Well yeah but Catholics are a powerful voter bloc, and one that has often straddled Democrate and Republican voting trends for a bunch of reasons (pro-social welfare, anti-abortion, pro-religious rights, anti-aggressive law enforcement). The Pope making a decision about the death penalty might mean nothing. The Catholic Church in the US operates in its own circles in a lot of ways, like the Catholic Church in most countries cause contrary to popular belief the Pope is not the be all end all of how Catholic's form their opinions, but it is meaningful in that it could shift some of the bloc more left on a major issue.

Yup... that's my read too (most of my fam are catholic or "recoverign catholics"). Pragmatically, it was defacto against the death penalty as Pope John Paul argued that it needs to be so rare that it's virtually non-existent. Francis is essentially making it "official" it would seem....

Frankly I applaud this as it makes them a weee bit more consistent based on their opposition to abortions.

Not sure how it would affect the US politically as there doesn't seem to be much appetite to fight for banning the death penalty from either party.

Death Penalty at this point is really more a state level issue than a federal one as far as debate goes. Even then challenges to the death penalty tend to be made in the judiciary rather than the legislature. I think it's really just an issue that doesn't have any major detractors nationally, resulting in it not being a significant issue in national politics but more background noise. It would probably jump right to the fore if say, fresh Democratic candidate Ricardo Orson made it an issue in his hypothetical campaign, forcing his Republican opponent to respond. That generally doesn't happen a lot these days, so it drifts to the back.

It basically means that from a church teaching perspective, voting for a pro-death penalty candidate is at the same level as voting for a pro-choice candidate.

What is so frustrating about voter ID advocates like to pretend that America doesn't have a detailed history of voter suppression. And strangely, the proposed voter ID laws somehow have a larger impact on the a historical suppressed group. Heck, for some reason when the Voting Right Acts was defanged, there was an increase in these laws...

Interesting data. I want to look deeper into it.

You have to admit that the attacks on trumps word choice during public speaking are getting absurd. His point...you need an ID to do a lot of things - why shouldn't you need one to vote? It's actually a really good argument. So good in fact - you really can't argue against without some BS argument like..."but some poeople can't afford ID's" Which I can easily counter with "lets make your first ID every couple of years free".

There is literally no reason you shouldn't need to prove your identity with a photo ID to vote. More worried about Russian hacking than non american literally voting in our elections.

His statements gets attacked because he's talking bs. The guy hasn't said anything sensible in like decade. If anything people are too forgiving and don't attack his statements enough. No person with half a sense would defend whatever bs he utters. His egomaniac moron who is taking us down just for his own ego

The voter ID problem has always been a myth created by pissed off people trying to delegitmatize the fact that Trump lost the popular vote. Who has said that they only won the popular vote because of illegal voters. Very few people can actually illegally vote. Now people can sometimes vote over state lines in multiple states but that is a rarer issue and is caught alot more.

Most of the time, yes, though some military ids and all sorts of government issued ID for federal employees also hits us at some point too.

The US Gov believes that just 35 people can handle all the records of every single American who has ever had anything to do with Social security. You can imagine how well that actually works.

It does seem to be something unusually American. I’m not sure if it is down to the good people of the US having less tolerance or it being more prevalent, or just how it seems from the outside, but if you look at the likes of the TSA and the way some police seem to act it seems from the outside that the US has a particularly bad issue with petty minded people on power trips in some serviceablez

https://www.bleedingcool.com/2018/08/02/wwe-superstar-kane-to-drag-knox-county-tennessee-straight-to-hell-as-newly-elected-mayor/

It’s a classic tale of redemption. Despite multiple skeletons in his closet, any one of which would have disqualified a person for public office before the Trump era, WWE superstar Kane has become the mayor of Knox County Tenessee. Kane, a libertarian who secured the Republican nomination in May, defeated Democratic opponent Linda Haney, though the outcome was never really in doubt, as the county leans heavily Republican and Haney has never once proven she can deliver a tombstone piledriver.

Kane has a sordid past that could have seriously damaged his candidacy. The whole Katie Vick affair was a big mess, and there was the time he electrocuted the testicles of his boss, Shane McMahon, the time he lit Good Old Jim Ross on fire, or the time he attempted to murder Braun Strowman by tossing him into the back of a garbage truck and turning on the compactor. Kane frequently spoke, while on the campaign trail no less, of his “sick and depraved acts” and tendency to “delight in terror, delight in pain.” That wasn’t enough to turn voters away from casting a ballot for him in Knox County Thursday.

