in the context of a GW product, when I say 'the hobby' I'm talking about my real-life hobby within that realm. If I was talking about my Dystopian Wars products, 'the hobby' would refer to that realm. A company absolutely is not 'the hobby'. It hardly even needs to be said. Pro that. I've found the Ork codex out of all really solid throughout 5th and 6th Ed, but it's always great to have a new army list to work around. New miniatures goes without saying... as if I didn't loot and Orkify everything that every other race has gotten throughout the years.

No, my statement had all the context it needed. You simply said 'the hobby' when referring to a conversation about a GW product; the hobby is a far greater beast than just GW, and people downloading this supplement isn't harming the greater hobby, just GW.
So no, downloading this supplement isn't harming the hobby. Its harming GW. Two entirely different issues. Funny enough, many other games offer their rules to download for free.

I feel it does hurt the hobby though. If someone is illegally obtaining stuff for a game, it shouldn't be encouraged. Despite one's feelings for GW, buy the official books at the very least, even if you buy them from an online retailer. Then, at least, you won't be giving GW their life blood if you hate them so much. And while other games offer rules for free, Warhammer doesn't, and that doesn't excuse one to illegally obtain the rules.
I'd honestly be pissed if someone came into the store with fake material. If you can't be bothered to at least get the real codex, then this hobby might not be suited for you. I don't mind facing stand-in models as long as the models are accurate, especially if it's because you're just starting or really CAN'T afford GW's product line. But don't sob story me with your ill gotten goods.

I'm not going to get into the moral debate surrounding piracy, as that was not my intention. All I'm saying is that downloading this supplement has little to no relevance to the greater picture for the hobby and other companies. The point about free rules I was making was that other companies avoid the issue entirely by just making them free downloads in the first place, and as such, are not affected by people pirating a GW supplement.
Also, buying from an online retailer is still giving money to GW. It may be less money, but you're still paying GW in some fashion.
My point is simply that GW is not the hobby. The hobby is the miniature wargaming hobby, of which GW is a part.
*Edit* I'm also not going to drag this any further off topic. Feel free to PM if you really want to keep discussing this.

The two options you are offering are 1) pay GWs prices or 2) stop buying GW products. That is the mindset that is currently leading GW down a very bad road as more and more people are choosing to leave GW for other games and companies. If GW where open to the idea that things can be priced lower than they are now however maybe their next financial report won't show another 20% drop in sales.

I'm not saying if you disagree, you're being negative. I was more or less addressing the community as a whole. It's not often I see or hear any sort of praise for the company that produces a game that we all, obviously, enjoy for one reason or another. Why else would we all be here? I'm not trying to poster boy GW by any means, but when they actually DO something good for once, I wish credit could be given where it's due.
As for the supplement, I'm not sure why everyone seems to be so hard on the Ork supplement, when everyone seems to be OK with supplements for any other faction. It's a nice add on. It's not manditory. You're not being forced to pay another 50 bucks for another book. It just gives options. Which is nice. It's not providing any sort of extra, exclusive units you're missing out on by not buying it. You just get new toys (Relics) and nifty formations and a new detachment. Again...just more options, like the other supplements. Buy it or don't, it's totally your choice. But as the topic is asking my opinion...Yes, I do feel it's worth the buy. If you do, is another story.

To be fair, it might be possible that the waaagh is to orks as skyblight was to Nids. Although it may not, *shrugs*
Anyways, I wouldn't quite say that this is the only one that has been responded to with bile. The Eldar one upset quite a couple by feeling cheated by recoloured artwork, minimal rules, and costing the same as a codex. The Tau was the most praised but that was in part because it brought rules that individuals had wanted and had fluff for a character many, even some Tau haters, found interesting. Add to that, it had a pretty good combo in it that, although not the best, stirred up some potential. That said, much of the rules could easily have been wrapped in some HQ Elite -> Troops altering rule. The SM supplements have garnered bile. IH from the continued massacre of fluff, despite the cruel part of IH coming out perfectly, The Imperial Fist one went almost unnoticed but there was grmbling that, instead of chapter-wide, it was company sized (a bit more than 100 marines). CSM? The Black Legion fluff was praised but the rules were heavily rebuked even by BL lovers. When the Crimson Slaughter got a supplement, there was an uncontrollable furious wrath that broke out. Fury that some no-name, out of nowhere meaningless chapter fallen chaos renegade marine had gotten a supplement before any non- BL legion had come out, not a single chaos god dedicated legion, not even Raiders. Nids? Complaints it was pay to actually be able to bring nids to competitive to function. Scions? It was criticized for its limited rules, horrendous fluff, and being rushed before IG released to obviously bolster sales. Add to that, there has always been an undertone of frustration and bitterment at the, frankly, overcosted price of the supplements.

Nah, the ork codex is a complete codex all by itself, considering all aspects. The supplement is not needed at all, since none of the formations are mandatory or army defining (the battlewagon one is the one that comes closest to that). It's a book of nice options, pictures and fluff that you can buy on top of the regular ork codex, similar to Imperial Armor 8: Raid on Kastorell Novem. Besides, I only paid about $75 for both.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

Honestly... I feel like the intent *was* to make the codex $100. And the reason I say that is because of the number of copies of Waaagh! Ghazghkull that I saw in my local GW store. I don't recall ever seeing a supplement have that many copies on the shelf, so they're assuming they can move that many copies, which is very likely as W!G has a lot of things Ork players want (updated formations from Apoc that are usable in standard 40K games) plus stuff that's just too freaking good to pass up on, honestly (the relics). I've seen a lot of army lists online using the W!G relics, and people suggesting using formations from that book to get around various limitations or issues. It feels like they absolutely meant for the book to be a "must-have."
