How good is it really?

It combines two of the stupidest rules in 40K, Barrage and Destroyer, for a decent price and in an army with easy access to psychic powers to buff it. It's good.

It's not as good as it could be because of the -1 to the result table which stops you from just deleting targets, but not many things can survive its shooting. The template shot is even useful because it ignore cover.

I've played with it a couple of times and I think its the best battle tank I've ever used.

Works best in an ITC scenario where you can nuke invisible units with blasts, combine that with guide and prescience to reoll your scatters and you're golden. I've killed many a Wraithknight, Demon Prince, Riptide wing, Stormsurge in a single turn with just two of them. Since they count as S10 for instant death purposes they do a lot of work against your multi-wound characters even if you roll poorly for your D hits.

Definitely a recommended unit for a competitive meta.

I thought the warp hunter was like the d-scythes and counted as str 4 for instant death purposes, it is str 10 just with a -1 to the chart wow!

No d-scythes count as S4

crownaxe you confused me! Is the warp hunter weapon a str d with a -1 on the chart roll or does it have the distort scythe special rule?

Warp hunters have the dispersed rule, which for the craftworlds version is D-1, but still strength 10.

The corsair warp hunter merely counts any roll of a 6 as a 5, so wounding on 2's and strength 10, but only one unit of hunters can be taken for corsairs.

Thank you for the clarification and you are exalted my friend! So it can instant death a thunder wolf lord on a roll of 3+ right? Is the template weapon just a template or torrent I need to buy the book but my dum behind would probably buy the wrong one and be off, thanks for clearing the air dude!

The template version is just template, no torrent sadly, Doom of Mymeara (2nd edition) has all the rules

Exactly right, the D flail does not have the same ruling as the D scythes and makes no mention of any limits when it comes to instant death.

Do remember that since your -1 on the D chart, TWC will get any invulns against those D hits still, which is why in a competitive meta you need a squadron of them.

That formation only gives you a single large blast at S if I remember right.

In case of TWC I'd just suggest throwing as many wounds via monofiliment and Scatterlasers and save the Warp Hunters for your Wraithknights/ Wulfen and stuff

Warp Hunters Do a lot of work in an army. It is to the point when I play, my Wraithknight is just a distraction. It typically takes one game for my opponent to realize what the real threat in my army is.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Having been on the receiving end of them and watched others take their punishment, they are definitely a brutal unit and will improve any Eldar list with their inclusion. They are one of those units that some players will flat out refuse to play against if you use them too frequently in a more friendly setting, so be mindful of what kind of game you want. They're not the best Eldar unit as it isn't that difficult to exploit their fragility but they're definitely top-tier.

This guy is wrong. No squad needed. Better to have the multiple small blasts than one large blast. Also better to have multiple squads. More units to target, less eggs in one basket as well.

Disperse subtracts -1 on the D table, so wounds on 3+

No, it is just D that treats 6 as a 5.

Dispersed: A weapon with this special rule, when rolling on the Destroyer Weapons Attack table, counts all rolls of 6 (Devastating Hit/Deathblow) as 5 (Solid Hit/Seriously Wounded) results instead.

Also a squadron of 2 warp hunters will not join their blasts into a large blast, it just boosts the output from D3+1 to 2D3+2

Its better to squadron them for corsairs, as they only have one available heavy support slot per coterie.

For regular eldar with extra available heavy slots, however, I would agree that you should separate them. Having to target 2 different units will help survivability and damage output.

No, I'm completely right. Warp Hunters can't have one large blast at all, and we're talking Corsairs who are only allowed to have a single Warp Hunter squadron being a 0-1 choice (same goes for the Lynx, though I'm not sure you can squadron them anyway).

If you take the Fist of Vaul or whatever the formation is called in the IA book you can take the warp hunters in the formation 2 can give you large blast 3 give you apocalyptic blast (7in template) and makes their attacks true D weapon goodness. That formation is great fun and just pure awesome.

Another advantage to squadrons is that they make better use of the barrage rules to snipe out characters, as all of the hits from their gaks will be centered on the unit's original target (assuming the first shot hits, natch).

I think there's a compelling case for both single Warp Hunters and a squadron.

There was a mail from Forgeworld fixing some differences in Doom of mymeara between corsairs and Craftworld units., Lynx pulsar range (it's 36" not 24" )and how dispersed should be resolved (just like D-scythes rule in codex Craftworld with a -1 to the table)

Of course as always you can argue how valid this points are until they show in a FAQ.

yeah I like either squadron or individual units. however if I do squadron as I stated up above the Fist of Vaul lets me do Large blast with two warp hunters at True D and apocalyptic blast with 3 warp hunters at True D.

You aren't right. Squadrons are unnecessary. Better to take them in singles as it gives you more targeting ability and more units. 2x1 > 1x2

7in apocalyptic D template is very effective using the fist of Vaul formation.

I'd still argue that 3x1 is better because if you go for the big template you lose barrage. Barrage is half of what makes warp hunters disgusting.

true I just see both as viable options and 7in D is nothing to sniff at either that can remove a lot of minis.
