Quite some time ago (2 years?) I started a campaign with my Monty Python & Holy Grail themed Empire Army. The idea was to have it face every army I could muster (often using my historical Ancients as proxies). So far I have done: Dogs of War, Albion, Norsca, Chaos, Goblins, Kislev, Orcs, Wood Elves, Dwarves, Araby, Estalia, Lizardmen and Amazons. Here is the latest:
Battle # 14
Warhammer Fantasy, 8th ed. 3000 points
Empire V High Elves
Figures (25mm):
Pythons: Mostly from Medieval Mayhem range, with a few odds and ends thrown in
High Elves: Mostly a collection of models my brother gave me. Many are approaching 40 years old.
In the lists below, I decided to include the characters in the units they are attached to, rather than list them separately. Both lists are slightly illegal, but only by 5 points or so. Armies are based on available figures and fun, not power or balance.
Monty Python’s Empire
Arthur’s Knights of Camelot
• Arthur, king of Britons (General w/ Runefang and full plate, etc.)
• Lancelot (Grand Master, Sword of Strife, strength potion)
• Bedevere (Army standard, tormentor sword, talisman of preservation)
• Dead Collectors (Level 1 wizard, van Horstman's Speculum)
• Seven knights of the inner circle w/ great weapons
12 Singing Knights of the Round Table – (Knightly orders w/ great weapons, full command)
40 Black Knights (great swords, full command)
Swamp King’s Legion
• 20 halberdiers w/ full command
• 2 x 12 units of bows
Knights who say Ni! (Golfag’s mercenary Ogres)
Brother Maynard & Holy Hand Grenade (Hellblaster volley gun)
• The wise man from scene 24 (engineer)
Trojan Rabbit (Steam Tank)
Sister’s of Purity (Celestial Hurricanum)
Tim the Enchanter (level 2 fire wizard)
High Elves
Red Dragons
• Tyrion
• Army Standard (Banner of World Dragon)
• 8 Dragon Princes w/ full command
Fred’s Dragon Princes (Because I got them from my brother Fred)
• 6 Dragon Princes w/ full command
5 Silver Helms
5 Reivers
48 spearmen, full command
40 spearmen, full command
12 swordmasters
12 white lions
Dragon mage
Turn 1: Empire goes first
Nothing too exciting. Empire advances, trying to keep their cavalry out of probably charge range (really wish this game had a counter charge rule – at least for cav).
Empire plan worked well – Both Red Dragons & Silver Helms just missed their charge.
Turn 2:
Arthur and company charge Red Dragons, while Singing knights charge Silver Helms.
Tim throws a maximum strength fireball at Dragon Mage – wounding dragon twice
Brother Maynard scores big with the Holy Hand Grenade – completely eliminating all six of Fred’s Dragon Princes.
Combat: Singing knights defeat and overrun the Silver Helms.
Arthur and Tyrion fight to a bloody draw. The biggest disappointment was Arthur failing to score a hit with his Runefang. His 0/3 enabled the High Elves to hold on. High point was the dead collectors fighting the Dragon Prince captain to a draw.
High Elf phase –
The unit of 48 spears charges home on the 40 Black Knight Swordsmen. The White Lions charge through a forest to hit the Ogres and the Rievers hit the sisters (hurricanum) in the flank. The Dragon mage maneuvers to get the Rabbit (Steam tank) into charge range.
The Black Knight Swordsmen make easy work of the HE spears (16 kills to 8), they route but escape – barely. The reivers and sisters fail to do any damage to each other.
White lions kill 2 Ogres, whereas Golfag and company kill 7 elves. The fight continues.
Arthur & Tyrion (plus their units) continue to fight a draw with kills on both sides mounting.
Turn 3:
The rabbit turns to face the dragon mage. No other charges. Sining knights turn about and prepare to charge Tyrion’s unit in the rear.
Tim the Enchanter uses Fulminating Cage and kills one reiver.
Bow fire (3 kills) and brother Maynard (10 kills) damage the 40 man spear unit – but it holds steady.
Trojan Rabbit picks a fine time to misfire and causes 3 wounds to itself.
Black knights finish the destruction of the HE spears (I forgot they were routing – but they were overrun anyway).
Sisters route and overrun the reivers (I kept forgetting to give nearby units their +1 hit).
Ogres finish off the White Lions.
Remarkably, the dead collectors keep their challenge with the
DP captain going, neither side being able to record a kill.
Tyrion manages to knock Arthur out of the fight (never say die). Lancelot tries to avenge him, but fails to wound. Lancelot does keep his surviving men on the fight however.
High Elf phase
What’s left of the 40 man HE spears charges home on the bows of the Swamp King’s legion (being 10 wide, they strike home on both units). Easily defeating the bows. Their pursuit carries them into the supporting halberdiers.
The swordsmen charge home on Golfag and his remaining Ogres; the Ogres are defeated but they escape.
The Dragon Mage charges the Trojan Rabbit steam tank – but only causes 1 wound.
Tyrion dispatches Lancelot while the dead collectors finally kill the
DP champion– but the fight goes on.
Turn 4:
The singing knights charge Tyrion and his ABS (only survivors at this point) in the rear.
Brother Maynard throws a hand grenade into the HE Swordsmen, vaporizing them.
The Trojan Rabbit attempts a grinding attack on the Dragon Mage – picking a bad time to have its second mishap. The rabbit is destroyed.
What’s left of the 40HE spears, route and overrun the Swamp King’s halberdiers.
Tyrion kills Lancelot and the ABS kills the dead collectors. The Singing knights fail to wound Tyrion.
With all their leaders out of the fight, plus nothing left that is likely to harm Tyrion, Monty Python’s Empire concedes defeat.
Two more to go.
And now for some photos. I didn't bother to take photos of my Pythons, as there are already numerous ones on these pages.
First some spearmen. My brother did these in the 1980s I think - love the colors
And the back view:
Two units of ELves flanking a dragon mage
Dragon Princes
Fred's Dragon Princes. Note the Holy Hand Grenade marker
Personal combat between the Dead Collectors and the Dragon Prince champion
Dragon Mage squares off with the Trojan Rabbit
This is a 'converged' unit of high elves into a 48 man (elf?) Horde.
My brother did the flags. Much more craetive than me.
