Well, I’ve been working in relative secrecy on a charity project for just under a year now.
I wanted to have enough of a plan and evidence of what I’m going to do before showing the public, because there’s nothing worse than saying, “I’m going to do this!” and then not having any kind of plan.
And now, well, I’ve reached a point where I need help from you, my fellow romancers of the paintbrush.

This project is called Second Chancers, and will be raising money for Macmillan (cancer support and respite care) and Orchid (male cancer support).
I think it’s probably best if I just show you what I’m doing.

That is over 180 second-hand Space Marines, vehicles, and some new bits and pieces. From Space Crusade, to RT Beakies, Tension Marines and more modern Tacs.
I’m going to paint 365 sponsored, personalised Imperial Miniatures in a year (sponsoring will take place through a direct-giving type website, I don’t want to handle any money!). The charity a sponsor picks will be represented on the miniature, along with the initials or name they dedicate when sponsoring.

Now, what do I need Dakka’s help with?
I need a paint scheme for the army. Please suggest ideas, or use the linked tool to give a quick idea: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/smp.php
I’ve decided the main theme should be a pale colour, and then the lenses and shoulder pads will show what charity was chosen. Macmillan uses grass-green, and Orchid are represented with sky blue. A chapter symbol is still in the works.

I’m going to be making a post per squad in this topic, so that I can update each squad with the before & after photos once stripped and primed.
Full details of the charity stuff will come when I've got more groundwork in place!

A friend has kindly given me three blue things. Now would be a good time to explain that I don't know anything about Space Marines other than how to make Tac squads.

So Vehicle Count: 3

Ideas on how to personalise these, and what they should have in the holes would be very welcome. I'm not going to keep them blue.

Accompanied by one of the stranger things I've found when gathering parts - here's mardy Calgar, who will be sat on one of these things. Because somebody stole his camping chair, and he hasn't got any of the weapons required to be played.

And while we're on the subject of ridiculous charity projects, you should check out Baphominiatures Chaos Daemon Army Raffle for St. Jude's Children's Hospital

Ha! So you have. Also remember, I have to do this close to 350 times, so simple and striking is best.

I was gonna go with EC pink, but it's not a breast cancer event, and it really gums up the idea of anyone wanting them afterwards.

I will come back with a simple version shortly.
On a side note, did you bought out all the cheap marine lots from the drunkenmonkey store in ebay?

Haha, no! I went for lots of mislabeled, badly photographed or broken lots. Some were donated, some were flea market finds.

This is actually a cool idea, now i just need to win lotto so i can take 3 years off work to paint the hello kitty marine chapter for breast cancer.

I wondered about white and then making all the trim match the charity - chest piece, shoulders, gloves and lenses, but I worry that white could look half finished.

Great project Buttery. If you need any arms, guns or backpacks, or need any help stripping some of paint off a batch, I am more than happy to help out.

I knew someone who did this to a Camero for breast cancer support and awareness, took it to shows too. I think this army will look stellar when it's done. I do like the blue and white scheme.

Cheers!
The main stripping pain is time. I'd happily send some off with you and a tub of Biostrip if you have the patience. It usually comes off clean, but some black primers have been a massive pain.

Aye, but Biostrip does it in 1-2 hours and is miles less unpleasant.
I'll let you know, gotta try and figure out what ratio of this army should be what. I was originally thinking 200-300 tacs. But 65 leaders, vehicles and termies may be difficult.

You're both true gentlemen.

I should mention that Januine here has accepted the unenviable task of repairing the world's most abused Techmarine.

It has now been stripped to bare metal. And it's .. better?

Great idea!

My fiance worked in a Cystic Fibrosis clinic a few years back and I've learned a lot about that terrible disease and the brave kids (and some adults) who live with it.

During that time I painted a figure for a CF fundraiser and a lot of the charities use purple and gold.

First Squad to get their own post.
This one's got some weird and special bits in. A few Space Crusade marines, the original "female Space Marine" (Sister Sin), to name a few.
Well worth a zoom for some retro weirdness.

Space Marine Count: 10 I guess.

Got any original beakies?

Theyd make a cool squad.

If you're still deciding on a colour scheme you could do a GW made chapter. If you're going for a light blue, Ultramarines could be an alright choice. I mean, everyone knows who they are, and they aren't that complex paint wise either. Ultras for charity seem like a solid choice if you ask me.

If you wanted to go full retro, Crimson Fists could do as well. Having some RT marines could look great with some of the original colours!

Or you could just. You know.

If you can't believe in yourself, believe in me! Believe in the Dakka who believes in you!

They're not going to be auctioned, they're going to be sponsored, and the scheme will reflect what charity each person donated to.

Also, I do not think that GW would object to this project, but I think affiliating one of their chapters/legions with cancer is not a good idea.

Also also one of the parts of this project is going to be a custom codex with a fluff piece for each sponsored marine.

Yeah, keep watching the updates.
The next one is amazingly bad, but another is cream RT beakies.
