Subject: Would 40K 8th edition be the perfect time to release this September?

I am wondering if this September 2016 be the perfect time for GW to release 8th edition? Only reason I say that is because there is no White Dwarf for August so no one will know what is going on. It looks like there is no more leaks so if GW wanted to surprise us, this would have been the perfect time to do so. I know next year is the 30th anniversary of Rogue Trader (or is it 35th?) so I believe that is when GW would love to release a new edition for 40K. But do you think this would have been a lost opportunity to release a new edition when GW is all about secrecy and surprise?

No. In response to this and all the AoSifying of 40k, just no.
They won't do it with some codices still waiting to be FAQed.

Then again, they may be accumulating all the FAQs as a way to have 8th ed written for them. They definitely won't release 8th ed this year, but wouldn't it be amazing if next year they did release 8th ed with all the changes suggested in the BRB FAQ, plus an amended FAQ/errata section for all the Codices
I'm not gonna hold my breathe, but it'd be nice to have a condensed, more thought out version of the core Rules along with any necessary changes to the Codices written in

The new "end times" campaign seems likely first. However many sets of books that includes for all the factions then we get 8th and the new resting state of the galaxy and hopefully a cool global campaign.

If GW had business sense, I would expect them to go for the christmas season. Far off enough to tie up the remaining loose ends and also prime shopping season.
Given that Rountree actually does seem to know what he's doing, this might be possible.

I doubt it...but I think anything in the next year or two is a bad move. While I don't play modern 40K and I understand 7th is a pile of cow dung ...the fastest way to lose customers is to start changing editions every year and a half. 7th came out way too shortly after 6th.
If you can't design a rule set which can survive 4-5 years between major edition overhauls, don't do it. People build armies which can take a year or two sometimes just to match a certain game mechanic or codex. Changing core rules and invalidating peoples investments within such a short time span will give the game a bad reputation for abandoning players too quickly.
You also kill off half of your people who are considering buying in when someone says "well, wait five months for the new edition" etc.

I didn't consider 7th edition as a "surprise" - more like a really stupid move considering 6th was only 2 years old, meaning I paid £45 for a rulebook that not only was now useless but also fell apart because the binding couldn't hold the insane amount of pages GW crammed into it I'll have the same reaction if they decide to release 8th now, except this time I won't be buying anything

With this new box set coming out, I'd doubt they would do it all again in the next 6 months.
We might get a new edition next year, or some kind of update to 7th to bring it in line with all the FAQs.
The anniversary of rogue trader is a slight red herring I think, they will do something big for it, but I think they would want to keep their powder dry on a new edition.
A big event for the anniversary could be a boost to sales, and an excellent marketing opportunity as there will be a lot of excitement and hype. But they will be able to create that hype with whatever they release for the anniversary.
A new edition will also create a lot of hype and excitement and boost sales by its very nature. It would be wasteful from a marketing perspective to combine the two events.

Well there was time when 2 years between editions was unheard off...And they released expensive books for FB months before canning game completely. And haven't been affraid of releasing army books that will get invalidated within year either...
And in 6 months that box has already brought most of the income. Job well done for it as far as GW is concerned. Would be good time to release another start settish box.
(plus GW could just replace rulebook with new version once edition hits in).
Though I don't expect within 6 months. More like 6-12 months. If it waits itself until fall of 2017 I'm surprised.

From reading the threads here on Dakka, most of the rage against 7th is apparently that it's not 5th edition.
The real irony of this situation is that the same people crying for 8th edition to save 40K are missing the point that 8th edition 40K is likely to be much more like 7th than it is closer to 5th, and therefore doing NOTHING for them, other than giving them another new edition to complain about not being as good as 5th.
I have a feeling that the biggest change to 8th edition will be dreadnaughts all becoming monstrous creatures, and more things moving to having toughness and wounds instead of AV and Structural points. Flyers, MCs, GCs, LOWs, Psychic Powers, and formations will all remain part of the game with minor tweeks.

8th won't save 40K, I agree. At least I don't think it will - they'd have to do a lot more than just tweak a few things like they did for 7th.
I haven't been keeping up with many discussion threads on the subject of 7th, but I reckon most people are peed off because of how lazy it was; the jump between 5th and 6th is fairly large, whereas the jump from 6th to 7th is tiny. Hell I used to straight up forget what 7th added to the game when I played my last few games.
Can't blame people for getting angry at 6th and 7th for not being on par with 5th - the more I think about it, the more I miss it

I don't think it's a good idea. I believe in hype and promotion is a good thing. All I meant is with GW loving secrecy if this would have been the perfect time to release 8th edition without anyone knowing. I mean this time next year unless they stop having WD for a month this could have been opportunity lost.
Not sure why some people think I am saying it's coming out in August. I even said it will most likely come out next year. So not sure what is with the comments "not going to happen" since I didn't even say it was happening. Just if it's a lost opportunity lost since GW loves secrecy and surprising us with impulse buys.

They would have to rip the current editions to the bones to fix things; it's not really the BRB being the issue so much as the Codexes anyway (there' some things - summoning & invisibility in the main book, but most other rules aren't bad - the trouble starts when you get into the power disparity, "random balances everything!" and "special snowflake rules for everything" in the codexes).
But another edition this year - or next, is too soon. In fact, I think I'm done with editions from GW, and unless they really turn the game around in some dramatic fashion the next time they turn over an edition, I'm out - and will be continuing my own work on the rules.

( grav etc. ) - Walkers that should really be vehicles So no it isn't that it isn't 5th. I actually enjoy the freedom 7th gives compared to 5th. I can now play any army that I dream up this is great : D. its just that they need to rebalance the point values and kill off all hyper efficient kill all guns and make all walkers walkers again instead of monsters. 5th only wins when you take a look at the missions. They really need to fix those 7th missons. Random unbalanced cards and the 1 unit = 1 kill point missions are just poop. But going back to 5th with the current codexes would even be worse. All TAU, SM and Eldar players who are suggesting this should really be looked at with suspicion.
