Subject: Sarkeesian driven out of home by online abuse and death threats
The only thing regarding Quinn anyone ever talked about to me was that she supposedly cheated on a now ex-boyfriend whom showed himself to be a vicious, spiteful ass whose words can't really be trusted as a result of how he has handled the situation.
It's been kind of lost in the other thread as we talk about other things but this is basically how the story goes;
Fine Young Capitalists started a charity event called "Games Jam" to back women to make a game and give the proceeds to charity. The goal was to give women who otherwise lacked the ability to do so a chance to make a game and was inspired by a comment read by one of the FYC members that "women couldn't make a game even if they wanted to" somewhere on the internet (he's never specified where he read this). So the basic goal was "tell us a game you want to make and we'll get it made and give the proceeds to charity."
At the same time Pepsi was organizing a similar event to which Zoe Quinn was a participant. Zoe found her way to the FYC event and essentially got the group black balled from media outlets and attempted to shut down the crowd funding projects (the later failed, as they say). The Pepsi event itself fell apart this past March and never materialized into anything. Quinn wrote an article that's kind of baffling and confusing to read really, but it essentially seems to be her stressing out over getting sued while this event falls apart. She makes it very unclear however exactly what happened to collapse the event and it basically disappears to never be seen again.
Until her ex, Eron Gjoni, went online and published a document detailing her cheating on him with 5 other men. Not long after he did that people asked him about the Pepsi Game Jam, as by this August it had already become a minor conspiracy on crowd funding sites and he accused her of purposely sabotaging the Pepsi Game Jam event (which he claims was to the tune of $100 million) because it would 'damage her image.' He's never specifically detailed any of this information, so at least as to his accusations that she cheated on him we only have his word.
The 'she cheated on me' thing has not been substantiated, but her sabotage of the FYC Game Jam has been, and it seems credible that she played some part in the collapse of the Pepsi Game Jam. But basically her ex leveled those accusations at her, and given the previous conspiracy theory over the Games Jam events already running, after he made his announcements the event exploded on the internet and 2 weeks later here we stand.
EDIT: As an expansion, over the past two weeks numerous claims of censorship and conspiracy have popped up on Steam, Twitter, Imgur, and Reddit as well as on media outlets that the conspiracy (Quinnspiracy or GamerGate) was being covered up by outlets not reporting on it and deleting posts and threads attempting to discuss it. Several articles detailing the event were posted and then removed by outlets. Some people snapped screen shots over twitter and facebook of Zoe Quinn contacting admins from these sites and asking them to delete comments/threads or requesting private correspondence with them. One Reddit Mod posted a private message from her asking him to delete comments on Total Biscuit's video about the event. That mods privileges were removed and another moderator started deleting the reddit which only added fuel to the fire.
To an extent, part of the 'cover up' is likely attributable to these sides not wanting to publish unsubstantiated claims or 'feed the beast' so to speak, but the numerous deletions and article removals have only added fuel to the conspiracy fire, especially now that numerous people are doxing members of the game media and finding lots of connections between them that more than hint at unethical conduct.

Well its more that Anita is connected to frauds like Bart Bagget, and has been accused of a lot of stuff and now is connected to Zoe Quinn via Maya Kramer. It gets harder and harder to ignore the accusations against her when she is connected to more and more stuff.
But I agree, some gamers are toxic but not all, but that's general public, its like when we tell "normal people" about warhammer, sometimes you get a lot of guff. The bad apples are out there that don't have moral compasses.

And that includes on this forum.
Lie.
It's been stated multiple times that the whole sleeping to get better reviews thing was a lie and that the true bad things about the entire case were:
a) She faking a raid to claim having been harassed while insulting lots of people in return
b) She falsely claiming misogny
c) She cashing up on an event that led to the downfall of another

Still unable to see what she did that was wrong…

This breakdown is how it seems to described everywhere else I've come into contact with this story. The only addendum I'd add is that i thought there were screen shots of messages between her and her ex (posted by her ex) regarding her involvement in sabotaging FYC, though I may be misremembering.

