I rate Nolan as a director, and if this is done well, could be a cracker. http://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/dec/28/christopher-nolan-set-to-direct-dunkirk-evacuation-drama

Celebrating military defeats is a peculiarly British thing, but there's a bigger problem looming on the horizon: how the feth do the Americans fit into Dunkirk evacuations?

This is Hollywood we're talking about and they're not going to let a minor detail of America not being in the war get in the way

My money's on Tom Cruise, as General Patton, riding to the rescue on the USS Lexington

Nah, the British will be on the verge of defeat, then a flight of P-51 Mustangs will come in, bomb the hell out of the Germans and then drop a 22 mile wide US flag across the channel for the poor Brits to run across to FREEDOM!

A Sherman will then be catapulted from an aircraft carrier to land outside the Reichstag and blow up Hitler...

In all seriousness, though, this may be a very welcome film. Nolan is a quality director, and there has been a dearth of decent WW2 films in recent years.

It should be nice and depressing. Nolan loves bleak and vaguely depressing.

Sadly, I fear you'll be proven right.

At the end of the day, though, Britain has to take some responsibility, but not all, for the fall of France.

The BEF was only 10 divisions, the French had, what, 60 divisions?

So you're in?

If the world needs anything, it's more British war films.

We made dozens in the 1960s and 70s, but then they dried up for some strange reason.

With Dunkirk, and Peter Jackson doing the Dambusters, the British war film is back. Yeahhhhh!!!!!!

We need to find room for Jennifer Lawrence as well

The French army, not the heroes Gotham deserves, but the heroes they need.

Sound's like a promising movie. All those little boats heading bravely across the channel would make for a moving sight.

It'd be hilarious to have Shirer show up and just start calling every German a homosexual.

Stretching it a bit with Shirer, but knowing Hollywood, he'll probably pass secret battle plans on to the British via an ipad, having first ordered a Coca-Cola and a big mac

Agree with the boat bit.

Still getting this suspicion that a retired character, played by Nicolas Cage, will own a boat hire business as Dunkirk.

This movie needs Randy Quaid as a washed up tug boat captain. Then again every movie could use Randy Quaid as a washed up tug boat captain.

I rate Quaid as an actor - I'd have him in it any day of the week, and he could salvage a crashed Stuka, fly it into battle, and take out half the German army

Somewhere in south-central England.

There are still a number of Dunkirk Little Ships in use. If I won the lottery, I would definitely try to buy one like this:

http://www.hscboats.co.uk/boats/mb-278/?portfolioID=20

The internal timbers show the place where German machine-gun bullets have been patched.

What history! A great little boat for weekending and crossing the Channel too.

Here's a great little Public Information film from WW2 about the Little Ships.

Of course we must not forget the contributions of the Royal Navy and Royal Airforce.

(When evacuating Crete and sustaining heavy losses, Admiral Cunningham said, "It takes the Navy three years to build a new ship … it will take 300 years to build a new tradition." and carried on to rescue as many Army as possible.)

I do love the old school, British public information films. Comedy gold, as they're unintentionally funny most of the time.

Here's a serious thought. The movie, "The Alamo", finished up with the battle of San Jacinto, in which the Mexican army was crushed.
It could be entirely in the realm of probability this movie ends with the invasion of Normandy, giving us the American angle along with every other country that participated.

On the subject - there are many good books that tell the story - some first hand.

I wonder if they will show much from the French side of things - they lost lots of men, ships and equipment in the operation.

No US fighter pilots at that point so can't do a Pearl Harbour - well they can but......

On Nolan:

Well if anything like his other "efforts" it will be massively overlong, effects heavy and lacking actual characters or any real heart. Of course anyone who does not worship it will be accused of "not understanding it" cos............

I thought the first US pilots flew just after the Dunkirk evacuation?

The first Eagle Squadron was formed in September of 1940, Dunkirk was fought in June of 40'. There may still have been some Americans flying, but there weren't any distinct units of them at least.

I wish somebody would turn the book 'Winged Dagger' by Major Roy Farran into either a movie of a Band of Brothers style production, or perhaps Panzer Commander (Colonel Hans Von Luck). Both are really good and what is great is there is a incident in the desert which is mentioned in both books. You experience it from both sides.

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

There is generally a lot of cynicism from the UK and Europe when it comes to American portrayals of World War 2 events in the European theatre.

The implication being, that there is doubt that an American film maker or an American studio would finance / film a major WW2 film production without having Americans as the (most probably sole) heroes.