In a promo declaring victory Thursday night, according to Knox News, Kane said that his campaign was initially met with laughter. But who’s laughing now?

Kane joins other pro wrestlers who found a second career in politics such as former Minnesota governor Jesse “The Body” Ventura and WWE Hall-of-Famer President Donald Trump. He was endorsed by a range of powerful figures ranging from Senator Rand Paul to Daniel Bryan. WWE congratulated Kane for his win on Twitter.

Meanwhile in China...

A flash of lightning bolts, ominous music in a minor key.

On a serious note, China has some big problems of its own, but China has something the USA once had but has now lost: a sense of who they are, where they're going, and what they want to be...

I mention this because there are interesting articles in The Guardian this week on China's geo-politics: taking the initiative in Africa, the Belt and Braces network across Eurasia, asserting its self in the South Pacific. the USA surrendering the initiative by ditching TPP etc etc etc

Hopefully, none of this will be news to people on this forum, but I mention it anyway, because the USA now has a serious rival on its hands, like Britain with the USA and Germany in the early 1900s.

It was bound to happen to the USA sooner or later, after all, you've had an easy run since 1989...

But with a deadly rival on the horizon seeking to usurp your hegemony, the last thing the USA needed was a clown POTUS, a corrupt and incompetent administration, a political system under siege from money and outside influence, and a populace who either don't care, or think the whole thing is a mass conspiracy theory...

This is a cross-roads for the USA.

Trump claims Queen Elizabeth kept him waiting
The president’s visit to Britain was broadcast live, including footage of the queen waiting for him for 12 minutes.

By GABRIELA GALINDO 8/3/18, 10:48 AM CET Updated 8/3/18, 12:55 PM CET
U.S. President Donald Trump told supporters that Queen Elizabeth II kept him waiting during his first official visit to the United Kingdom, blaming the media for reporting he’d been the one who was late for their meeting.

Speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania on Thursday, Trump claimed he had actually arrived 15 minutes early for his meeting with the “incredible” queen, slamming the “fake, fake, disgusting news” media reports that noted he had been the one who was late.

The president’s visit to Britain was broadcast live on television, including footage of the 92-year-old queen waiting for Trump for 12 minutes and looking at her watch

“I landed and I’m on the ground and I’m waiting with the king’s and the queen’s guards,” Trump told his supporters. “I’m waiting. I was about 15 minutes early and I’m waiting with my wife and that’s fine. Hey, it’s the queen, right? We can wait. But I’m a little early.”

Trump then denied reports that he had overstayed his welcome. He told the crowd he hadn’t known the meeting was supposed to last 15 minutes, and “it lasted like an hour” because “we got along.”

Trump then claimed he had “a better relationship” with European leaders “than any other [American] president has had.”

...uh huh.

No, we're the ones converting all the associated documentation to digital format, among other things. Currently, the vast majority of it is physical media. You know, dead tree paper and decaying microfilm? The current estimated project completion date on microfilm conversion is 2046. And we're calling that optimistic. The current document we're working on will be done about this time next year. That's one document type, and we've been working on it for three years now. On good days, I process about 250,000 records a day, personally. Might give you some scale there.

The amount of data that has been totally lost is... questionable. I suspect that some people's records have been lost entirely, due to acetate film decay (aka vinegar syndrome) which is why those films currently have priority, and why so many of my colleagues have been hospitalized.

For extra laughs, the digitization of Religious exemption, the paperwork for people who do not have to pay social security? Not even started yet. We're pulling staples out of paper to prep those for scanning in 2047 Because it will take that long to review every file and be sure that paperclips and staples are all removed.

So, yes, sub-optimal. Maybe you understand now why I think this will be a disaster. Because i see every day what was done with Social Security cards and how badly that operation was run since 1936 when it comes to ID.

Would you have preferred 8 more years of Obama? Because he sat back and empowered China to build up those islands in the South China Sea. Didn't want to antagonize. Thought being nice would solve the world's problems. Not that Trump has any of the answers but keep in mind the guy everyone thought was cool and smart didn't do gak either.

And I wouldn't worry too much over the long haul anyway. At the end of the day, everyone knows who the US is, and everyone knows who China is. No one is really going to ally themselves with China. Most countries in the area do not like the Chinese. When I lived in Indonesia, the Indonesians hated the Chinese who lived there. I think its the same in the Philippines. Now, they will certainly take their money, but lose sight of who they are? No.

In other news, 3.9% unemployment. Amazing.
