I have finished another small contingent for my Battle Sisters Of The Hospitallic Order Of Saint Hildegard Von Bingen. My Sisters of Battle.
Having made a start with some commanders and veterans, the Plague War veterans(got a few more coming), I have here gone to the other end of the spectrum.
From veterans and survivors of many battles to Fresh face,
raw recruits yet to prove themselves.
There is two kinds of Noviates within the order, those of the hospital arm, and those of the combat arm of the order. Represented here is a typical squad of Sister Noviates of the combat arm of the order.
With the widespread devastation and loss of life in the Plague war, it was established that the best use of untrained and untested troops was in close support of power armoured Battle Sisters. The order became aderse to casuatlies for two reasons, firstly the Plague left a limited population, and secondly, those that died could be quickly infected with the nurglic plague. Power armoured sisters with jump packs were most effectively employed for reconnaissance, screening, and skirmishing particularly when combined with allied horsemen, and this helped to lessen casualties. So instead the Battle Noviates would fight as part of the main body of the force where the full battle sisters would firstly be able to lead and inspire the noviates, and also provide cover for their lighter counterparts. Noviates could additionally be rotated in to garrison lower risk areas, where they could continue their training in a more conducive environment.
In every ten initiates two are picked out, a squad leader, in charge of the unit in combat in the absence of a full sister, and a spiritual leader who fills the role of assistant squad leader. These Noviates receive additional training in regards to their leadership and are groomed to become squad leaders and assistant squad leaders, and then future officer candidates afterwards. It may seem excessive to be propagating sisters as inexperienced as noviates for leadership at a squad level, but this is a relic of the Plague War. It was a structure that allowed for the rapid integration of promising leaders. Additionally, this exstensive extra training means that if heavy casualties are sustained, the Order can bounce back, and that when leaders are killed in combat there is always a sister or two capable and positioned to take up command.
The equipment of the battle noviates reflects their expected role, and the avalibility of equipment. Standard lasguns are commonly available and can provide weight of infantry fire, revolvers are commonly found as they are reasonably common, rugged, reliable. Armour wise they are well equipted with blackened carapace helmets and breastplates, over maile shirts which provide additional protection especially in melee. Mass produced gasmasks are always available and are usually armed with a variety of hand weapons, as whilst close combat is not preferable for these members of the order, it is often seen as inevitable. Handgrenades and molotov cocktails are also extensively used, especially to counter charges. In combat their job is to keep the flanks of the squads of Battle Sisters clear. In the Order promising candidates are fast tracked into full sister squads and are put into power armour as soon as harnesses become available, and are intergrated into combat experienced squads, as this process has proven to greatly improve life expectancy, leading to more battle experienced sisters with a higher level of combat effectiveness.
Guns, bodies, mostly all anvil, gasmasks from Victoria Miniatures, helmets from Wargames Atlantic Halfling Militia. I do really like the kettle helmets.
