So it's an open secret among MTG players that we all love the smell of a freshly opened pack of cards. Just that smell of the printing press preserved in that little bag that sings "NEW RARE CARD" that many of my friends are addicted to. I was painting one of my models and suddenly realized that because I always buy second hand models, I have a similar nostalgic reaction whenever I smell simple green or pinesol (on a tangent, this also makes whenever I gotta clean the floor weirdly addicting and yet also incredibly boring and tedious).
Do you guys have a similar reaction? Are there any other weird things that you have come to associate with 40k that you love to just indulge in?

For years, I associated WH40k with body odor. I am not joking. Every time I was in the FLGS, there was someone there that stunk. There's STILL always someone there that stinks, even though at my FLGS we've flat-out confronted the guy that stinks... someone shows up stinking when that guy got his act together.
Moral of the story: If you're ever wondering if you need to take a shower or change your clothes- you need to take a shower and clean your clothes.

New book smell, new rule book smell (similar, but not the same), and primer/sealant smell.
Whenever I smell the last one, especially if it wasn't from a model I finished, I always want to get a look to see what they are building/painted.

Mine is slightly opposite..
Use to live in house where I could smoke inside, during 3rd ed 40k when so many plastic Tyranids were now available.. So lots and lots of duder to paint.. and would paint 1 guy or do a layer for 5 (or 1 MC).. have a smoke.. and just kept up that process for the entire army...
And now cant paint.. because I just want to smoke then

I guess the burned edges of MDF terrain fresh from the box?

I thought this thread would be about the *aromas* emanating from the local FLGS ...
A GW store I used to occasionally play at called their store miasma "the funk of 40,000 years" - in summer, the aircon was less than adequate, especially when full of gamers, where personal hygiene may not have been a high priority.
As for me:
I can't stand the smell of dettol or pinesol, and I generally have a filter mask on when I'm using my preferred stripping agents, so I can't say whether they're pleasant or not.
The smell of a new book is sometimes pleasant (depending on what inks were used. Some are pretty rank, though.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

I use to manage a Internet Gaming Café..
And we had 2 guys that had the most distinct body odors..
One would walk into the store.. and I wouldn't have to look away from the screen on the other side of the store to know he had arrived..
The other use to work there.. and about 6 months after he left he popped in for a visit.. after he left a mate rocks up and proclaims.. 'man it hadn't smelt this bad in here since so'n'so left'

Testor's plastic cement. I have no idea how many brain cells I've lost to putting together plastic models in closed rooms with little or no ventilation, but that citrus-sweet smell always gets my attention.

Yes GW paints bring me back. The smell has changed over the years. So some I associate with painting my bretonnian army with my school friend others I associate with the new GW store in town. This is something I enjoy, but it always keeps me wondering how bad those smelly parts really are.

The smell of a newly-opened game is a thing of beauty (and volatile organic molecules). The most ... memorable-smelling paint was Titillating Pink, but that's not been available for over 20 years.

That segues nicely into a weird bit... When "Death From the Skies" came out, I was the only person at my local shop who ordered a copy. When I cracked it open...it smelled like pumpkin spices. Weirdest frigging thing ever, and someone was asking who had the pumpkin spice coffee when they came in. That book became the "Scratch and Sniff" for the day, making the manager buy a copy for himself and open it to see that yes, it seemed like most smelled like pumpkin spices.

Favorite smell is castor oil based nitro petrol after it's been burned - the smell of RC and CL engines.
My nose isn't sharp enough to catch fresh cards or fresh books unless I'm in the printing shop.

I associate the smell of 40k to the old Chaos Black primer that was circulating around in 5th edition when I started. And yes, it does have a different odor than the current Chaos Black spray.

H.B.M.C.- The end hath come! From now on armies will only consist of Astorath, Land Speeder Storms and Soul Grinders!
War Kitten- Vanden, you just taunted the Dank Lord Ezra. Prepare for seven years of fighting reality...
koooaei- Emperor: I envy your nipplehorns. <Magnus goes red. Permanently>
Neronoxx- If our Dreadnought doesn't have sick scuplted abs, we riot.
Frazzled- I don't generally call anyone by a term other than "sir" "maam" "youn g lady" "young man" or " HEY bag!"
Ruin- It's official, we've ran out of things to talk about on Dakka. Close the site. We're done.
mrhappyface- "They're more what you'd call guidlines than actual rules" - Captain Roboute Barbosa
Steve steveson- To be clear, I'd sell you all out for a bottle of scotch and a mid priced hooker.

The old black wash- the predecessor to Nuln Oil, I can't recall the name now- had a really distinct odor. Not exactly pleasant, but definitely kind of nostalgic now that the new washes are pretty neutral.
