It's gone awfully quiet on the old Codex front since.

the last full codex for 40k was released back in February with Genestealer Cults (the Chaos codex in may was more like a re-print that a full rework). Now that 8th edition has been out for a while and we've no longer got any index armies when do you think we start seeing the cycle of codex start anew? June seems to have been dominated so far by contrast so does that mean we will be looking at July onwards for the next book? (probably Chaos Knights?)

Table below was taken from Wikipedia showing when the 8th codex were released for info

Mid year tends to be AoS. They have the Sylvaneth Battletome coming soon I think. The next 40k Codex would likely be in September, or possibly august. It might be later since all (I think) - non forgeworld - existing armies (except Sisters) have 8th Ed Codexes. And AoS needs some attention. I know a lot of you don't like AoS, but some people do and they need some attention too.

From now on (until 9th ed.), new codex will only come with new models.
Chaos knights and SoB are coming with their model lines.
SM might get their second one soon, with all the new stealthy primaris that came out. I wouldn't be surprised if we got some brand new primaris kits (on top of the already announced repulsor), along with a repacking of the stealthy primaris in individual boxes and a codex, for a big 2-3 week release.
Other than that, I think it's the same as guessing which faction will get new models next.

Chaos Knights is imminent.

As stated above - new models = new codex.

They're not going to retread codexes barring a total revamp for GK.

In addition to Chaos Knights we should expect a Primaris book likely along with the new tank and whatever other vehicles pop up. And then Sisters at the end of the year.

I think we can be confident in seeing the Chaos Knights codex soon plus a revamp to the Space Marines Codex to include the new Vanguard marines and tank. we have Sisters later in the year, but if that's all we saw in the last 6 months of the year it would be slim pickings indeed. We might see a rerelease of the BA/SW/DA codexes with new stuff added but that would be nothing new.

What do we think the deal will be with a new SM codex? Will it be like the new CSM codex where the original one is still valid?

I assume Renegade Knights (i.e. Chaos Knights) is next since this was a legit reveal/announcement followed by Adeptus Sororitus.

AoS has been getting some love as of late as the 40k Codex 8th edition update has come to an end. Good thing as well since AoS needs to finish up on some of the older tomes and non-tome factions.

Otherwise I think we'll see Renegade Knights and SoB this year for 40k. Maybe Space Marines 2.0.

I also think we'll be seeing maybe a few campaign supplements like the Vigilus one with accompanying model releases.

Possibly either World Eaters or Emperor's Children near the end of the year.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

Sisters of Battle by years end.

Ynari won't get a new codex until next year. My assumption would be GW will either keep them Index/White Dwarf or will give them actual models as a stepping stone to making them their own army instead of just a weird Custom Eldar Sub-Faction.

It would be enough this year to just get Chaos Knights and Sisters. I could see "maaaybe" one more. If not, probably one in February of 2020 would seem logical.

Marines will get a revamp sometime in the next year, possibly a Primaris-only codex even.

Chaos Knights in the next two months or so, and Sisters (along with Chapter Approved) will probably be out in Q4.

As things stand, I'm not sure we'll see a 'dex in Q3, but it does sound like there are quite a few tomes for Age of Silliness due over the course of the year.

There really aren't to many factions left for codexes barring a new faction release/reshuffle. We know Sisters and chaos knights are coming which leaves what?

While I agree this is needed, from the was Studio Head Guy was talking at the UKGE Seminar when asked about FW rules, I don't think we'll see much movement in front of the curtain about this.

There might be action behind the scenes, but I don't think we'll see updated 40k FW rules before next year.

I was in GW today to get a new M Layer brush and I asked the store manager if he had any idea when Codex: Chaos Knights would drop. He said under normal circumstances 6 to 8 weeks after being revealed, but apparently the delay to Sylvaneth is due to issues with the production of the hardback books in China. So this may affect codex releases too

I enjoy AoS and I agree, but GW has no excuse. They are a large enough company where they can have a design and rules team for both games, and schedule releases for both. Just because they are working on AoS doesn't mean they should ignore 40k.

GW is not ignoring 40k. They are still working on 40k even if they are not releasing a codex every month. Do people really want them to release a Space Marine Codex every 6 months just so there is a codex release at every turn for 40k?

People should remember that the crazy 8th edition release cadence was a result of them switching the game up completely and not something that can be done ad infinitum unless they release a new edition every two years.

I feel the scope of the game is that it can support 4-6 codex a year, and a release each month.

Make it happen GW.

Also, the next big 40k release is going to be Apocalypse with all that it promises. We have yet to see how much GW is investing into that.

Now that the Codex release has been completed we can expect ore campaign supplements like Vigilus.

I think GW would love to sell us bi-yearly editions of small updates and will happen sooner than expected.

Chaos Titans followed by Sisters of Battle are the confirmed Codex releases thus far.

GW has also been doing quite a few lore stories on Eldar and Eldar are one of the 40K factions with the most out of date model line at present in terms of still having a lot of finecast and very old plastics. So I would put some money on them getting a BIG revamp at some stage; which might well come with new models and an excuse for GW to revamp their codex at the same time.

Otherwise there's several niche army groups, but by and large 40K is, for this edition, "done" in terms of armies needing a codex update. Every army out now has an up to date codex and can operate fully in the current edition. Yes some are not as strong as others, some have issues and some have a lot of finecast; but by and large 40K is at a complete state.

Furthermore GW is focusing on AoS this year and likely will remain giving them the lions share until such time as they have completed the Battletomes for AoS, much as they have recently with 40K. So would guess a full year from now will be dominated with AoS battletome releases with the odd codex for 40K - possibly focusing on updating codex and niche battle groups rather tham main army codex.

As for 4-6 a year I think GW have to be cautious at stetching their resources too thin. New armies generate sales, but at the same time revamped ones do as well and the last thing the ywant is to front load themselves with so many armies that they end up unble to support them.

Between Corsairs and renegades i am frankly surprised that we haven't seen them propperly done.

I agree that some sort of Eldar seems likely. Recent rumour engine images suggest this too.

It's weird seeing people complain that the releases are coming out too slowly. Like sure they could release more stuff monthly for all their games, but it's nice that 40k stuff took a small break because it meant I could finally pick up some kill team stuff I missed. I started an AOS army because I was able to save some hobby money while 40k went on hiatus. And if I wasn't gripped by this plastic edition then I would have just been saving for my eventual Sisters of Battle army. Slowing down is good for those of us on a budget that like to stay somewhat current.

I'm eagerly anticipating a 2.0 version of Codex: Chaos Daemons. A couple of completely new units, a variety up updated datasheets, it really deserves it as much as the CSM one.