There are published by her ex but its about the collapse of Pepsi Game Jam. If you read the article I linked (again, its really hard to actually get at what she's saying) but one way to read it is that the reporter she's with, allegedly Matti Leshams who was fired shortly after that event collapsed, was on the phone protecting her from being sued while the event fell apart. The tweets released seem to pertain to her talking to her ex while Matti was doing this. Her ex has accused her of destroying his career as it pertains to the event.

So we have evidence of her being an overly competitive ass (and for that, she definitely needed to be called out on it then disappear in to obscurity), then her ex decided to cash in on it out of apparent spite, and then a lot of conspiracy theories took off because no respectable publication wants to talk about something which is little more than he-said-she-said internet drama.

Ok as I said I only started in on this topic last week, and in a related discussion I saw this.
Anyway, the bloke won me over. Is he a reputable source of information or is there some angle of his I haven't heard yet?
We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

Well I wouldn't describe her as an 'overly competitive ass.' I'd just call her an ass
The Streisand Effect however is strong with this one.
Could she have cheated on her boyfriend? Maybe, but he's sticking to his "I'm not going to say how I know this" claim so there's no way to really know who is telling the truth. He could just be that bitter and using what he knows about her to get the internet mob sicked on her (and if that's his plan, it's been working rather marvelously).
All her attempts to get this under wraps have resulted in a lot of her behavior being investigated by the worst kind of people; those with a lot of internet know how and nothing better to do with their time. Her sabotage of FYC seems definite*, and it very possible she fabricated the hacking and doxing of her social media account and personal information herself in an attempt to shock everyone into shutting up. Personally, I have no idea how she could have collapsed a $100 million project. That just doesn't make sense. She's not that important, so how on earth that's supposed to work I have doubts.
*Plus, now that the FYC are partnered with 4Chan, they've been attacked by feminists hacktivists supporting Quinn, which only makes her look worse.

Have you read about Anita Sarkeesian and that Devin Faraci guy?!
Respectfully disagreeing with the pro Sarkeesian crowd, I have to say, the whole fething industry just looks like it is full of absolute arseholes, and it cant be misogyny because 90% of them are men but Jesus, what a bunch of corrupt douchebags.
If game devs, reviewers, and bloggers of all things, are such a nest of vipers, why are we surprised when politicians lie and feather their nests?

Doxing is short for "document tracing" and it means to find someone's personal information and then publishing that information publicly via the internet. It can include hacking or simple phishing. Basically, matty's earlier post detailing the 'man behind Anita' was the product of doxxing. Someone digging through the bowls of the internet for information (in that case, using archive.org).

It's generally treated as such, but it's also popular among hacktivists, and sometimes does good. About a year ago, Wikipediocracy, published an article concern a pedophile ring on Wikipedia and Deviant Art, which they investigated and revealed via doxxing. It's become a common tactic for people to go after other people for things they just don't like. Sometimes for good and sometimes for trolololololols.

Exalted
Yeah the five or so articles I've seen painting gamers collectively in a negative light seem absurd, is everyone using the internet a gamer by default? The irony to me is the same outlets telling me (a gamer) that I must "grow up" or something are now calling gamers names. It's absurd.
The real story, which is totally a new thing, is that people said mean things and threatened others, on the internet, of all places. And there's totally like nothing else to that story,

Anyone else finding this all very hard to keep up with? It might be because I don't really care about zoey one way or another. I mean apart from the fact that she made games, I don't really know what this going on has to do with games. Maybe I am just looking for an excuse to be lazy and not care though. :S

No it's really really crazy. Like I said in the OT thread, it might be a long time before we have anyone able to look back at this and piece together the reality of what is happening right now. On the one hand, it can seem really easy in the moment to know what's happening, but being in the moment is often more blinding than it appears. Who knows what scholars, journalists, or researchers might be able to reveal about this a year from now (assuming they bother).

