So, a bit of musing on my part about Oathmark. This game (in my very humble opinion) very much ‘feels’ like I remember WFB playing back in the late 80s / early 90s. That said, I played WFB3 last year and it did not ‘feel’ like I remembered it, lol back then. I think I glossed over a lot of the crunch the game actually has.

Oathmark ‘feels’ like warhammer because it has formed up units (and flanks matter), individual casualty removal, heroes who fill different roles, and enough races and monsters to be fun. It lacks the truly awesome spellcasting, really deadly heroes, and crazy weapons available in a WFB list. And yet, it doesn’t seem to matter. Once you add in it’s decent C2/psychology system, what you get are the same kind of stories that a good WFB game created. I’ve only played three games of it, but I’m quite smitten.

Played the third game just yesterday, which saw an elvish army trying to destroy my Oathmarks in an act of barbarous vandalism. The attacking force was mostly elves with some goblins and wolvers in support. Opposing them were my humans, supported by some dwarves, ogres, and a jabberwock (surma). The elf force was much quicker, having cavalry, and the wulvers, while my force was all infantry, but had more archers and war engines. Also, the elves were led by a prince on a chariot, while my army had no proper commander being led by a pair of wizards.

The elves attempted to drive against all three oathmarks. On my left their cavalry and archers made good headway against a spearblock and supporting archers.

On the right, the wulvers barreled into a trap between the ogres, dwarves and the jabberwock, outpacing the chariot supporting them. They had a regiment of goblins in support as well but these were routed from the field by catapult fire when seperated from the captain’s chariot. The poor wulvers took a flank charge from the jabberwock, which mauled them. Then a frontal charge by the dwarves, which, remarkably, they saw off. The elven prince on chariot swept in to flag charge the dwarves in return, mauling them badly in return. Alas, the prince was beaten into kindling by the ogres charge in response.

The center was more of slugfest with elven linebreakers and spearmen, closing in on more of my spearmen supported by archers. The jabberwock lurked near enough to that fight to commit to it, until it couldn’t resist eating wulvers.

In the end the elves were seen off convincingly.

Stuff we learned…
1. Big scary wizards need a commander. Rolling three dice to cast is great, but doesn’t help you pass the activation roll.
2. Bolt Throwers are fragile, can’t stand up to an artillery duel.
3. Goblins are great for the price, but must always stay in Command to be effective.
4. Getting flanked hurts bad, no matter what you are.

Nice writeup. I still want to get my hands on their Dwarves at some point.

Well, I'll be looking into a new system, it seems!

"At the point in time when bullets can pass through the interdimensional walls. When firepower takes up the entirety and eternity of space and time, all beings stuck in a neverending life and death cycle as bullets recover and destroy their bodies in quick succession. No one is able to think about anything but the sheer force of the bullets rapidly flying literally everywhere in the materium turning the warp itself into nothing but a sea of semi-automatic weaponry.. Then there will be enough dakka. Or, at least almost." -The Glorious God Emperor of Mankind

I bought Oathmark when it came out, but thanks to the plague I only got my first game in this past September. It’s well worth peoples time to try out. The army I painted for it (below) was more or less my lockdown project and features a ton of different model companies figs. Off the top of my head… Citadel, Red Box, Footsore, Crusader, Ral Partha, Hasslefree, Ragnarok, First Corps, Casting Room, even Wiz Kids.

Does Oathmark have a Chaos Warrior equivalent? Because I might be down for this...

Honestly, not really. You could run human or Orc Linebreakers with one of the elite unit rules for a close approximation.

Thanks, Rivetbull. If they allow for elite, heavily armored humans, then I'll probably be fine,

The Human list has a few heavily armoured Humans units.

Human Warriors (different to Human Soldiers), Line Breakers, Heavy Cavalry, Ogres, and Ogre Linebreakers.

Plus with durable monsters like Bugganes, and Giants you are sure to find a hime for your more exotic Chaos stuff.

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

Another thing I considered was just doing up a warriors of chaos style list rules-wise. This isn't a tournament style game so there is a lot more leeway in crafting houserules to fit your collection without a ton of kickback from people.

I did the same thing (crafted a chaos warrior list) for warlords of erehwon.

Oathmark is a great game. Easy ruleset but tactically deep. Nice miniatures, and cheap too!

I played Oathmark once recently and I really enjoyed it. I'm using an Orc army, I might add some Elves in the future. But for now I'm strictly focusing on painting what I have.