Off the top of my head...
1. She's accused of sleeping with journalists, and getting positive media coverage on her games in return.
2. Shes accused of sabotaging the Pepsi game jam. (?)
3. It has been proven that she sabotaged The Fine Young Capitalists game jam. And publicly congratulated herself afterwards.
4. Theres an ongoing media campaign (possibly coordinated by a PR company?) among gaming journalists and sites all leaping to Zoe's defence by demonizing ALL gamers (the "Gamer Identity is dying!" crap).
Right now Zoe is implicated in several scandals, so it has everything to do with games.

You'd think that for sociologists/psychologists studying internet behavior, this would be a very interesting case to study.

Its all interconnected, the corruption, censorship and arrogance of the people involved is very concerning when people are afraid to oppose the SJWs mind set. Imagine developers paying Anita Sarkeesian to make sure their games wont offend her (especially if she is fraud), and then when the game bombs or has to be redone a dozen times the game gets canceled. Essentially the end game is extreme and constant political correctness and mass censorship. If the journalists are pushing that agenda and attacking anyone that opposes it you have massive conflicts of interest not to mention conflicts of morality and violations of various freedoms and rights (hence where feminazi comes from). All this could potentially lead to the collapse in gaming.
Some SJWs think that even looking at, smiling or saying hello to a woman is sexual harassment, you don't extreme political correctness in the world.

Maybe? The thing about the antia videos is that they were directly about games. This quin thing seems more liked games adjacent? I also think I missed out on who the fine young capitalists are too.

Damn this is a complicated issue. And kind of dumb on the part of Zoey Quinn. You should not go around and start tearing down the information because it might make you look bad. If you take it down, it just paints you as more guilty.

There are a few games that have been picketed because of their subject matter. There was originally going to be a side scroller game that was about the holocaust. And the media blew up saying that what right does a game have to talk about this?
The Game Developer was then banned from not making the game. Even though he was doing it all for good intentions. The game was to teach people about the holocaust. To warn against it.
There was another game where it was basically going to be a historical game on one of the battles in iraq. A very famous battle that very few people knew about. The game was going to show the experiences of the soldiers.
And I mean all the experiences. The game was about to come out, and the media got angry about it as well. Games Journalists attacked, picketed it, mothers who had lost their sons misinterpeted it as a glorified fantasy game about killing people, and possibly watching their sons die.
This of course was false, as they initially said they would not base any of the soldiers on their real life counterparts. They only based it on the stories of those that survived. The Soldiers wanted others to know through the game what they had gone through.
And I find that extremely heart breaking. Because the game was actually going to be pretty incredible.
But that is the media, to paint out games as just childhood power fantasies. When many games, are not even about that.
There is the whole stigma that games are for children. That all that play video games are just man-childs. Children in adult bodies. There is nothing wrong with playing with a video game, I aliken it to reading a book. The only difference is.
It is interactive, and their is a goal. There is something to do, but there are tons of things in the game that have a message to them.
A theme an idea. A thought that it gives to the player.
I mean there are tons of games like that Prince of Persia is about a snide prince who learns humility and responsibility.
Half Life is about humanity fighting against all odds, and learning that all human life is in someway precious and that it is worth fighting for.
Should I go on?
No I don't have to.
All games have a point to them, an overarching idea to them.

Yeah the similar message the articles put forward seem oddly specific.

Do you play 30k? It'd be a lot cooler if you did.

Yeah, but it's what not on the internet that interests me. One of the tragedies of the internet is that a lot of primary documentation gets deleted/not saved. What about Kotaku's internal documents? What might those say about this? What might people involved now have to say years from now? What bits of internet information might be sitting somewhere undiscovered by everyone currently hunting for the truth?
We should never assume that just because we are living an event, that we know perfectly what is happening around us.
But that's the historian in me speaking.
You should not go around and start tearing down the information because it might make you look bad. If you take it down, it just paints you as more guilty.
The Streisand Effect. You'd think that sooner or later, people would get a little more aware of it.
